Chapter 5 – AK Morning (cont) - Kilimanjaro Safari

After a couple of wild rides, it was time to head off for another "wild" ride. Jonathan was still off doing his own thing so Magdalene, Katharina and I headed across the park to Africa to go on a safari. It was still early so the wait time in standby was fairly short.

Soon we were in our ride vehicle, got our greeting of "jambo" and were ready for our adventure. Now all we had to do was wait for the signal it was safe to enter
093.jpg

There were lots of animals out that morning, but it was hard to get many really good pictures with all the bouncing and jerking of our vehicle. I love when the animals are near or crossing the road at times so the guide has to stop and you can get some really good "shots," which I guess is not a good thing to say in an animal reserve (although probably not as bad as saying bomb in the presence of the TSA agents prepared to put you through a cavity search in the airport). You can still often get some pretty good animal butt shots. Katharina and Magdalene seemed to enjoy checking out the one on the rhino. :rotfl:

096.jpg

Here's a close-up for those who want a better view.

097.jpg

I'm not sure what this group did to warrant becoming hippo food as punishment. Maybe they actually said something about getting some good "shots" while they were on an earlier ride.....???

100.jpg

Whatever it was, the hippos look ready and more than capable of handling their special treat.

101.jpg

Of course, what safari through the wilds of Africa would be complete without getting a glimpse of the elusive baobab tree? These trees are leafless 9 months out of the year (or maybe even 12), but seem to have acquired an aviarian growth of some type.

104.jpg

We finally reached the savanna where you can spot numerous types of animals, the featured of which are the favorite of our dear Ms. Kathy. Probably not coincidentally these two giraffes were misbehaving and harrassing this poor animal (I think that is a waterbuck?)

Not that I'm insinuating anything about Ms. Kathy................ :rolleyes1

107.jpg

The giraffes seemed to give up the chase when the food truck showed up. Maybe they were serving coffee from Starbucks or breakfast from Waffle House???

2b9e50fb-4eef-4f0c-928f-28e9ef3b526a.jpg

Leaving the savanna we entered elephant country. Here is one of the baby elephants.

109.jpg

111.jpg

Two of the younger elephants with the rest of the herd.

114.jpg

Those giraffes seem to show up anywhere there is food, although I'm not sure they are as capable of handling these tour violators as the hippos are.

119.jpg

Our guide spotted a white rhino down this trail and stopped to let us have a good view. Unfortunately it appeared the rhino wasn't too happy about it. It turned towards us and began to head our way at an accelerated pace. I'm not sure if our guide made the correct decision by choosing to move along, but I was happy he didn't stick around to find out.

123.jpg

It must take a lot out of a cheetah to run so fast. This is the only pose I ever see them in when I take this tour.......

18e0c642-7b30-4132-b00e-f9da2b58ce25.jpg

Speaking of animals you only see one pose from......................

129.jpg

But then something I never experienced before happened................

.........and I'll let the pictures speak for themselves............................

.........but for those who suspected that the lions on the safari were animatronic......................

I give you............................

130.jpg

135.jpg

138.jpg

Seeing the lion up walking around was quite a thrill for someone who normally gets nothing more than a very small glimpse of his mane. I don't remember if Magdalene and Katharina said they had ever seen the lion up and walking about, but we all seemed to enjoy our good fortune.

The ostriches seem to always be close to the road when you ride by.

141.jpg

Our safari done, Magdalene had a shop she wanted to visit on the way out. I did manage to spot something of interest while I was in there.

142.jpg

143.jpg

I seriously thought about getting one of these, but I was afraid Rosie would try and take it if she ever found out.

Before heading out, Magdalene did a tribute for Kathy's Mr. Mark.

8cbe201d-28fc-4ee2-a995-ad77a4654586.jpg

I'm not sure what the hand thing is.........maybe she was doing a tribute for Rosie walking around leading her troops carrying wooden Marv???

Shopping done, Magdalene suggested we take a break. We had already done everything she and Katharina really wanted to do before heading out for the day. There was a coffee/tea stand heading into Asia that I think they had stopped at a few days before; the Royal Anandapur Tea Company I believe. It is on the right side just down from Yak & Yeti. I'm not sure what Katharina had, but I believe Magdalene had some hot tea and I had just regular hot coffee. The nice thing about this area is right beside the stand are tables and a sitting area beside the water which provided a nice shaded area to sit and just talk.

About the time we got our orders Jonathan texted me he was ready to join back up with us and wanted to know where we were. He wasn't very far away so this turned out to be a good location and good timing. He got something to drink (probably iced coffee) and joined us at the table.

We all "meet" so many wonderful people here on the DIS, and get to know them well enough to consider them at least DISfriends that we care more about than your typical internet contact. Sometimes we get to have DISmeets with some of them where we meet basically on the run or briefly at times, grab a quick picture to prove it happened, and continue on happily knowing that we have now made a personal connection with that person we laugh, sometimes cry, and joke around with on the DIS.

This however was one of my more special memories from this trip. When you get to sit down over an unhurried meal or in this case with a drink in hand and just talk with people, you create a special bond I think. The four of us had about a half hour or so to just sit, talk and share with each other on a more personal level and I felt like I really got to know these two very special ladies. :goodvibes I got to learn a little about their daily lives and what they do for a living, and share some of my life with them. I truly hope I have many chances to meet up with both of them during our travels in the future!!!

After we finished our drinks and conversation, Katharina and Magdalene headed off for the day. We knew we would have more time together the next day before parting ways and heading back for our respective homes. After they left Jonathan and I briefly discussed if there was anything else we really wanted to do at AK but there really wasn't so we also headed for the exit. We still had an eventful evening ahead of us as we had a surprise DISmeet in our plans. Well, at least for part of us it was surprise....................

Coming up Chapter 6 – SECURITY!!!

I don't get this fascination with doing an update at the top of the page. :confused3

I'll be back later to read...off to lunch now.

/
Juhu!! An update! Katharina will be so pleased to have one waiting for her when she returns from her vacation, she is off hiking in the Bavarian Forest at the moment.

I had no idea that it was the Safari with you when we saw the Lion walking. I have more or less given up taking pictures on it as they rarely turn out so great, but your lion one is fantastic!! And I can tell you who these poor hippo people are as I was one of them on my last trip! ;) It is a severe punishment for paying Disney even more money than necessary to get park admission into AK. If you want to find out more, you will need to read my trip report which will soon be coming to a discussion board close to you!

I have no idea what the hand thing is either. I can only think that I wanted to try some kind of "elegant lady" pose. But I do think my hand does look good in that picture and how many hand pictures does one have? I can come back to this one in 30 years time when I am old and wrinkly and think to myself how nice my hands looked in 2011! :rotfl2:

.........but for those who suspected that the lions on the safari were animatronic......................

I give you............................

130.jpg

135.jpg

138.jpg

Seeing the lion up walking around was quite a thrill for someone who normally gets nothing more than a very small glimpse of his main.

That is Awesome! I am one of those that never gets anything but the main. But you know - it still is possible for animatronic animals to get up and mover. Just saying! :rotfl2:

142.jpg

143.jpg

I seriously thought about getting one of these, but I was afraid Rosie would try and take it if she ever found out.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw those spoons! :rotfl:

Speaking of being hippo food, did you see this news story?

Yeah, you got to see the lion walking around! :cool1: Or is Disney just getting better at their animatronics? :scratchin

I'm glad that you got to spend some time with Magdalene and Katherina. Meeting people like them is a great benefit of the DIS. :goodvibes

very nice you could just sit and relax and have a drink with them.

weither it be what you had or a bud light lime, it all works.
;)

You are bringing the funny today. You must have woken up on the funny side of the bed.

Of course, what safari through the wilds of Africa would be complete without getting a glimpse of the elusive baobab tree? These trees are leafless 9 months out of the year (or maybe even 12), but seem to have acquired an aviarian growth of some type.

104.jpg

Ah yes- The only months I have not visited would be Feb, Aug, and Nov. and I doubt they spring leaves only to have them fall out the next month. :rotfl2:

We finally reached the savanna where you can spot numerous types of animals, the featured of which are the favorite of our dear Ms. Kathy. Probably not coincidentally these two giraffes were misbehaving and harrassing this poor animal (I think that is a waterbuck?)

Kind of like when the game ends when the ice cream truck shows up. :teeth:

I guess he was mad the giraffes got the food truck and he was waiting for the truck to come down his block. He could hear the music..

I seriously thought about getting one of these, but I was afraid Rosie would try and take it if she ever found out.

She probably would if only to hit you with when you misbehave; and she'd need a lot of those as they'd probably break from all the smacks with them.

Before heading out, Magdalene did a tribute for Kathy's Mr. Mark.

Coming up Chapter 6 – SECURITY!!!

Now this is much less surprising than the lion.

And I can tell you who these poor hippo people are as I was one of them on my last trip! ;) It is a severe punishment for paying Disney even more money than necessary to get park admission into AK. If you want to find out more, you will need to read my trip report which will soon be coming to a discussion board close to you!

I think Magdalene was just about to start dancing....

I seem to have forgotten a lot of details about this trip, but I remember the tea break as well, though not what I had... It was very nice just to sit and talk and get to know each other, not distracted by lions, yetis or dinosaurs!

I don't get this fascination with doing an update at the top of the page. :confused3

I'll be back later to read...off to lunch now.
Not really a fascination, but if you can pull it off that means when someone clicks on Last Page of your TR, the first thing they see is there is an update. :thumbsup2

Juhu!! An update! Katharina will be so pleased to have one waiting for her when she returns from her vacation, she is off hiking in the Bavarian Forest at the moment.
That sounds like a great trip! :woohoo: And looks like she is back! :cool1:

Yeah, you got to see the lion walking around! :cool1: Or is Disney just getting better at their animatronics? :scratchin
Looks like you and Mary Ellen are both trying to rain on my lion parade........... :sad2:
