Ride questions

We just finished going through all the rides on the Universal Website, then watched a bunch of rides on YouTube. Now we are even more excited!! But I have a few questions:
(Sorry if I keep comparing to Disney, but it is all I know!)

1. Pteradon Flyers--is this like a Astro Orbitor, or Dumbo-type ride?

2. Revenge of the Mummy--is this like Dinosaur, or Indiana Jones at Disneyland? Kind of a rough ride through scenes and stuff? But not really a coaster?

3. Men in Black--You are in a car, and you shoot the aliens? Not too wild?

4. Twister-not a ride, but a show you stand and watch?

5. Beetlejuice--worth watching? My kids haven't seen the movie, and it has been forever since I saw it. Is it worth it?

6. The Boneyard--what is this? I saw the name of it in one of my touring books, but there is no mention of it on the UO site.

7. Dueling Dragons--which one do you prefer, Fire or Ice? Are they basically the same? Same amount of inversions, drops, etc...?

8. Is Spiderman totally nauseating? Watching the video, it looks like you could have some motion sickness with this. And there is a huge drop at the end? It says 400 feet in my book. Isn't the Towerof Terror 199 feet high? So 2x that height??!! If you take off the glasses, or close your eyes, does that help, or is it still wild?

9. Poseidons Fury--is this just a show to watch? Any good?

10. Storm Force Acceleration--like the teacups?

We have never been to USO. We went to USHollywood a few years ago. The kids were too young to enjoy anything though, and we just kind of wandered through the park. Now they are itching to do the coasters, and I am the chicken!!

We have one day at each park, and are staying at the RPR. Any advice, suggestions would be great.

1.Pteradon Flyers is a small inverted swinging coaster. In order to ride you have to be with a child under 54 inches.Small fun coaster.
2.Revenge of the mummy is a smooth coaster. It is a coaster. Its not rough, it does have several scenes, and it is in the dark. Whats it like? Nothing at disney.
3.MIB-Think Buzz lightyear, with a pulse. Its so much fun, you shoot aliens and spin.
4.Twister is a stand up attraction, a soundstage attraction where you watch a twister tear apart a scene from the movie.
5.Beetlejuice is a musical review that uses the classic Universal monsters in a new contemporary way. Fun.
6.The Boneyard is where they have displays during certan events and concerts during others. Nothing really to it.
7. Dueling dragons is dueling coaster that pits you against the other dragon with near misses. While each coaster is similar, they both have different elements. I prefer fire, because it is faster, and has different types of inversions. Most people prefer Ice because of the wall.
8.Spiderman is a 3D simulator that pits you against villains. You move from room to room along a track. Not nauseating too much, unless 3D simulators like Soarin, and Star Tours make you sick. The drop is so intense....wanna know how high it is? 2 feet. It only feels like you drop 400 feet. Quite possibly the best attraction in the world, EVA!
9.Poseidon is a walkthrough interactive show....its a good way to beat the heat, and it is a lot of fun...imho. Some people find it boring, but it does have very good elements.
10.Storm Force-Teacups, with style.
11.Stop trying to plan and just go have fun. Universal isnt as HUGE as disney so the need to plan a "tour" isnt necessary.

Haha, alright, lets tackle this thing.

1. P-Flyers is a suspended coaster that goes around Camp Jurassic. 90 second ride. LInes get huge for it.

2. Mummy is half dark ride, half coaster. You are always on coaster track, so there are no hydraulics on the ride vehicle like Dinosaur. It goes through various show scenes, then launches you into a coaster portion in the dark. No loops, just speed and turns.

3. The cars go the same speed throughout the ride on MIB. there are a few parts where it spins, but no more than 3 or 4 spins at a time.

4. You are correct about Twister

5. Haven't seen the show.

6. Boneyard? Might have been confused with Camp Jurassic, which is like the play area in Dinoland at AK with the same name.

7. I prefer Fire. They are both totally different coasters. Trust me.

8.Spiderman isn't too bad. Star Tours gives me a bigger headache then Spiderman. And the drop at the end is sensory. It is not a real drop. The car you are in never elevates at all.

9. Poseidon is a walk through special effects show. You have a guide and various things happen along the way. The show as a total of 3 rooms in it.

10. Like the teacups, with music and strobe lights (best seen at night).

Incorrect. The car does elevate, spin (obviously), and descend. Granted, it's not much, but it's visible. If you've ever been in Spider-Man's control booth, you will see the scoops move in all directions. Or ask a spidy tech.

Track is flat. Car moves. That's it. No calling out, he's just trying to further clarify, Tim. Maurader knows the days of heat, cranky guests and the usual summer stuff you get at UO.

But yeah, as notatourist said, I was just providing clarification. Cat in the Hat has the same basic style with their couch. MIB has this as well. The base stays flat while the part where guests sit can move in any direction. Once you truly go behind the scenes, you gain a different kind of appreciation for the rides.

Thank you all so much for answering my questions. I was happy to have both your input on the rides!

I am a little nervous about Spiderman still. I haven't gone on Star Tours, because I don't love the whole Sensory motion thing, it does get my head all funky!
I can handle Soarin', but do have to close my eyes on parts of it!!

If I close my eyes on Spiderman, is that enough, or will I still really 'feel' it? Know what I mean?
Because I know my family will love it. But I don't want to come off with a mixed up head and feel yucky for the rest of the day!

Anyone feel that with Spiderman?

If you close your eyes on Spiderman, it will feel like like Dinosaur at AK. You'll still feel the car moving along its path and bumping around, but you won't have the extra sensations provided by the video. But, I believe there are 2 places on the ride where the car spins about 3 times in a row with a speed similar to the tea cups. I would be surprised if that alone would be enough to make any one nautios for the rest of the day though. Just close your eyes and spin your self in an office chair 3 times and see how ya feel before your trip .

Spiderman and motion sickness.....
I get really sick on Star Tours (wouldn't even go near body wars) the Arctic simulator at SW etc. Spiderman doesn't affect me anywhere near as bad. If you do feel sick, instead of closing your eyes, look at something that isn't moving, or that is moving with you.... IE the dash of the scoop, or one of the stationary scenes. Usually something the further away the better, but that isn't always possible.

Also I find it is best to ride simulator rides after eating something very light. Easing on an empty stomach is as bad on me as riding after eating a heavy meal.

A little trick I learn is to pinch the flap of cartilage on the front of your ear that covers the opening to your ear canal. It even works on my mother, who's motion sickness is worse than mine.

Hyland's homeopathic makes an all natural motion sickness pill. It does help me some.

also make certain to stay hydrated, but don't fill up on liquids before riding.


Can you tell I've put a lot of thought into this LOL. I love all types or rides, but they don't love me. If I follow all the above, I can ride anything except tea cups, storm force etc all day long.

After that Arctic ride at SeaWorld, both DH and I felt dizzy and discombobulated afterwards!!

Skifast22--I did Primevial Whirl at AK, so I can handle some spinning.

I will follow all your tips. I think I will wait and do it at the end of the day, in case I do get sick, then the whole day won't be shot!!

Do not chicken out on Spiderman! There really is nothing like it as the 3d images stay in focus as you move. That technology, as well as the effects throughout the ride, put Spiderman in a class by itself.

RE: Motion sickness on Spidey

I usually take a Bonine before we go to the parks. This is good for 24 hours and is not supposed to cause drowsiness as Dramimine (sp) does.

The first time we did Spiderman, I had forgot to take the Bonine. I didn't get too sick, but when my gang wanted to get right back on, I passed and stayed in the store. With FOTL, they were back in no time.

I also find sitting down with a cold Sprite right after the ride helps too.

DO NOT MISS SPIDERMAN!!! I went back another day for a second ride.

Just my opinion but I happen tio think Spiderman is the best ride in all of the parks... Disney included. My kids love this ride. DS4 rode it like 9x and DS 13 is severely handicapped (cp) and he rode it the same amount of times and laughed the whole time. IT ROCKS.. dont miss it, you'll regret it.

I can get sick on many rides, but I don't get sick on Spiderman at all. I wouldn't worry about that. And as mentioned closing your eyes at the end should work. There is only that last part where you feel like you drop that really is the stomach turner IMO if any, and I've closed my eyes at this part to experiment a few times and that seems to really work.

Spidey and the Mummy are absolutely must do rides, they are both in classes by themselves.

Describing the Mummy is very very difficult to do. It is much more than a coaster. Although I think the coaster aspects of it are great, very fast, very smooth, no stomach churning IMO at all. But the animatronics, story and visuals are what make it so great. Very creepy dark ride, probably the "scariest" ride in the world. They really did a good job in mixing a Horror Movie type effect with a ride. This ride was my peoples favorite, that and Spidey. I go back and forth on whether I like Spidey better or the Mummy pretty equal IMO, both terrific.
