This is such sad news. Elizabeth was a very courageous lady who bravely fought a tough battle. May she now rest in peace. My heart goes out to her family.

The doctor probably told her ad her family that it could be a matter of days TO weeks. Sadly, I have heard that a few times and never did the person make it more than a couple of days. I don't think it would have been in very good taste to announce that she most likely only had days left.

I think a lot has to do with the sheer will of the dying person. My dad fought incredibly hard and he was gone less than a day after he announced that he had decided enough was enough and that he was *giving up*. My dad had a very strong will and everyone felt that he simply willed himself to go.

Rest in peace Mrs Edwards. You were truly a class act.

she was truly a class act, who was dealt a rough few hands in the deck of life. I pray that she went peacefully, able to say her goodbyes, and that her children are raised in her spirit.

I also pray that she met up with her son, Wade, who passed 14+ years ago. What a wonderful reunion that must have been...

I heard on the news that even tho she passed at 10:15 this morning, word was not released until the younger kids came home from school....hearing that I figured her death occured maybe much quicker than they thought? Or maybe they wanted to keep things as consistent as possible. RIP Elizabeth, you are with your son.

She's been through so much, from losing her son to the cancer and the scandal. She had strength and grace. My prayers are with her children.

Yes, he betrayed her but that doesn't change the time they had-the bond they had created. She is the mother of his children, the woman he loved for years. I think I can give him a pass today seeing that she wanted him there in her final hours...must be that they still had a good relationship inspite of their marriage being over. Peace Elizabeth, your grace gives all of us a hopefulness.

You know what? I detest John Edwards for what he put her thru but I am in total agreement with you on your statement.

I agree. It was her choice. I found it interesting that she had opened a furniture store in recent years and he assisting her with that. At least according to a picture that I saw.

I was hoping she would make it to Christmas. So sad.

One thing that bugs me is that all the news releases are saying that she "lost her battle with cancer."

A good friend of ours died about this time 6 years ago after a long struggle with breast cancer. She was a professional ballerina, and to see what the cancer did to her body was heartbreaking. Her daughter and our DD went to the same school and took dance lessons together with her. They remain good friends to this day.

Anyway, when she was dying, she told her husband tearfully that "everyone will say that I LOST my battle. I don't want to be a LOSER."

She was not a loser, and neither was Elizabeth Edwards.

Death doesn’t make one a saint, and to those who watched the role Elizabeth played in supporting John in the 2008 Presidential race prior to his indiscretions going public at the end of it, let's just put it this way:

She was just like the rest of us, a human being with plenty of faults.

But that doesn't justify some of the comments about her passing I have read elsewhere; ones which show no compassion whatsoever for a mother or her loved ones. I wish the authors of those sentiments would leave the nastiness to the Joy Behars and Kathy Griffins of the world; they don't need to be emulated.
