Our annual trip to Hilton Head has become a family tradition (though we haven't stayed using our DVC points - we prefer to be oceanfront during these trips). I've seen a lot of posts here about things to do at HHI, places to eat, etc. I have yet to see a post on Rita's Italian Ice. Our trips wouldn't be complete without at least one visit to Rita's in Coligny Plaza. If you haven't had real Italian water ice, you've got to try it. Don't think flavored ice, like a snow cone. Don't think yicky sweet confection like a Mr. Misty. Rita's are sweet, fruity, cool. Try the Gelati - a layered combination of italian ice and frozen custard. My favorite flavor is Mango (they don't always have it - flavors change daily).

Anyway, for those going to HH, don't miss this treat. Its at the south end of Coligny Plaza - a little kiosk. You won't miss it - and I bet that will be the start of another family tradition.

i believe rita's started in delaware county, pa...my home...and they have the best waterice..the tangerine is awsome!

WE LOVE RITAS ITALIAN ICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My DH first had one in HH and always mentioned how good it was.

We were on vacation in VB and were talking about it and I looked over and said "what is that, a pizza place?" dh said "oh my gosh, it's a Rita's". We couldn't turn the car around fast enough.

We never go to VB without getting one

:D

Tangerine, Lime, Cherry, YUM!

My parents have a Rita's around the corner from them on LI. When we were in HH in April, my DS spotted the one there, and we quickly made the visit. Try the mango, it's fabulous! Also, right down the street is Just Pasta, a wonderful restaurant that Chef Gordon had recommended to us. It was the perfect dinner & dessert combo.

You may have just given me the final incentive to purchase DVC! I'm a transplanted Philly yankee living in Raleigh , NC for the last 8 years, and not a summer goes by that I don't yearn for a Rita's blueberry/lemon combo with a soft pretzel. I only get to enjoy them on our trips to Philly once or twice a year. I had no idea HH had a Rita's - I haven't seen any south of PA. Thanks for making my DVC decision easier!

Ritas has locations in Florida, South Carolina, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia.

I can't believe they don't have one in Michigan :(

Writing from Philly, the HOME of Rita's Water Ice. (Does anyone else call it water ice, by the way???) Just had my favorite yesterday: cherry-chocolate gelati. Nothing goes better with cherry water ice than chocolate soft serve!

Hi, thanks for the suggestion!!!! Are they only open in the summer??

I have a rita's right up the street from me (in pa). here, all this time, i thought they were just local people; had no idea it was a franchise all over. Thanks for the tip on HH!

RITA'S IS THE BEST!

I can remember waiting in line at the original Rita's in Bensalem, PA! The line would stretch out onto route 13! Aaahhhh, memories!

We did not see the Rita's in HH when we were there in April. Had we seen it, we would have jumped at the chance of downing a gelati :p

Someone mention that there was a Rita's in Virginia. Any body know where in Virginia there is a Rita's?

luvdisney,

Their website says Newport News, Virginia Beach and Winchester.

ritasitalianice.com

click on eat a ritas and you should be able to find their locations from that point.

StevieD,

You're so right...I can't believe no one talks about Rita's. We actually discovered it on our last trip in May. After dinner at The Old Oyster Factory (one of our favorities), there was a lady on the porch and she told us about Rita's. It was wonderful! We will make Rita's put of our trip from now on!:p

Rita's fan here...I love the stuff....

Off topic, sorry.....

zurgswife, did you hit the wall at the RP driving experience??

Ah, I'll have to look and see if there are any other SC locations...having just moved from PA I'm missing the gelati. (Choc ice with vanilla custard...or if they don't have that...the opposite!)

But hey, HH is only a couple hours' drive away....
