Review of the Plaza restaurant

I had the day after the Fourth of July off from work and school, and I started to get that itch to run down to Disney. I convinced Mike, and he surprised me by coming home early from work that day (well, not of his own doing – the boss let them go). I was ready to go in five minutes, and we were out the door.

After our day of heavy eating the day before at the Whispering Canyon Café and the Kona Café, Mike wanted something light. I suggested the Plaza restaurant at the Magic Kingdom because of the sandwiches and inexpensive prices. Mike agreed, and before we got there, I dragged him off to the Emporium to buy a Minnie bridal headband for me, and a sorcerer’s hat for Mike (he likes to play wizards in video games…and the groom’s top hat doesn’t fit him). Ever since we’ve been coming to Disney, I’ve been bugging Mike about when I’d get to wear my wedding ears. Today was finally the day! I planned on wearing them that day, and then putting them away. But at least I owned a pair, at last.

I had made a priority seating for the Plaza on the way there, because we noticed that in the past we’d never been able to walk up for dinner. We easily made a priority seating for the time we wanted, 6:30 PM, and got there about 15 minutes early. We didn’t mention our engagement, but the host noticed our ears, and asked if we were newlyweds. We said that we got engaged last night, and he wanted to know the story! Mike told him how he proposed, and he thought it was a sweet story. When we were called about 5-10 minutes later, we were surprised by Mickey confetti on our table! I was happy already from the day before, but after this I was beaming. Our server, Ashley, congratulated us, said that she wished us a happy life together, and took a picture of us together.

I ordered an iced tea and Mike…well, guess! ($2.00 each) I had looked over the menu already, and the chicken strawberry salad had been recommended to me. We decided to share the salad ($8.99) and the chicken sandwich ($10.49). The soups of the day were tomato bisque and chicken noodle, and a bowl of chicken noodle soup sounded right up my alley that night ($3.49). Ashley brought the chicken noodle soup out, with crackers. Surprisingly enough, the soup was wonderful! It was a small cup, but it was some of the best chicken noodle soup I’ve had. When we go again, I’ll definitely choose it again.

With the chicken sandwich, we ordered the potato salad, because we’re not big fans of Disney fries. We were pleasantly surprised when the plate came, as it was a warm salad of sliced red potatoes with a vinegary dressing and cracked black pepper. Much better than French fries! We’ve come to realize that at Disney, potato salad usually isn’t the creamy, mayonnaise based salad that we’re used to. As for the chicken sandwich itself, it was wonderful as well. It was a large, seasoned breast of chicken with sliced ham and melted provolone cheese on a thick Kaiser roll. With the sandwich came a plate of condiments, tiny bottles of ketchup, mayonnaise, and Dijon mustard – what a nice touch! The salad, unfortunately, was a little bit of a disappointment. Mike didn’t like it because of the Gorgonzola cheese, so I ended up having most of it, while I had to give up that delicious sandwich. There was only about 2-3 strawberries total, a small amount of chicken, and enough dressing for two salads. I would ask for the dressing on the side, with this salad, with how much was on it. It was mostly iceberg lettuce with a bit of mixed greens, as a base. It was a good salad, but not great. Also, I noticed a table behind us ordered the salad, and received a much more attractive salad with large croutons. I wondered why there was such a huge difference between the appearance of our salads. The salad is very light, however, and would be good for a light meal for either lunch or dinner.

I had heard so many good things about the desserts there that we had to share a sundae. For once, Mike actually made a decision, and picked the Plaza Restaurant Special ($4.49), which came with butter pecan ice cream, caramel and fudge sauce, whipped cream, and a cherry. Except – oops – I didn’t realize that it came with both sauces, and I asked for a caramel, and I think that Ashley thought I meant just caramel sauce. Oh well. The sundae itself was fantastic – the ice cream tasted as if it were praline ice cream, it was so rich and flavorful. The caramel sauce was delicious as well!

When we were through, Ashley came by with our bill, on which she had written in Chinese (she was from China originally) a wish for a long, happy, magical life together. What a touching gesture! It was so kind of her that I was about ready to cry. Also, we had been given the ice cream and the soup complimentary, even though we didn’t make a big deal out of our “event.” I didn’t expect any of it, and it was so nice of them. I didn’t realize how special Cast Members made events like that. Service was just wonderful during the whole meal. Ashley was a great server and made us feel so welcome.

The Plaza restaurant was a great place for a light lunch or dinner at the Magic Kingdom. As I said before, we haven’t been able to just walk up for dinner, so I would recommend making a priority seating if you want to eat dinner there. Lunch may be easier to get into, unless it’s a holiday. We plan to return, because there are plenty of other menu choices that we’d like to try, and it’s always nice to have a light meal during the hot months here in Florida.

That potato salad at the Plaza is German Potato Salad. It's so yummy there! I love it.

Can't wait to go back.

Yep, we know :) Have you had the one at Le Cellier at lunch time? It's even better than at the Plaza!

The Plaza's become one of my favorites. Food is good, not as pricey as some places, attractive setting, and of course the ice cream! :D

OK Kathleen...where is the picture of you in your headband?? huh huh huh???:o

All right, all right, I'll get it up after I finish cooking dinner. :p It's not the most flattering picture, that's why I didn't put it up.

LOL we will be the judge of that! ;)

All right, all right, there you go.

Ears

I just hate the double chin thing that happens when I lean back with my chin down. I'm "fluffy," but no double chin outside of pictures. :p

What a cute picture, we are our own worst critic I think!!

I think you look great!

What wonderful reviews! We decided to eat at the Plaza on stormy evening last July as we were waiting to see if E-night was canceled and found a new favorite. I have been dreaming of the German potato salad for weeks and can't wait to eat there in a week.

Congrats on the engagement!
