Ridiculous diets- What crazy diet have you tried?

I thought it was so bizarre I called the Dr to question her to see if she knew what this was all about or if she was blindly endorsing something she heard about, and she assured me she has had patients that have been successful. I asked her if she prescribes the appetite suppresants (since they charge 70 bucks a week) and she said "of course not" but she sends people to them, I wonder if she gets kick backs or something/.

lol mixed messages.
She must. 500 calories is considered a light, healthy meal. Most women need 1200 calories a day just to function. Most in the medical and fitness communities recommend never to go under that. Please don't even consider it an alternative, it's SO dangerous.

I hate to advocate for the phentermine when I know that so many doctors won't prescribe it. In fact after I did the research on it, I was surprised MY doctor okayed it. BUT, she did go extensively over my medical history to make sure that there was nothing that might cause problems or interfere. And I really believe that it's the best thing that's ever happened to me. :thumbsup2

And! I'm not really sure why it's called "speed", legal or otherwise. It certainly didn't do anything to ME in that regard! I was a little disappointed that I didn't get the huge rush of energy

Let's see, I have done:

Susan Powter's method STOP THE MADNESS!
Three different Richard Simmons dealios
Weight-Watchers (but years ago not the new things they have)
The grapefruit diet
The low-carb diet
The no-meat diet
The listen to the insane dietician diet (the one who told me, "if you just ate vegetables, you'd be thin!" and the famous "You MUST be full after eating this meal!" Yeah, no, I wasn't.)
I went to a psychologist at $250 a month for a year
The starvation diet
Slim-Fast
What was the one where you took 6 pills before you ate and they expanded to make you feel full while you were eating?

The only thing I haven't tried are drugs. They seem like a great idea but it scares me.

These are just off the top of my head. I am just happy that I 'stopped the madness' and just let my weight stay the same for 8 years. I think I am healthier just being overweight and not going up and down and up and down again. But really, who knows for sure?

For those of you concerned about the 500 calorie diet (which is not what I was on), you can search "HCG diet" and there is an entire protocol that goes along with the HCG shots.

I was on a modified HCG diet in which I did eat more than 500 calories a day - probably 1000 or so, but I was not counting calories. I was on more of an Atkins diet as I ate alot of protein and fiber. I also followed the low glycemic index list of foods. Reducing sugar was the main goal as well as keeping my muscles healthy.

Research any diet you attempt. At my clinic, I am followed by a real MD and only started this after seeing the results my MIL and SIL had. It is not cheap and I could buy the HCG shots via the internet, but I chose to be followed by a MD as I do have some health concerns that I am losing the weight for.

As far as Phentermine being legal cocaine, I was on it 3 months and I am nearing the end of a month off and I have not craved it or had alot of food cravings - this week has been kind of bad as it is my monthly time. I have been given a prescription for next month, but I am going to see how I do before I use it. As with any drug, it can be abused. Also, like a PP said I never got a jolt of energy from it - but I did only take a half pill a day.

No, Phentermine is not over the counter. It requires a prescription (at least it does in NC).

Some doctors will prescribe it and others will not. Usually if the risk of keeping the weight on is higher than the risk of using the pills, the doctor will prescribe it. But your results may vary :goodvibes

Yes, it is prescribed everywhere, and I highly recommend you stay away from sites that say they can get it to you without an RX. :scared:

Exactly what luvthatdisney said, yep ;)

I would recommend the book "Naturally Thin" by Bethany Frankel (yep, the Bethany from The Real Housewives of New York). I've tried many diets, but never approached this way of eating before. In a nutshell it is about eating as much as you want if the food is healthy, and also eating whatever the heck you want and keeping the portion size in check. If you look it up on Amazon there are a TON of positive reviews that will tell you a lot about it. I finally feel free of diets - am on my way to my happy weight - and don't obsess about food anymore. She really explains HOW she thinks about eating. She has a cookbook out too, it's ok, but I would definately start w/ the 1st book - it explains so much more.

Dr. Siegal's cookie diet. You eat a total of 6 cookies during the day. Then eat a normal dinner. The cookies are supposed to suppress your appetite.

Let' see, when I was 16 and weighed 100 lbs my BBF talked me into thinking I needed to lose weight and needed diet pills to be size 0 instead of 2 so we bought maximum strength Dexitrim. Mind you I was taking Tavist D at the time. So after a few days I begin to notice my heart was racing and I was getting pain. So off to the Pediatrician I went. Looking at me & my demographic one would think he'd ask about diet pills, but he didn't ask a thing and I didn't say anything because I really didn't think I was taking a drug. So I had a bunch of tests and had to wear a monitor, I guess once the stuff cleared my system it all stopped but for ages I had no idea what had happened. Tthat is until the Phen-Phen thing exploded around the year 2000 and all the bricks slid into place, i knew exactly what I had done all those years ago.
I once went on a grapefruit diet that made me feel deathly sick all the time.

Another diet was the asparagus diet because it makes you lose water but can cause dehydration.

None of them were good ideas or took much weight off.

Not an actual diet, but I lost a few pounds during my last sinus infection because I had to take maximum strength Sudafed (the behind the counter stuff.). I guess it sped up my metabolism a bit. I DO NOT suggest this!!! Taking that dose of Sudafed will make you slightly crazy.
