RFID Scanners installed around MK

The fact that there's a screen on the unit makes me wonder if they'll do something like what Universal Orlando did shortly after it opened (but which disappeared when they instituted the express pass for purchase or on site).

You would stick your ticket in the machine (just like with fast pass) and you'd have a choice of 2 or 3 return windows. Possibly that's how these will work (with the added possibility of being able to do some reservations in advance).

I absolutely agree with you. And I'm a planner. But I really don't like the idea that EVERY second of my time at my favorite place has to be planned six months in advance.
On top of that, we just went to Great Wolf Lodge a few weeks ago. They have RFID locks on their doors, and it was a HUGE pain in the butt.

And I agree with BOTH of you :thumbsup2!!!! a HUGE pain in the butt. ADR's and which park what day.....what characters I need to find, parade times, firework times..are enough to keep straight. :dance3:

It just annoys me that they're dropping millions of dollars on all this NextGen stuff instead of fixing broken effects and hiring enough custodians to keep the park clean and all the lightbulbs working.

:rotfl2: or dusting things like the baloons in the land pavillion that usrd to go up and down...didn't they?

some more photos with an actual photo of the unit. These things seem to have sprung up very quickly, maybe this is part of tomorrows announcement?

~Wow! Thanks for the update. I was expecting the RFID scanners to look like the ones tested at Epcot last year, these are quite different and far more elaborate! :goodvibes
I just hope this (XPASS) isn't going to be an "elitist" type of service.
~I don't think it will be, at all! The new RFID scanners have a computer screen, which seems to suggest that "basic" xPass will be available to everyone for free! You won't even have to own a computer to use xPass. I'm speculating of course, but I just think it's a system upgrade. :goodvibes

Which one will bring in a revenue stream?

Radio Frequency ID - A chip that contains a unique ID code. Once the ID is programmed into the system it can be used as a ticket, door key, FP redeemer, etc.

We never plan ahead - we just do whatever strikes us at the moment. We're comfortable with that.

Now - I'm going to be "outdated" because I can't decide several months in advance when I want to ride HM?!?! :confused3

For anyone over 60 - the world is moving too fast! Give us time to catch up! Please!!! (We're from the "do it slowly & correctly - then check your work" generation!) :goodvibes

And you would have to pay more for this? If so, that seems crazy! People are scrimping and saving as it is just to get there, but then to have to pay more money to ride rides sooner when the fastpasses were free? I don't know about that.

Actually the recent rumors are leaning toward it being a perk for staying at a Disney resort.

As a card carrying elitist, I personally wouldn't mind if it cost extra.

There is a much bigger picture than this. ;)

Am I the only one who seriously hates this idea? What was wrong with the way things were? I agree with the poster who said Disney needs to spend more money on the actual parks and not on all this new technology. Just my two cents.

Originally I was put off by the idea (when it was first mentioned awhile back), but I think if we wait it out - it may turn out to be something good.
I also don't think we'll have to pay extra for it. I think it will be available to those staying on property.

Can anyone else picture the ones at TSM smoking and blowing up?? LOL!!!

I dont really care for it... These machines would basically replace the CM too wouldnt they? Bracelets drive me CRAZY... I am just going to be the complainer on this one lol.

THIS!!!!

And not for anything, but don't we pay enough for the park tickets??? Why would you want to pay on top of that??? Maybe I don't understand. Would the extra charge be for those who stay off property, like Universal???

Hopefully, it will just be better technology with the same idea as the fast pass as we know it. I guess we have to wait and see instead of guessing how the new system will work.

What I do know is that I won't book rides 6 months out. I want to relax and enjoy my vacation not run like a nut and be miserable!:dance3:

3happydancers: As a non-planner who has heartburn about making ADRs I am not going to get upset about what this may or may not be. I do not create an iteniarary, we just wing it (minus a few ADRs - that's all we can handle). However, we will go with the flow and accept that technology will improve over the years and hopefully for the better. If not, we can choose not to use it. I wouldn't let it get you to upset. Disney needs to understand there are the commandos and the "I need to just go with the flow" crowds.

As for the cleanliness of the parks. Until mankind actually becomes decent, I don't care how many staff you have tiding up you will not be able to keep up with it all. Disney cannot afford to have a housekeeper/janitor following each guest therefore guests will stumble upon messes. Disney will staff for a percentage of "preventative maintenance" and "corrective maintenance" (things they cannot plan for - based on a percentage.) If the corrective maintenance supersees the preventative, yes things are going to get left behind if the finances do not support out sourcing or overtime. In other words....I'm sure someone in Disney is bothered that they didn't get to dust the top of the balloons at the Four Seasons. It was unfortunately post-poned due to budgetary reasoning.

I will accept Disney with it's flaws as long as they are reasonable and willing to work with me and others (when reasonable).

And, no one had figured this is a way of tracking your rides/activities?

The range on a passive RFID of the size they will be using is very short, as in inches. Unless you have to put the RFID up to a scanner everywhere you go there is no way to actually track you.

Disney is not going to spend the large amount of money they are for this (and it is large) without some type of return. Whether they charge extra, make it a perk for deluxe resorts or tier it by onsite resort, it will be extra money in their pockets. Simply done for the guest convenience isn't going to bring in the additional business to pay for it IMO.

The same reason they won't fix the Yeti on EE. Why shutdown a ride and pay to repair an attraction that brings people to the AK when plenty of people come there and ride EE the way it is.
