RIP Canadian Penny

I know people will always complain but I'm fine with it because now my thoughts will be worth 5 cents. Lame, I know.

I told my friend last night that now you can no longer use the phrase "I'm penniless" to get sympathy. ;)

Time for the US to follow suit.

Jim

Good lord, let's hope they never do that!!

I just know my family in Canada is still mad about them not making paper $1 and $2 bills any more, they HATE loonies and toonies.

Considering the US is losing money on the penny, there is no reason for it to stick around. 2012 data has the penny as a $58million loser. Want to talk "government waste."

I hate all change. I understand the sales tax issue but I'd make everything flat dollars, round up or down. I guess I could live w/quarters. Round everything to the nearest quarter dollar & dump the rest.

Really??

Loonies and Toonies are AWESOME. $2 bills switched over during my lifetime, but I don't even remember having $1 bills.

Edit: I just looked up when the $1 bill was phased out. It was during my lifetime, but I was too young to remember them!

Good riddance penny! It cost 1.6 cents to make EACH penny. Can you believe that? Ridiculous! I love coins, just not the penny. I love the toonie and loonie. Its great!

I agree. I have never heard of someone hating the loonie and toonie. I love them because you can have $20 in change and not notice it til you actually count it.

When I was in college, there was a restaurant across the street from campus that had a "no chump change" policy. Tax was included in the pricing and everything was to the nearest quarter. When it was laundry day, you went there, got some food, and had quarters to do your laundry. :thumbsup2

I must be older than you, because I remember both quite clearly (loonie was in 1987 and the toonie in 1996) ;). No complaints here about them either but I'm very happy to lose the penny!

Well at least I can keep using the Canadian pennies here in the US. :rotfl2:

You can use them in Canada too - you just won't get them back as change (and you'll always have to use at least 5 of them at a time, since all costs will end in 5 or 0.

I thought this was going to be about a DISer I'd never heard of named "Canadian Penny". For a very brief moment, I was sad. Silly, I know, but I'm still glad no one here died :).

A couple of my uncles have always been in the habit of not carrying any change, they throw it into a jar at home, with the switch, they had a whole lot more change in their pocket. Tired of change wearing a hole in their pockets.
I hate it because, I always am flying in and out of Canada and have to deal with all that change and the metal detectors.

Sadly, most governments waste more money on things than this.

Time for them to get over the Loonie/Toonie thing.

It was costing 1.6 cents to make every penny. If it is similar in the US, it would make sense to start phasing them out as well.

We can still use them, but there are no new pennies being produced and they will no longer be given to the banks for circulation.

You don't need to take your change out of your pockets; unless you are carrying all your money in the form of change.
