A Campbell man who had been on a solo two-week backpacking trip through Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks was found dead in a remote wilderness area Friday, four days after his family reported him missing.
Gregory Raye, 50, appeared to have fallen to his death near the summit of Mount Brewer in Kings Canyon, according to the National Park Service. His body was spotted by a search helicopter in a steep, narrow chute above 13,000 feet elevation.
The intensive search for Raye involved 87 people with six dog teams, mounted patrols and five helicopters. The 66th Rescue Squadron of Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada also was called in to help search.
Raye's backpack and campsite were found early Friday morning by a search dog team, and his body was found a few hours later.
There will be an Irish wake on 10/14 (his BD) at a bar in CA, according to his son.
