Only just found out that FOTL isn't available on this ride - is it essential to ride this one on park opening - we will be going at the end of August and staying onsite. Also just how intense is this coaster - if it is similar to California Screamin at DLR, I will be happy

My friend and I were at the parks a little over a month ago, and we got to universal studios around 1130am. We went on the Mummy first, just because it was early and I wanted to ride something less intense to start out with in the morning. Mummy took about 20 minutes to get on, and then we headed to Rip Ride Rockit. We waited in that line for about 50 minutes. I would assume the line will be a pretty decent wait, as it IS a somewhat newer ride. I'd probaby hit that ride up pretty early to avoid long waits.

One thing that I DID NOT like about the ride, is how it goes straight up when it begins to take you to the first drop. I didn't pull my harnest tight enough and i could feel myself slipping out of the seat as my iphone also was slipping out of my pocket. It was not a very comfortable start to the ride. However, after we got to the top of the drop, the ride was amazing. Kinda stinks that it only goes upside down one time though. Had they thrown in 2 or 3 more parts where you are upside down, it could be one of my favorites.

It never goes upside down. It is the world largest non inverted loop.:thumbsup2

The line seems to be significanly shorter than it has been in the past these days. There are many times where it will only be 20-30 minutes during the peak time of the day. This is way better than the 60-90 minutes that it used to be every single day. It still can get that high, but it seems to be more rare.

I personally don't understand how Dragon Challenge never has any line, but this still does. It's not even close to as good a coaster as that.

Pretty sure it is a capacity issue.

I've waited in the line when it stretched out to the castle entrance. Let me tell you...you don't want to see a long line for this attraction.

I certainly don't. Love being able to go on as many times as I physically can before falling over. Unlike the Hulk, it is a very smooth and fun ride.

I don't think it's a capacity issue though. A lot of the time they only run one train on both sides and there's still no line. That's what's confusing to me. You'd think visually more people would be expected to be scared to ride HRRR, add that to the fact that IOA is busier than Universal, and I just don't get why Dragon Challenge is so much more unpopular in comparison at this point.

From what I understand, the trains are added based on the number of people in the park but WWoHP kinda throws a kink into that logic. The location isn't great being at the back of the park but when people do go back there, it's for FJ mainly. I'm just guessing.

IMO this is a lot more intense than California Screamin. The launch for me up was not fun for me and my DH!

Friday evening we rode at closing. 9:30 and were in line 35-40 minutes. It was a fun fast coaster.

It actually wasn't a launch...you weren't shot up that hill. I can see how the first vertical lift is the scariest part of the whole ride fore some people.

I've been watching the wait times on my phone app...It appears this is a good time to go down.:)

In January, the wait time was posted at 10 minutes around 10:30 a.m during the week but appeared to be longer than that (probably around 20 minutes). The single rider line was closed but they let me in that line anyway and I waited about a minute. The vertical lift didn't really take me by surprised with how it felt since a park near me has a coaster that also has a vertical lift so I am used to it.

Dragon's Challenge probably isn't as popular because it goes upside down and there are people who will ride large coasters but won't ride any that go upside down. I liked RRR but preferred Dragon's Challenge a lot more. I put Hungarian Horntail at #4 and Chinese Fireball at #5 on my steel coaster rankings.

I would say FJ def. has a lot to do with it. When we were in that part of the park, my boys generally chose FJ for their repeat riding (via single rider) even though they liked DC. On the other hand, when in US, the tried to ride HRR many times. Coaster wise, I would say they rode Hulk the most, followed by HRR and then DC. Not because they didn't like it, even I, the big ride chicken liked it. But because there was so much in WWOHP that was clamoring for their attention.

In answer to the OP's question, in late Aug. the line usually ranged from 10 min. to 45 min. for this ride. It really seemed to vary, so the boys took advantage whenever they could. :goodvibes

We were there last Saturday and at 10 am the wait time was 10 minutes but then by 2 pm it was 70 minutes. So glad that we rode it twice in the morning :thumbsup2

How are the restraints on this for us generously-sized folk?

They do have seats for generously sized folks but they aren't very forgiving (at least according to DH.) My DH is 6'3" and about 230lbs. He rode it once and said it was crushing his chest the entire time. he siad it was a fun ride but he was so uncomfortable that he refused to ride it again. He did not have any problems with any of the other rides.

There are seats to test before you enter the ride. I would suggest testing them out before you get in line.

Riding RRR is on my little list of things to do this summer. I didn't do it last year, don't really know why. I only stayed for 4 nights, and this was during opening week of WWoHP so you can imagine that I didn't spend too much times in the studios. However, when I was in there, I chose not to ride RRR, and I kinda regret it now.

I don't like the vertical lift hill. It's scares the bejeezus out of me, and I am a big coaster junkie. Sure, they scare me but in a good way. But RRR kinda scares me in a bad way, and I think if it was located in a less reputable park, I would probably cross it off my list for looking rickety and "too unsafe". However, I know that's not really an excuse at USF.

I just know that it will get stuck as I am going up the lifthill. I suffer vertigo if I feel insecure at a great height (not in planes) and the thought of an evacuation on a vertical lift hill...

Oh gosh! This vertical lift talk has me nervous. Is it like the vertical coaster at Cedar Point? What is it like?

I personally love roller coasters, except steep vertical DROPS (where you get that stomach feeling). Will I like this?

Maybe I will let the kids go on and tell me what its like. Although I don't really trust them because they would think its funny to trick me to ride the ride.

I can do Rock n Roller Coaster, Space Mountain, etc. I did not go on the vertical coaster at Cedar Point but did go on the Mustang (?? can't remember name). I didn't go on Millenium Force. I won't go on Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America but will go on the Demon.
