RIP Jimmy Buffett

I don't know any of his songs other than 'Margaritaville,' I'm ashamed to say. On really snowy and miserable days, one of my local radio stations would play it for everyone who was snowed in and longing for better weather. RIP.

“Some of its magic, some of its tragic, but I've had a good life all the
way.”

RIP Jimmy. Wow what a man. He brought so much joy to so many people. Such a talent. Singer, songwriter, author (his books are awesome btw), entrepreneur. We just ate at Margaritaville the other night and as I was fully immersed in the atmosphere, I couldn't help but think of how cool the whole pirate/beach bum lifestyle is.

And those harbor lights, Lord, they're coming into view
We'll bid our farewells much too soon
So drink it up, this one's for you
Honey, it's been a lovely cruise
Yeah baby, it's been a lovely cruise

The beauty is he only had 1 hit record but has been consistently putting out new music from the late 70s on. I think my last purchase was recorded in 2019.

Many many great songs and memories. My kids grew up hearing me play his music. Banana Wind, Beach House on the Moon, One Particular Harbor… too many to mention. To this day our family refers to Hawaiian shirts as Jimmy Buffet shirt. My world was better because of Jimmy Buffett.

I'm a professor and when I think about the music my students listen to, lots of stuff that has so many strains of negativity, violence, and bad decision making (not to sound like a fuddy duddy) and then you have someone like Buffett who just liked a good time, a joint, and a stiff drink. There was a reason why his audience at concerts skewed older, he was a throwback to an earlier, gentler era; no moshing, no screaming, just fun times.

RIP Jimmy …build a great Margaritavile in the sky and I’ll be there. Im certain it’ll be a GREAT Labor Day Weekend Show! I’m a bit crushed by the news -Mac McAnally(Coral Reefer Band) had a show in Portsmouth, RI on July 3rd at a small restaurant/bar …McAnally is friends with the owner. I was going to head there that day but being the 4th of July weekend, something else came up and never made the trip. Buffett wound up showing and performing for about 45-minutes. I believe that may have been his last show of any kind …literally in front of a few hundred people. Cursing myself now….

And yet if you listen to his music he was so much more than that. Lots of family values interspersed throughout. And while he is associated with the party life he enjoyed life on a far less superficial level

I think that's what it is that is so appealing about him. Such simplicity to be happy. A pair of flip flops, a drink, a beach. All you need. Oh, and a cheeseburger.
