RIP Jimmy Buffett

Least-known isn't the same as unknown. Those of us who are fans have heard pretty much all of them at some time or another, and yes, many of them happen to be among my favorites from the albums, and probably yours, too.

In the films, Delaney has at hand a spreadsheet of set lists going back decades, and she mentions how many times each song has been performed live as they discuss them. In most cases the number was fewer than 10. I would say that tallies with the description, as so many fans came to the albums only after being taken to a live show. (I was the opposite; as a tween I first heard him on my sister's Bayou Room tapes; but I didn't go to my first concert until 1981.)
Sounds cool. Do you have a link?

Like I said , not going to quibble. Pretty much still stunned and emotional.

I myself was not a huge fan. There were some songs I liked and some I didn't care for. My wife and her family were huge fans. My wife and FIL danced to Little Miss Magic at our wedding, the same song he sang to my wife the first time he held her after she was born. My wife flew from Wisconsin to Texas to go to a concert with her sister, total time away, 28 hours. There were a few margaritas hoisted at the Labor Day barbecue last night. My MIL had to be pretty much rolled back to her chair.

I also danced with my dad to Little Miss Magic at my wedding.

Delaney's recent tribute post to her father, his caregivers, and his fans, from her Instagram (I redacted one word that isn't DIS-safe):

I knew my dad my whole life, but In his final days, I saw who he was: a man whose spirit could not be broken.

Despite the pain, he smiled everyday. He was kind when he had every excuse not to be. He told us not to be sad or scared. but to keep the party going. And as much as I'd like to use that as an excuse to drink myself into an oblivion worthy of his literary heroes. I know it's not what he meant. Yes, he loved his weed and his wine, but the truth is, most of the time, he was just high on life. And that is what he wanted for everyone: to enjoy the fantastic trip that life can be.

My dad was the joy he sang about. He was the hardest working person I've ever seen. He was a great man and an even better dad to my brother, sister and me. He was generous with friends and strangers alike. He had a deep admiration for the people he worked with, and he never took himself too seriously, which is probably what I loved most about him. When I showed him the South Park episodes that parody him, he loved chuckling along. I remember teasing him about their Margaritaville blender jokes. and without missing a beat, he zinged me with: ''You live off those f*****g blenders!" He got me there.

Over the past few days, people have thanked me for sharing my dad with them, but I know he would have wanted me to thank his fans for sharing their lives with him. We are his family, but the stage was his home, and you, his band, and everyone on the road gave him the strength to keep going back. I'll pass along something my mom said to me: "Whenever you feel sad or lost, look for the messages in his music. There are plenty."

My dad repeatedly told us how much he appreciated the doctors, nurses, and every person who was there for him during his battle with cancer. So to those who took care of my dad at home and in the hospital, I want to thank you for giving us more time together. I am eternally grateful.

To the family and friends supporting us during this time, thank you for reminding me of the importance of human connection. I knew laughter was the best medicine, but it's never rung truer than it does now. "If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane."

And a big thank you to everyone for your tributes. stories, and notes. My dad and I shared a love for words, so reading yours has lit up my darkest hour.

And finally, to my dad, thank you. You turned nothing into something and gave me everything. I will never be able to repay you or my mom for my beautiful life. I will love you forever, and I will always keep the party going (responsibly, of course).

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Thursday issued an order that flags in Key West and Tallahassee be flown at half-staff in honor of the late singer-songwriter, who died in New York Sept. 1 from a rare form of skin cancer at the age of 76.

“Born in Mississippi and raised in Alabama, Buffett moved to Key West in his early years to build a legacy,” DeSantis wrote in his order. “An inductee of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, Buffett captured the Florida lifestyle and entertained generations of Floridians with his relaxed ‘Floridays’ style that embodied the spirit of the Gulf Coast and Conch Republic.”

The order applies to flags at three locations: the Monroe County Courthouse in Key West; City Hall in Key West; and the State Capitol in Tallahassee. The order called for the flags to be lowered from 5 p.m. (eastern time) Thursday to 5 p.m. Friday “because it’s always five o’clock somewhere,” the governor’s proclamation reads.

I just came across this on the BuffettNews FB group. Posted yesterday. Never thought I'd see a Coral Reefer/Disney crossover! Not going to get into the debate about the show changing, just sharing the news. Made me smile.

"It looks like the Country Bears have called in experts too, as Jimmy Buffet’s bandmate Mac McAnally featured in the preview shown today at the D23 Expo."

Editing to add the D23 video, with Mac singing "Bear Necessities"

This is fantastic news!

I was going to head there that day but being the 4th of July weekend, something else came up and never made the trip. Buffett wound up showing and performing for about 45-minutes. I believe that may have been his last show of any kind …literally in front of a few hundred people. Cursing myself now….
I keep thinking about this. Some who were there have shared their experience and videos. One said it was bittersweet, as they recognized the signs of advanced cancer. I believe the set with Mac consisted of his "great 8" aka the songs he always played at the big concerts.
