RideMax or Touring Plans?

We have used RideMax with grand success for all our past DL trips, saving hours in line and loving it. I seem to recall, though, people saying that Touring Plans is more accurate for WDW?

We have our first WDW trip coming up in October and I'm wondering which company would be the best use of our time - any thoughts to share with me?

Thank you!pixiedust:

I've never used Ride Max. Considered it, but I would have to do both, because Touring Plans has been so good. Used it twice at WDW and once at DL. Will be using it again for WDW and Universal in March.

Personally, after trying both, I've found neither to be that helpful or effective, but if you must choose, TP is slightly better (and free) but even their predictions were mostly unrealistic and required excessive criss-cossing the park.

I'll be "that guy" (there's always at least one in every one of these type of threads) and recommend easyWDW.com. There, Josh has cheat sheets, crowd calendars, recommended touring plans, etc... to help make the most of your time at WDW. His tend to be very doable and realistic.

It sounds like you didn't do the TP subscription service that allows personalized plans. I think the OP is specifically asking about that. It works great. We have always finished ahead or on time and usually have time to reride stuff.

I tried ridemax and found it lacking compared to TP at WDW for the following reasons:

1. Cannot alter the order of the rides - they just suggest the "optimum"
2. Cannot input FP+ return time windows (it just suggest getting a FP+ for a certain time)
3. You put the latest time you want to enter a ride (not the latest time you want to leave the park!) and it schedules a ride for around then. It suggested a 3.5h break just so I could get on a ride at 4:30pm, vs just scheduling into for 1pm. In either case it was like a 10m wait.

Maybe it's better at DL but I've never tried either service at DL, cause I haven't been yet.

I use TP for the personalized plans, crowd predictors, etc. and have had success with them in the past. This was the first time with FP+ so we will see how that works out but I have my plans, printed them on 4X6 paper that I now have on Ring on my bag :)

The personalized plans were good to be able to add FP+ times to and move things around.

We did it with FP+ in late July, except for 7DMT, it was just as good as before. I think they didn't have enough historical data for 7DMT.

It suggested to do RD on AM EMH instead of FP+, but the wait was already really bad unless you got to the rope way, way early and then pushed and ran people over to get there. We did it after Wishes with a posted wait of 60 min, but it was really 35min. We're going again in March, and this time it says to get the FP+.

We've always used RideMax at WDW (and on our one trip to DL), but we haven't been back since the whole FP+ deal. I'd be interested in hearing how RideMax is holding up to FP+.

Also, you don't have to pay at Touring Plans to get the personalized plans. You just have to have a basic login, which you can get for free. I haven't paid for the service in several years, and it still lets me log in and make personalized plans.

My experience has been that ridemax is better for DL and touring plans for WDW.
This is only based on 3 uses in DL and 2 in WDW.

That's another site I haven't even looked at yet! Thanks!

I personally consider the $15-20 subscription for RideMax/Touring Plans/any site that makes my days in the park totally worth it. A drop in the bucket to make an expensive vacation more pleasant. I will probably end up subscribing to both but want to know various experiences.

Thanks!

I had never heard of RideMax until your thread, so I can't compare the two. I will say the personalized plans from Touring Plans have been extremely accurate and very beneficial for us. I highly recommend those for WDW.

Let me start by saying that my information is outdated and based solely on my memory from several years ago. But, I think sharing my experiences will help, since I've used both.

My family used Touring Plans in August 2010 in WDW and it was horrible. My dad did all the planning for that trip, and he is generally pretty good at it, but I think he relied too heavily on the printed plans and didn't think about it himself. After the first day, I took each plan and re-did the night before we went to each park, just based on my own common sense (and I hadn't even been to the parks for over 10 years- I just put some thought into it based on how popular I thought each ride would be), and we were much happier. The problem we had with the touring plans was that we are fast walkers without children or old people, and so we were able to get to each attraction and ride it much faster than the plans said. I think I remember being done by 10:00 with everything that it had planned until noon. But we knew we couldn't just skip ahead because timing matters. I think that if my dad had thought about it, we probably could have made better plans, so this doesn't necessarily reflect on the quality of Touring Plans, but that's what happened for us. We had paid for the subscription, by the way; we were not using the free plans.

In August 2011, I used RideMax when I went to DL by myself. It was amazing! Though it was one of the most crowded times of the year, I didn't wait longer than 10 minutes for anything except the Explorer Canoes, and that was only 20 minutes. The catch is, I spent HOURS on the RideMax site (I think there's an app now, but I didn't have a smart phone at the time so I just did all my planning ahead of time and printed out my own itineraries). I tried several different permutations, compared many different scenarios, and I had several back-up plans. For example, I wanted to ride Star Tours twice, get a Star Tours FP (it's my favorite ride and the new version had just opened), ride Space Mountain and then ride Peter Pan. But if I got to Peter Pan and the line was too long, I had 3 other times during my trip that I knew I could ride it (and I only wanted to ride it once, so once I rode it I checked if off from 3 different places on my list). I had lists and lists of what I could ride at what times and what some alternatives were if certain things didn't work out. I used RideMax mostly just for the expertise of wait times for each day, but I made my own itineraries. If I remember correctly, there were some maps, too, such as for World of Color areas, and they were really helpful.

The short answer is, it really depends how much you're willing to put into it. I can't give you an answer for which is better, because I think either can work as long as you use them for what they're good for and don't depend on them heavily without doing your own research. My family's results varied so much because my dad planned the wdw trip and I planned my DL trip. But personally, I was much happier with RideMax. I'm not using any paid service for my upcoming wdw trip, but if I was, I would choose RideMax.

Thank you for sharing! Great info!

Honestly, right now I don't think either are all that accurate at WDW thanks to FP+ and the constant tinkering and testing being done.

I have always used RideMax and learned after our first outing to set it at the slow setting because it then doesn't have you cross the park over and over during the day. I've heard that complaint about TP, but am now also hearing that RM hasn't dealt with FP+ well, so I don't know what I'm going to use this year. Was even thinking about doing without a plan since we have been there so many times, but we've never been with FP+ and it's making me a wreck!

After reading this thread am seriously thinking about TPs.

Haven't been and already hate the FP+ system!

We had good luck with the personalized TP last fall. I also used EasyWDW to help pick days.

I plan on doing the same for next fall. I have even already started making my personalized TPs.

I used touring plans at MK in WDW yesterday 12/14 and it was very helpful, as it has been in the past when I have used it. We did not wait longer than 20 minutes in standby, even though it was more crowded at the park than predicted. I was glad for the plan in light of the crowds, and I used the personalized plan, as I have a subscription.

There are settings for TP that allow control over walking distance versus waiting time. See if those help.
