Rib pain after influenza?

January 2015 I got the flu and coughed for awhile and had the same rib pain. I went to a walk in clinic in February and was diagnosed with pleurisy. It didn't get better and it would hurt to sneeze, bend, move that side, etc... Finally I went to a pain doctor and we did further testing and I now just have this constant inflammation from the flu and have had to get several nerve blocks. I started them in May 2015 and got my last one end of July and was fine up until a few weeks ago and now I'm getting another one Tuesday. I hope you don't have this luck and yours heals faster. Found this by accident searching for something else, but yes I've been there. Jan 2015 I had the flu for a month or so and about 2 weeks into being sick I guess I coughed too hard in my sleep cause I woke up with terrible rib pain in my right side. It took about 3-4 weeks to heal. It hurt bad but slowly recovered. I just was very careful moving for the most part to avoid the pain and couldn't sleep very well, but it did heal.
I had the same issue this winter with two separate upper respiratory infections that caused coughing so severe that I passed out twice. I aggravated the lowest rib on my right side that it was tender to any touch. Every sneeze was followed by a loud "Owwwww!" from me, and sleeping on my right side or stomach (the two ways I normally sleep) was impossibly painful. The pain eventually resolved a week or two after the coughing subsided.

Oh boy, I'm so sorry. That is sure a long time to deal with this and the pain! I hope your procedure goes well tomorrow and the pain doesn't come back

I brought home a flu from WDW in early March and promptly gave it to my honey, who has the worst immune system in the world. For me it started as a cough, progressed to the aches and pains associated with the flu then I lost my voice. I took one day off work, started on a Sunday, I worked Monday, had the aches and pains and fever on Tuesday so that was the day I took off. Couldn't take off the rest of the time because my co-worker was in and out and someone had to answer the phones. Doing so with no voice was fun, but I managed. By Saturday, I was dog tired and did nothing all day, by Sunday I was fine. Honey on the other hand, had the aches and pains and fever for about 3 days, coughed so hard he did the whole pulled muscle rib pain thing (he is a smoker so I blame that) and is still sore. He took Advil and Mucinex for the cough, whined a lot and got laughed at a lot from me (we are that family that laughs when one of us gets hurts, it actually helps). We have a hot tub and he said that helped a lot as well. It has been about 4 weeks now and if he tries to do too much twisting and turning it still hurts but otherwise he is doing better. My son was a Navy Corpsman and had actually had the same thing when he got sick and dry heaved for 2 days so he assured us it was really a thing and told him what to do. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Sad to read you went to work in the midst of the flu. Has anyone else in your workplace come down with it yet?

Nope, I wasn't running a fever on any of the days I came to work and was very careful to cough in my arm and wash my hands before I touched anything. thankfully I have a very good immune system and when I do get sick, I get over it pretty quick. It's actually the first time I've come home sick from Disney, used to to happen every time I flew on a plane. Once got sick smack dab in the middle of a dive trip to Hawaii. Was up all night throwing up the first night, dove the next day and couldn't eat anything for 3 days. I did take one day off diving, the second day when I had the aches and pains. More often than not I work when I'm sick, only took 2 weeks off when I had my hysterectomy and even then I worked from home.

OK, thanks for explaining. The only time I've had the flu I got it on the plane ride home from Disney, also. There was a boy in front of me coughing the whole ride home.

I hope your husband is back to his usual pain-free self soon too. I have and love a "Bed Buddy" from the pharmacy, it's a hot pack that you microwave and it Velcros around my waist, I can fit it over my ribs on the side, and the heat with ibuprofen really helps loosen things up and eliminate muscle guarding from the surrounding muscles. I have less pain and more range of motion today than I did on Saturday, so things are moving in the right direction now

I had bad bronchitis and had terrible pain in my upper left rib. I was told it was pleurisy. The pain didn't get better for 3ish months. It was terrible.
