I have a question about rides. We are going to WDW for the first time this year, and it will just be DH and myself. I am a scardy cat when it comes to many rides, and also have major social anxiety when seperated from him in crowds. My question is can I accompany him in line ( they can be too long for me to wait at the end) and then wait while he rides. I am assuming there is a place for this like a child swap. We are not looking to cut lines or get extra rides just a way for him to not miss out on SM or ToT.

you can go in line with him and take what is called the chicken exit. you will have to wait for him at exit from there. there is no child swap area as you get the child swap pass, one parent rides, exits and other parent gets in fast pass line and rides. he will not be able to take you to exit and then ride. hope this helps you

Hi there, The staff at Disney are very helpful and there is no problem accompanying your husband in line but choosing not to ride. Just tell the cast-members who are boarding your party that only one of you is riding and they will direct you to the appropriate area where you can wait.

As you have said that you suffer with Social Anxiety it is worth noting that ToT involves using an ordinary elevator to exit from the ride boarding area. The cast members in this area are quite scary looking and remain in character very well, so you may want to talk to a cast member outside the ToT entrance before deciding whether to accompany your husband in line. It is not possible to come back through the pre-show area for ToT - you will be directed to use the ordinary elevator which takes you back to the unloading area.

Most other rides are less complicated and you will not have any issue, it is quite common for parents to accompany their older children in line and then choose not to ride themselves.

I was going to mention that one as well.

The Chicken out elevator is just like an elevator you would ride in an office building.

If you decide to wait outside the ride, its worth noting that the entrance is up a hill from the exit. If you would prefer, when he gets in line you can go down the hill on the right and the gift shop he exits from will be on the left.

It is a bit smaller than some other shops but you can look at the merchandise. My wife and I bought a Tower of Terror CLUE game set there.

Depending on the line wait, it may be sometime before he gets down to you... however, the shop is out of the direct sun light and may be preferable to the standing outside.

Thank you. I will keep the elevator in mind. I will be ok with the cm in character. A crowded elevator may be undoing. My social anxiety is being alone in crowds. Most days if he is beside me I am ok, luckily I have a wonderful husband that is prepared to leave the park if I have to and hang out at the resort.

You would likely be alone in the elevator. I'm sure if someone else were going you could even ask to wait and go alone. ;)

It won't be crowded. When my DS did this (wasn't feeling well) he said it was only him and the CM on it. There is a bench right across form the photo's you can sit on.

I did the alternative exit (I don't like using the term "chicken exit") many times at Twilight Zone (but am cleared to ride again!). I think there was one time where I rode with another person besides the Cast Member to the waiting area. All other times, it was just myself and the Cast Member.

Quite simply, if you need an alternative exit, this is the best one. You will still be in the experience even in the alternative exit. To take your mind off things (if you can), look around and see how detailed things are even "backstage".

I would recommend anyone taking the Twilight Zone alternative exit at least once in their Disney World experiences. I doubt you will regret it.

Thank you all for the good advice. I was very worried I would have to go back the way I came and that was thought I couldn't wrap my head around. I would enjoy being able to walk through ToT with him as I have watched the movie many times with my kids. I know they filmed parts of it in one of the rides but not sure which.

My daughter and the ToT chicken elevator... when my DD was 5 or 6 we took her on ToT.. right before getting on the ride, she changed her mind, there was NO WAY she was going on the drop ride elevator.. so when the CM told us about the chicken out route, and it requiring another elevator to go down, she absolutely freaked out. It did not matter that the chicken elevator was a normal elevator, as far as she was concerned, we were tricking her into riding a dropping elevator, that just looked different.... The Cm was very patient with us, while we explained the chicken elevator would NOT drop. :)
..poor thing.. she rode it the year before, and did ok, so we figured it would be ok on that trip... nope.

I can't ride the ToT because of motion sickness, but I have enjoyed walking with my husband through the paths leading up to the actual getting on the ride then going out through the chicken door. The exhibits and things are defintely worth seeing! :thumbsup2

My husband doesn't like ToT or many of the more extreme roller coasters (Expedition Everest, Rockin' RollerCoaster), so he will walk through the queue with me and then right before boarding, he just lets the cast member know that he isn't going to ride and they direct him to the alternate/"chicken" exit. No problem!

And, you definitely need to walk through the standby queue for Expendition Everest! The yeti museum is awesome! :)
