Hi everyone! I would like your input. My son is 7 he's 46" what rides do you think I should avoid for him. I know he's tall enough to ride most rides but I'm terrified that I will put him on something not knowing what it actually does or under estimate it by watching these videos (most of them seem pretty dark and hard to tell whats happening) he does not like big drops. He's only been on a few "Roller Coasters" mainly little toddler type rides and a couple little bigger ones if anyone here has been to fiesta Texas in San Antonio TX. He rode The Roadrunner and now he's kinda afraid to try new rides. He seen other little boys riding it and said he wanted to. I wish I would have rode it before I let him on it. He was 5 then I would have known it was to much but he begged his uncle to take him so he did and it scared him. He says he can handle space mnt. and big thunder. By watching the videos I think big thunder will be ok. I can't tell about space mountain even the videos with the lights on. What do you think I should avoid?
Now for my 2 almost 3 year old shes 38" never rode any rides besides little rides outside of stores. Of the smaller kid rides what should I avoid.
I know it's hard for y'all to say because you don't know them and every kid is different. I've never been to Disney so I'm just kinda looking for how your kid did or how you think a child would do on them.
Thank you so much everyone!

I think Space Mountain is about as thrilling as Roadrunner, but it seems scarier because it's in the dark and you don't know what's coming up next. That's for sure one I'd want to ride before putting him on it if he was scared of Roadrunner Express. People will probably tell you to put him on the Barnstormer because it's a short rollercoaster with a low height requirement. But it moves very fast, and my 7 year old was literally doing the silent scream the whole way. However, she loved both Mine Train and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Have so much fun on your first trip!

Thank you! @TexasPete I will definitely put him on that one first then. The last thing I want to do is scare him because I know how fun it can be when he's ready and not afraid so I don't want to scare him away from coasters for sure! Because I think the Barnstormer was in the area we were planning to go to before Space Mnt. Is there any rides that are for smaller heights that are scary? I dont know what the 2 year old will be able to handle. Thank you again.

I have one child who's been slow to get accustomed to rollercoasters but she's slowly coming around. She says she doesn't like big drops but it's clearly more than that. She has always liked mine train and been fine with Barnstormer. She did not like thunder mtn but I think that was more because it is stupid loud when you're in the tunnels. Like 'OSHA ear plugs required' loud (I hate that myself and have started just covering my ears). Splash Mtn has a very big drop so if it's truly the falling part he may not like that. If I were going to put a leery kid on rides at MK i would first do Barnstormer then 7DMT then thunder then either Space or Splash depending on whether darkness or drops are more scary. If at any point the child finds a ride too scary, don't do the others (although I would make an exception for mine train if the issue with Barnstormer was that it was too jerky). My ride leery kid loves Soarin, tolerates Test Track (you do a little bit of swerving in a car and go 65 mph in an open car in a large circle). Toy Story Midway Mania is generally a safe and fun for all ride. She's not a fan of Tower of Terror (drops). Everest is a tall drop and backwards thru darkness. I would say if he is good on BTMR and Splash this becomes an option. Dinosaur is jerky but not a rollercoasters. My kids found it very scary.

As to your other question, what scares your two year old? If villains do, then Under the Sea has a scene with Ursula. Pirates and Haunted Mansion both have some creepiness and Pirates has cannon balls and yelling. Frozen has the snow monster and he yells at you (like in the movie).

If your 2 yo is afraid of the dark, I don't know what to tell you.

My 16 yo is a huge chicken. Hated BTMR would not even try 7DMT. She loves splash. That is her one big thrill ride. There is only 1 scary part and by the time you are in it it is over.

It took DS9 quite a while to warm up to the bigger thrill rides. I would start with Barnstormer and 7DMT and then move up to BTMRR and, if he is up for it, Space Mountain. There are no big drops on Space Mountain, but, because it's in the dark, it's a little disorienting IMHO and there is one little drop that you don't realize it's little until it over, (because the build up to it makes it feel like it might be big) LOL! You might want to look at Splash while you are there (you can watch the drop) and see if he is ok with that. I hate drops, but I can handle that one if I take a deep breath beforehand. I would avoid ToT, RnRC and Expedition Everest. My DS9 finally worked up to EE on our last trip and wants to do ToT in August. It took us a few years to get to that point, however.

I think 7 is old enough for all rides at WDW. I think the most thrilling ride is probably RNRC but I think a 7 year old should be fine. I took my 8 year old on the Hulk at IOA and she loved it, she did all the coasters at Busch gardens too. I think it's best to encourage them to try everything.

My son was 7 when we went last August. He went on every 'Big' ride from Tower of Terror to Expedition Everest... at that age and height they are able to go on all the Disney rides. However, there are rides he isn't planning on going back on in the near future. He likes moderate thrill rides but doesn't like 'spooky' things like Haunted Mansion or Tower of Terror. So, depends on your son's temperament... what's great for one 7 year old may be terrifying for another.

Here in SA so 7DMT is not as fast or jerky as road runner. Big Thunder should be ok as there are no big drops. If he is ok with 7DMT then Big Thunder will be fine. Space Mnt I'm not sure due to it being dark. Splash Mnt has a big drop at the end similar to the log ride at Fiesta Texas. At other parks I would say no to Everest at AK. Fast with a average size drop and goes backwards in part of the ride. Dinosaur is not bad just very jerky. For the little one that's a tough one. Might have to stay with dumbo and Aladdin rides which are like the plane ride at Fiesta Texas. Barn stormer is much faster then the kid coaster at FT. Hope that helps

I'd definitely say try 7DMT for a first roller coaster ride - if he can handle that then Thunder Mountain would be a good step up. If he hates drops then Splash Mountain is probably out. Space doesn't have drops but is in the dark and unpredictable, so I'd stay away from that until he has shown no fear on the others. At Hollywood Studios the Rockin' Roller Coaster is a major coaster (LIM launch and big inversion start the ride) - I'd stay away from that one and Tower of Terror. He'd love the Midway Mania ride. Star Tours is a simulator so nothing unpredictable there. Animal Kingdom - I'd avoid Expedition Everest if he doesn't like the other coasters. I'd put that coaster in between Thunder Mountain and RnRC, though closer to Thunder Mountain than RnRC (it goes backwards at one point and has one curving drop, but no inversions and no LIM launch). Test Track and Soarin' would probably be OK for him - no drops and TT goes fast but is on a flat course. Soarin' is a flight simulator ride and you hang over the screen - so it feels like you are high but you do not go "fast" and you don't drop at all.

No one in my family enjoys big "thrill rides." When my son was younger he was, at first, afraid of many of the rides at WDW. Here's how we helped him decide what he wanted to try (and encouraged him to try some he was hesitant about). We started off by explaining that Walt Disney created Disneyland and Disney World so there was a place where kids and adults could all have fun together, the key word being "FUN." Walt's goal was not to REALLY scare anyone or make them feel yucky on a ride - hence the reason The Haunted Mansion isn't really all that scary. We told him that the rides all have some kind of storyline and that you have to look around at everything while you are riding so you can follow the story (that helped him not only be focused on when a big drop might happen). We let him stand outside for as long as he wanted to watch the rides that are visible (BTMRR, Splash Mountain, etc) and told him where the biggest drops are. We pointed out happy, smiling kids his age that were getting off the rides. He would then typically decide on his own to ride things and before any drops I would tell him to keep his eyes open (I think they feel worse when you close your eyes) and to take big breath right before the drop so he could scream as part of the "fun." Then we would make a big deal about laughing during and after any drops. He ended up loving every ride at MK, even if he did get a bit nervous right before the big drop on Splash Mountain. In fact, he ended up being a huge Space Mountain fan and we would wait outside while he rode it over and over (we don't like how jerky it is).

Now, I will say that after he figured out that the vast majority of rides he was concerned about were no big deal, he got a bit overly confident and thought he could handle Tower of Terror just fine. Personally, I don't like really big roller coasters but TT is my very favorite WDW ride. I find the drop fun and not at all scary although for years I was sure I would hate every second of the ride. My son - not so much. He did actually hate every second of it and we are glad he had already "conquered" all the other big rides at WDW because I think he would have been scared of them if he had ridden it before the others. Expedition Everest has never been his favorite ride but he does it. He always says the thought of the big drop scare him but, like many people, it happens so fast that you often don't even realize it's happening.

I agree with others about starting with Barnstormer, then 7DMT. Then I would do BTMRR, Splash Mountain, and finally Space Mountain. If it's just drops he doesn't like then you could move onto RNRC, there are no drops but you go pretty fast and corkscrew upside down. I hate big roller coasters because of the drops and I have no problem with RNRC at all, my son was fine the entire ride. EE can be a tough one for some and many hate TT. I found that if we had a positive attitude about the rides and made sure that he saw that we enjoyed the ride, he was just fine.

I think the idea is the same for your younger one. Be really positive and point out the storyline on the rides as they are happening, it will distract her if she is concerned about the dark on something or if she thinks something is a bit scary. When we were concerned that our son might find something scary when he was that age we would tell him there was a "silly" part coming up. It seemed to always work. Since you have already watched videos of the rides you will know if something is coming up that might be scary to her. We had our son giggling throughout Haunted Mansion at a very young age because we pointed out all kinds of detail when he was very young and focused on funny and silly things. He has never found HM scary in the least bit whereas I was TERRIFIED of HM until I was 10 because of what I THOUGHT it was going to be like. Then I had a friend point out that HM is more funny than scary and I got brave and tried it. Afterward I was bummed that I had missed out for so long thinking it would scare me.

I see some kids who are naturally fearless and I was not one of them. I like all of these rides now but wish I was pushed a little more when I was younger.

Eventually it was peer pressure that made me try BTMRR and Space Mountain. But maybe I could've learned to overcome such doubts earlier, which is useful in many places in life.

I don't know. I'm not a parent yet. Not telling anyone what's best, just how I think about when I was 7.

The rides I would stay away from for him would be Tower of Terror, Expedition Everest, Space Mountain, and Rock N Roller Coaster. I think he would really like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, there are no real big drops and it rides pretty smooth, Big Thunder should be alright, the only problem with it is it rides so rough . Splash Mountain may also be alright, it is nice slow boat ride through the mountain seeing a lot of characters and scenes then one giant drop at the end that is over in about 3 seconds.

7DMT should be a great one to start your ds on as it as smooth as coasters get. I can no longer ride jerky rides because of a neck issue, but can ride the 7DMT in the front row (only) as that's the smoothest.

From that ride, you will be able to gauge what others he might enjoy riding. You definitely don't want to scare him. I watched parents lie to their children so much that the kids were scared of everything as they couldn't trust their own parents to be truthful with them - and that's sad!!

Thank you all so much for your responses it's great hearing from others who have experienced WDW and the rides with or without kids! I'm defiantly going to take y'alls advice into consideration and start him out slow and easy. See what we can work him up to. Thank you all again! 41 days

I didn't see anyone mention Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom, maybe I missed it, so I have a warning for that. My then 7 year old loved big Thunder Mountain (7 Dwarves kept going down so he never rode it at that age) and he loved Star Tours, so I figured Dinosaur would be no big deal... I am not a roller coaster person myself, so on rider switch I took him onto Dinosaur to try it out. he was ok, for the first 10 seconds. Then he grabbed on to me both arms onto one of mine, the tram was jerking all over the place, I was half falling out, clinging for dear life with one arm praying I didn't fall while he screamed, and screamed the most terrified scream ever, eyes shut. I was so focused on not falling out I couldn't tell you what was going on in the ride, but that one freaked him out horribly.

I totally forgot about Dinosaur. It is dark, jerky, and rough with some scary parts. She might want to skip it too. It hurts my back it is so jerky.
