Rides with "heart condition" warnings?

My father, who had a heart attack and triple bypass almost 20 years ago, as well as a few angioplastys after that, will be coming to WDW with us in a couple weeks. I'm just trying to anticipate which rides he won't be able to go on. Obviously he won't be going on any of the roller coasters or Tower of Terror or anything. We're not going to AK, so don't have to worry about anything there. The Splash Mtn. drop is kind of intense, so he should probably sit out on that as well.

What about Soarin? That's probably ok, right? I know Mission Space would be out....... Star Tours at HS is out......... am I missing anything?

I wouldn't rule out so many attractions. It's an advisory not a "not do" My grandfather had end stage heart failure, several heart attacks and a slew of health problems and when we went to AK 13 years ago, he rode Safari and Dinosaur (which was countdown to extinction then). He also rode BTMRR and Splash at MK. Would I recommend MS-orange..no way....but he may be ok on green. Your father knows his body best. As long as HE knows what he can and can't handle, let him make those choices. I was nervous with my "pa" but he did just fine. I thank my stars every day for that spring break trip as that was one of the last times we had to spend with him.

My Father in Law is 90 years old. He has had angioplasty and bypass surgery. We can't keep him off ANYTHING at Disney. He loves Space Mountain, Mission Space, Test Track, Dinosaur and everything else. He says, he is going to live until he dies. He is the example I want to follow in life!!!

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Get out --- He's riding those at 90 years old!?! Holy crap! :worship: My father's only 62. Living until you die is a great motto......I just don't want it to happen at Disney World, lol.

I think it depends on how your father, handles certain rides. Most people who have ridden similar rides knows how they feel when they are on them. If they're the types whose adrenaline starts pumping etc. It might not be the best idea to ride.

Myself, I have high blood pressure and have no problems riding thrill rides. To me they don't really get my adrenaline pumping. I just enjoy them and can't keep from smiling and laughing.

With that being said, if there's any doubt, I wouldn't do it. Safety first. There are plenty of other things he can do.

I love this!

I think Rock n Roller Coaster is a big no-no. There is significant g-force pressure on the takeoff and it could be a serious problem. Folks have died after riding it because if the g-forces with a heart condition.

My DH has a "natural" bypass. His heart grew new collateral veins around a blockage so he doesn't have any surgeries or anything, but we try to pay attention to the heart warnings. He won't do RnRCoaster, ToT, Mission Space, and he hasn't tried Everest yet. He does fine on all the mountains at MK, Star Tours, Test Track, Soarin'.

What does your father's doctor say? That's the advice I would take over anyone here on the boards since we don't know your father or his condition.

I have a broken neck and avoided the thrill rides for almost five years because I just didn't ask my doctor what I could or couldn't do. I finally asked him and guess what - he said I have more of a risk from being in a rear-end car accident than I do riding a roller coaster. Five years of Disney World without thrill rides because I didn't ask the one person who could actually tell me my options.

Ask your father's doctor.

It seems like the OP was looking for a list of rides that have warnings for people with heart conditions. Does anyone know where there is one?

::yes::
Follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES Board or the disABILITIES FAQs thread.
Post 23 on page 2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread has a list of attractions with warnings, plus a little about the attraction to help you decide if the warning applies to you. If in doubt, you can discuss with your doctor, ask the CM at the attraction for more information, have someone else in your party ride to give an opinion, or sit it out.

The warning they use is general and doesn't give any information about what the specific warning or that attraction is. Those attractions with warnings are marked on the park maps, marked at the sign at the queue entrance and also marked at least once before boarding.

Also, Soarin' gets brought up a lot as a ride with warnings - it doesn't have the general WDW warning - just fear of heights and motion sickness.

yes, thanks, that would be perfect. I just wanted to get an idea ahead of time of which rides would have it. We're going in less than 2 weeks so I doubt he'll see his dr. before then but even if he did, I don't think he would ask. He'll probably be like "eh, I'll be fine" but I'm a paranoid worry wart so I'm always in the camp of "better safe than sorry"

I always thought the "heart conditions" phrasing meant congential heart defects, particularly those involving the heart's electrical conduction. Like the little kid who died on Mission Space...turned out he had an undiagnosed problem of this sort. I've never thought of it applying to folks who've had surgical repair for arterial blockages. Their hearts are basically fine, though obviously they have to work to prevent future buildup of arterial plaque...but they have no issues that increased heartrate or extra G-forces would exacerbate.

I bet if your dad asks his doctor, he might be able to do a lot more rides than you think! :thumbsup2

ETA: And he probably could just call the office rather than make an appointment.

Wow, your Dad is only 62 -- my DH is 67 and rides everything. He's going to be just like his Dad.

I agree that "to be on the safe side" you should check with your Dad's doctor. Even though my father-in-law does it all, yes, at 90.

Star Tours has various movements ride to ride. I'd check with a CM before riding. As for rides to avoid:

BTMR
Splash Mt
Space Mt
Mission Space (listed before I know)
Test Track
RNRC
Tower of Terror
Dinosaur
Everest

Kilimanjaro Safaris and the Tomorrowland Speedway aren't recommended, but I find that 100% false.

My elderly father(with heart condition) went on Space Mountain and lived. :thumbsup2

i can't believe all these "older" people that go on the rides. I'm 42 and afraid I'm going to throw out a hip or something, lol. :lmao:

My dad went on EE 3 times when he was 63,lol. 42 is not old;)

He also had a heart attack with angioplasty at 44. The other rides he did were BTMRR, Splash, Space Mountain, Dinosaur, Soarin', and Mission: Space-orange. He did get sick on MS, but that was a nausea issue. He ended up being fine.
