Richard Jewel

That is the movie I really want to see. Waiting for school to start again as I don't want to go while dd is off on Christmas break.

I can't seem to find it anywhere but the best part of the whole ordeal was Richard Jewell's Saturday Night Live appearance where he punched Janet Reno in the stomach. It aired September 27th 1997. NBC has the clip on their site of his appearance with Norm McDonald for the Weekend Update but does not have the clip from the same episode of him punching Will Ferrell playing Janet Reno.

Richard's story is a cautionary tale that shows why you should NEVER speak with the FBI without an attorney present.

NEVER EVER, NEVER EVER, NEVER EVER.

It does not matter how innocent you are, NEVER EVER, NEVER EVER, NEVER EVER.

I won’t watch a movie that rails against the Media villifying someone while creating a lie about someone else. What happened to Richard is a travesty and what this movie does to the reputation of reporter Kathy Scruggs is also despicable.

We enjoyed the movie. Kathy Bates is always a pleasure to watch. I remember when the bombing happened and Jewell was named a suspect a bit later, after being hailed as a hero. He was just a guy doing his job. I don't think he was an idiot, but even then, I didn't believe he had what it took to pull off that bombing. My real concern was that if he was innocent, yet essentially had his life ruined by being named as a suspect, then what would happen the next time someone (security guard, bystander, anyone) saw something suspicious? Would they report it and risk being seen as a suspect? Or would they keep their mouths shut and cross their fingers nothing was really wrong?

Yeah. This, exactly. The choice to embellish the "based on real events" story in that specific manner crosses a line for me, particularly since it was done with the cynical awareness that Scruggs being dead means that no one has grounds for a slander/defamation suit.

Somewhat off topic, I was in Centennial Park with a friend most of that day and evening. We left to pick up another friend at the airport. We planned to return, but stopped at a sports bar first for some food and beer. Instead of sports, all the TVs had news from the explosion. That was crazy.

A friend and I were also in Centennial Park the day before the bombing. We visited Atlanta just for the day to see some Olympics events, but left the area about 830pm Friday to return to the airport for the flight home. I think the bombing happened about 1am on Saturday. We didn't hear about it until maybe noon on Saturday.

I saw it yesterday and really liked it. I didn't know about the Kathy Scruggs controversy until now.
