Rita - this is depressing

Well it's a good thing they didn't put anyone on the cruise ships out in Galveston like they were thinking about doing. I think no one volunteered? I thought that was the dumbest thing to do, like these people would want to be near water again.
Galveston has a seawall 17 ft tall and 10 miles wide. The land behind it was raised 20 ft. I just saw a special on tv a couple of days ago about the hurricane that hit Galveston in 1900 killing 6000 to 8000! Unbelievable!

On the Discovery Channel? If so , I saw that too. Sad stuff the kids on the line and all :(

All of those people being killed prompted Galveston to build the Seawall. But it only helps to a certain extent. The waves are the biggest problem.

The Astrodome was not damaged when Alicia hit. The dome would hold up much better than the Superdome as should the roads around it. I just hope that the thing doesn't increase in strength too much.

And what about the Florida Keys? Peter Pirate, are you out there?

Yes I think it was the discovery channel. Nuns had put ropes around the waists of several kids and then tied them to their waist to hopefully save them. It was awful.

I thought this was interesting.

Tidbit - Although 30% of Galveston's population evacuated the island when Hurricane Allen (1980) threatened the Texas coast, only 10% of the population living behind the seawall decided to leave when Alicia (1983) came ashore.

Please forgive if this is a dupe thread - saw none immediately. However, the 11am track for Rita is to become fairly strong Hurricane. Unbeliveably, three of the six computer tracks show it plowing into LA or MS. This is unbelievable, and depressing

Tracks

You think this is depressing. I am shuttered up again after Katrina just a few weeks ago. Neighbors still have debris out in front of their homes that can become missles. Some neighbors still have tarps on their roofs because they haven't had time to repair the roofs. All the neighbors who didn't board up for Katrina are for Rita and they are predicting flooding again because of the storm surge won't allow for a quick run off. And the darn thing is causing my arthritis and fibromyalgia to flare

I can see where Chad is coming from...it's one thing to say "I hope it doesn't hit NOLA"....it's quite another to say "I hope it misses X and hits Y".

When hurricanes head my way...I would be offended if people said well "I hope it misses my home and hits yours instead".

And chad didn't bring up that puppy comment first. I empathisize completely with DopeyRN...my home got hit twice last year (thankfully no damage)--some homes got hit 3 times last year. But I would be offended if someone said--let it miss Miami, they had Andrew...let it go to Central Florida instead. Ummm...hello---thanks for wishing it my way in other words!

However, I live in a zone--where hurricanes can and do often pretty much do anything. The gulf is not so lucky. The only thing that really saves the gulf coast is a total disappearance of the hurricane once it enters. That is not likely. We can only hope for the best.

2 wrongs don't make a right though. I didn't care for either dog comment--and actually thought chad was clever with his point (though crass)...b/c you are essentially telling him that his dog deserves to get kicked since your dog is already down. We shouldn't be saying it should hit any particular location other than our home...just a general "I hope it doesn't come here" suffices.

There never is a fair landfall location for a hurricane to go.

A hurricane puts everyone in an awkward situation IMO. We live in eastern NC so are also on alert during the season. When someone says that they hope that it doesn't hit their home town they are NOT wishing that another area receives the damage & destruction. When Floyd missed FL I am sure that MANY FL residents were VERY happy. While they were relieved not to have it hit them, I do NOT believe that any of them were cheering that it was now heading up the east coast to NC. Last year we in eastern NC were lucky as far as being in the path of only two hurricanes. At the same time we didn't cheer each time one hit FL instead of heading up the coast towards us.

I also hope it disappears.

I wouldn't wish what we have been through in last few weeks on anyone. But I think everyone is missing the fact that Katrina didn't just hit NO. There is a vast area in La. and Miss. that has been devastated. We really don't need another storm here right now. We have been working non stop around our place for three weeks and we're not halfway through what we need to get cleaned up.

I just want it to go away!!!!!

Yep, like Buck said, they go Greek. But, they don't get to z ever, next is Stan, then the T, then V, then W, then the Greek letters.

Hey, if I hear anything about a storm named "I am the Alpha and the Omega"....

agnes!

The path I keep seeing repeatedly has it passing just west of where I live, which means we're on the bad side of the storm.

We have a shelter here that still has about 1,000 people in it, and they're already making plans to evacuate these evacuees to another shelter, in case the storm keeps its projected path.

As for wishing it go somewhere, I'm kind of opposite from everybody. I would rather it hit Lafayette and spare New Orleans and Houston. I'm willing to take one for the team.

Another hurricane hits New Orleans right now, and you can cancel Mardi Gras and any other plans you have in the Big Easy for at least a year.

We're all hoping/praying that it weakens, but we have to be ready for whatever comes our way.

Right now they are predicting Houston/Galveston area. If NO is on the right side of the rain they could still be in trouble from more flooding.

I know and understand that.

I was not calling out a specific...but there are several posts in her...where some said they wish it hit NOLA instead...and conversely, those that wish it hit Texas instead.

ETA: I have egg on my face---just reread the thread and see that the wish for "there" as opposed to Texas occurred first.

It is rather sadistic to say you rather it hit XYZ location. B/c you are essentially wishing destruction upon someone else. Picking a location is what is rude. Saying you hope it hits your home, is not.

There is a difference IMHO. I have no problem with breathing a sigh of relief...I have a problem that several times in this thread...one poster is being called out for his post...when essentially people were wishing it to hit his state.

Oh--and in Brevard county--we are getting some mighty gusts today and some weird sprinklings of rain...and we are so far out of the path....Rita is going to be a big PITA for anyone who will feel her bands. :(.

Lisa--I hope you and your family are safe--and that goes for everyone else in the path of the storm too.

Thanks..on my end it is not a big deal--it ends up being a beautiful very breezy day. Breezes into the 20s.

Just cautioning for those near the path but not directly in the cone..that her swath is wide.

This is not good--this is from memory....I know the surge info is accurate, but don't remember the rainfall....

But for New Orleans, a direct hit won't be necessary for trouble. A 3 foot storm surge and something like 6 inches of rain or so...:(.

One "good" thing about Katrina... I heard a meterologists on NPR this morning say that one of the effects of the monster size of Katrina was that its winds and churning action has noticebly cooled the surface waters in the Gulf. He said there's a lot less chance that this sucker's going to form into another monster.

That's interesting Geoff.

I noticed here that Ophelia had sucked out all our humidity for a bit...and last year after our 2nd hurricane (Sept 25th) it was noticeably cooler. Though no idea about the water temps.

They've been saying that "next advisory" Rita would be a hurricane....since yesterday morning. Haven't checked the 8am yet to see if she was upgraded....but that could be a good sign....hopefully.

Can't visualize where Dallas is on the map of Texas ... but according to the 8am, Tropical storm will be near there by Sunday.

Weird.

Whoa! That's one helluva storm. Dallas is in north Texas about 300 miles north of Houston.

Anyway, the winds have really picked up around here. For some reason, this storm makes me uneasy.

And Peter Pirate, where are you?
