RIP Jimmy Buffett

I don't know any of his songs other than 'Margaritaville,' I'm ashamed to say. On really snowy and miserable days, one of my local radio stations would play it for everyone who was snowed in and longing for better weather. RIP.
Same here. Idk how that slipped by us? šŸ˜ I know he was hospitalized in Boston recently. May he RIP.

Here are some tributes in Key West:

ā–Ŗ Procession: At 5 p.m. Sunday, a procession will celebrate Buffett’s life, starting at Duval and Front streets, and then continuing down Duval Street.
ā–Ŗ Symbolic stop: There will be a stop at Margaritaville, his restaurant and boutique, with the event ending at the corner of Truman Avenue.
ā–Ŗ Benefit: Proceeds from the event will go to the Bahama Village Music Program.
ā–Ŗ Flag salute: Key West city offices will also be flying their flags at half-staff.

I’ll miss the procession, but I will be in Key West next week for work. I’ll definitely make a stop at his original Margaritaville location.

I had the good fortune of attending today's football game at Southern Miss today where Jimmy attended and graduated class of 1969.

They always play Jimmy's songs during the game, but today's had more poignancy as they paid tribute.

He was still a supporter of the school until the end having made substantial donations including an ocean exploration vessel for their marine biology program and establishing a scholarship for students in the arts programs.

The vibe of the Mississippi Coast is the same beach bum vibe everyone loves about Buffet. He came by it honestly as he was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi and his seafaring was influenced by his grandfather.

I never knew Jimmy existed until our neighbors in 93' introduced us to "Cheese Burgers in Paradise" and were hooked ever since. Loved his music and vibe ever since.
No other musician out has been able to ever capture that uniqueness that is JB

Did you ever like the song Door #3? That's one of my favorite Jimmy Buffett songs and tells about a guy who tries to win the big deal on Let's Make A Deal and the song is so funny to listen to and the lyrics are such a laugh

I am crushed. Grew up listening to Jimmy thanks to my aunt.

We happened to be in Orlando yesterday so we stopped by Lone Palm Airport at CityWalk. For those who haven’t been, the plane there is indeed the actual plane that inspired ā€œJamaica Mistaica.ā€

If you don’t listen to much Buffett, I would like to recommend the album Banana Wind. ā€œOnly Time Will Tellā€ is my favorite song.

Fins up forever.

Agreed. And add Barometer Soup and Beach House on the Moon for a fantastic trilogy

RIP, Jimmy Buffett. He will be sorely missed, both as an entertainer and a generous patron of causes dear to those who treasure our oceans. He was also a very devoted family man, and I hope that his widow and his children may be comforted in some small measure through their greater loss by how much he was also admired and respected by the wider world.

I highly recommend watching the series of short films on YouTube entitled Songs You Don't Know by Heart. These acoustic sessions were recorded at home during and after the pandemic by filmmaker Sarah Delaney Buffett, his younger daughter. They feature his least-known songs, mostly ballads, and his memories of how he came to write them.

JB was diagnosed with Merkel Cell Carcinoma 4 years ago, and fought it quietly until the end. It is a rare form of skin cancer, which strikes only 1 in 130,000 Americans, predominantly older white men, and is difficult to diagnose before it has metatasized.

Not going to quibble at a time like this but the songs you referenced are a far cry from least known songs. Many of them are standards that fans grew up on. The purpose of the album Songs You Don’t Know was to reboot and re-record some of his older material. In retrospect its genesis might have been his diagnosis.

I will agree that the fan that thinks Jimmy Buffett begins and ends with Margaritaville might think otherwise.

I’ve been watching the procession on a webcam. There are thousands of tourists cruising down Duval. I can’t confirm whether they’re covered in oil.

Least-known isn't the same as unknown. Those of us who are fans have heard pretty much all of them at some time or another, and yes, many of them happen to be among my favorites from the albums, and probably yours, too.

In the films, Delaney has at hand a spreadsheet of set lists going back decades, and she mentions how many times each song has been performed live as they discuss them. In most cases the number was fewer than 10. I would say that tallies with the description, as so many fans came to the albums only after being taken to a live show. (I was the opposite; as a tween I first heard him on my sister's Bayou Room tapes; but I didn't go to my first concert until 1981.)
