The first late Magic hour was at Epcot.
We stayed at the Swan and we particpated in the first Late magic hours test. If the other test nights go as that one did I doubt they would continue them, because almost no one knew about it I guess and the number of people actually going on the few things open was miniscule. It did stay crowded in Future world and I sawy many, many, many people without wrist bands on rides after 7 when FW normally closes and before Illuminations.
After Illuminations the park emptied out to the remaining few with wrist bands. At that point there would be empty rides or two or three people on them at a time. ALSO while it did state that only Malestrom and the River of time ride in Mexico would be open it was not clear that the rest of the WS would be roped off and closed so you could not go to the other pavillions till Midnight nor even stroll all the way around the lagoon. That was a disappointment.
I am assuming that since it was the first night hardly anyone knew about it. I did not see much publicity at all about it and I actually had to ask for an info sheet on it at my hotel nothing was said about it nor was info sheet provided till I asked.

I don't know how much was said at actual Disney properties, as I said I was at the Swan, [about which I must say I was impressed with the hotel immensely, it was my first stay there]

I am personally all for the idea but they need a little more open and they need to make sure guests know about the plan.
Also in general, [not for Late night hour] they need to hire a lot more CMs, which I know they are trying to do now. but it is a little late to hire and train as crowds increase.
AND
It was indeed sad to see the state of the Future world Pavillions, many of which have lost their sponsors, don't know what is going to happen to them. the Land ride, [one of my favorites] was dirty and shabby looking in the greenhouse areas, Living seas was a shadow of its former self, very few fish too. the ride vehicles, in Spaceship Earth really need to be replaced along with the track I assume and I know they don't want to do that since they wanted to replace it with a thrill ride or some such thing and could not evidently.

PERSONAL NOTE:
if they continue as they are in doing away with classic rides, changing entertainment, doing away with animation dept. etc. they might as well shut the doors of the place or change the name because it is no longer the Disney that became an ICON and made the industry, and I will no longer spend my money to go there, If I wanted an amusement park full of thrill rides, Six Flags is a couple hours from here, why fly to Florida and spend thousands on extras for that? No it was the Disney feeling the charm and innocence and wonder and they are slowly choking it out of the parks completely. It is not too late to turn it around but I don't think there is a desire in management to do that. They won't know what they had till it's gone.

we wondered how they would do late magic hour without having lots of people there that shouldnt be.

thanks for your report!

hope you had a great trip despite.

Aren't many of the rides in FW still open until Illuminations for the public, such as TT and MS?

Yes Angey77 Test Track, Mission Space and Space Ship Earth are all open until park closing for ALL guests. So wristbands would not be needed until the official park closing time of 9pm.

Mccall,

Thanks for the review. I agree that it was probably a lot less crowded that night because people didn't know about it. I remember when e-ticket nights used to be like that...

I hope they keep this program around for our June trip. We are traveling with our sons band and they have several morning activities that would make it impossible to use the morning EMHs.

McCall,

Thanks for your input about the EMH at Epcot. I am also glad to hear about the Swan. We check in on Friday for seven nights and we have never stayed there before.

I also share your opinion about keeping the classic rides. I do like the combination and have some thrill rides. If they ever completely closed Carousel of Progress I will be devastated as this is my favorite classic.

We're leaving tomorrow and the first MK EMH at night is tomorrow. I suspect because of the travel, my girls will poop out long before 9pm but we're going to give it a shot.

We never got a postcard so I assume most guest won't have a clue until they get there and from the OP it doesn't seem like they are advertising it much in the resort.

Should be interesting!:)

It sounds like Disney Resort Management, PR & Marketing dropped the ball very badly on informing guest of the changes.

I wonder why?

I read on wdwmagic.com that thousands of guests showed up @ MK for morning EMH and did not know of the changes.

YOU HAD TO ASK FOR A INFO SHEET! Gee, how about that!

MKMom - You never recieved a post card?

Any one remember my post - "I Smell a Rat"?.............

Is it possible that Disney wants this test to fail?

PS - Zipping up my Flame Retardent Suit!

OLT2004 - No flame, but I do have a question. I missed your thread about "smelling a rat" so please clue me in on the gossip. Why would Disney want it to fail? If so, why do it in the first place. I just don't understand the motive - what's the secondary gain? Please fill me in.

Double Admission for a single day worth of fun.

Similar to ETicket Nights but done 7 nights a week.

Parks would close early but for $12 extra.........

I could imagine Disney turning round at the end of the test and saying 'Its just not worth doing - look at the poor attendance. Our guests have told us loud and clear that they don't want or need extra magic hours'.

For Disney, evening Extra Magic Hours is an expensive proposition with all the extra staff (who no doubt will get paid top $ for working so late) and the costs of keeping the rides up and running. I would also imagine profits from food would go down as most people would have eaten their evening meal by 10. And ultimately the system they are testing = the parks being open far longer than under the traditional early morning extra hour. Unlike E-ride nights they don't make any extra $ from them.

Still, this is the cynical view! If the feature draws more guests to the Disney resorts it may well be profitable.

McCall ~ that is so sad to hear about the conditions you encountered. We don't go to Disney for thrill rides, either. If we want that we can easily go to Great Adventure (which we have never been to!). You said it so well - "the charm and innocence and wonder". Please consider sending your post just as you wrote it to Disney management.

Glad you enjoyed the Swan - we are staying there, too.

My thought on the Extra Magic Hour was that it was a marketing ploy to try and fill up the hotels during the slow time from the end of spring break till the summer crowds start coming in before Memorial day. Every single disney resort had availability during this time. I guess the public didn't bite. Just looking at it from a different angle.

I was there too! I really wanted to stay until the end, but my sister pooped out on me about 10:45. Before we left, I dropped in that last shop at International Gateway, my sister waited outside on a bench and when I came back out, she was being interviewed by a CM about how she liked the extra evening hours, was she happy with the number of attractions available, number of concessions open, did we shop during that time, how many rides did we get on, ect. I wish they would have interviewed me! The CM said Disney would be calling my sister with more questions. I'm looking forward to hearing what they say when they call. We stayed at the Dolphin and didn't get any information, before we arrived or at check in, but of course I knew about it thanks to the DIS. I was also disappointed that all of WS wasn't open. They were checking wristbands before getting on the rides that we did.

It probably wasn't very busy because it was the first night.
Fliers, signs, and announcements were made for resort guests.
Future World was indeed open until 9 to the general public that night because of the test.
WDW is far from being only thrill rides, and only a handfull of older attractions have been replaced by thrill rides.

If the intent of the test was to ultimately not do any EMH at night, there would never have been a test.

The hope is that offering this new opportunity (there is much more offered in the evenings than at night) will be a compelling reason to stay on-property, and that increased time spent at all 4 parks will offset any loss in revenue incurred by doing away with the extra charge for E-ride at MK only. Some may find it shocking, but there are thousands upon thousands of people working at WDW who want their guests to be happy, and there is no conspiracy to tick you off.

Speaking from personal experience having to close and clear sections of a park after hours, keeping World Showcase open "just to walk around" would be a logistical nightmare, and would not be fair to the security and operations CMs who close the park each night.

I hate when this happens!
I just sent a perfectly composed, well thought out and brillant reply - I hit send - AND I TIMED OUT!!!!!!!!

#%##%@&#!!!!!!!

Send me an Email and I will try to recreate my reply!

It sounds like Disney is finally getting it together with the change in EMH. They should have sent out something to all guests that were booked at one of their hotels. I guess that would have been costly! Glad to hear they are making an effort.

Why in the world would Disney go to the expense of marketing this big change, paying employees to stay in the parks late, keeping transportation going, because they WANT it to fail? Why not just not do it? Nobody imagined such a thing before they announced it, so it's not like people were banging on their doors to do something they don't want to do.

Of course it's a marketing ploy to get people to stay on-site. That's what EMH, EE, and E-ride nights have ALWAYS been. It's not any deep, dark secret. Much to some people's annoyance, Disney is, in fact, a business, not a public service.

Evening EMH seems to me like the best idea Disney has come up with in an awfully long time. I hate Eisner as much as the next guy, but let's give Disney credit where it's due.
