Review of ABC Commissary

A little while ago I got the idea to start looking at “controversial” restaurants – ones that get a lot of bad reviews, but some very good reviews as well. Since we were going to MGM for the day, I decided to try the ABC Commissary. This was another place that we wanted to try the kid’s menu. We were going to Hollywood and Vine for dinner that night, so sharing the kid’s meal and an adult meal was going to work better than two adult meals. We walked in, looked at the menu, and Mike went off to get a seat while I waited in line. The entry way is brightly lit with palm trees lining the way to the cashier area.

I decided on the Cuban sandwich ($6.49) and Mike wanted the kid’s fish and chips ($3.49). When I got to the front of the line, I asked if anything could be substituted besides potato chips, and they told me that French fries could be, which I settled for. I also ordered a large diet Coke with no ice ($2.29), and an iced tea with the kid’s meal. Even though it was lunch time, the food was brought to the front quickly.

I stopped at the condiment stand on the way to find Mike. The station was stocked very well; this was probably the best thing that the restaurant had going for it. It included the usual napkins and plasticware, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup in large pumps, relish, tartar sauce, barbecue sauce, and malt vinegar, among other things. I found Mike, and we sat down. I finally noticed – it’s an EXPLOSION of ABC inside. It’s just crazy. It’s as if you walked into a commercial – there are posters all over the walls, stand-up cardboard cutouts of TV characters, and commercials for TV shows playing on TVs all over the place. The food was average – the fries were standard Disney fries, the Cuban sandwich was at least pressed, even though it didn’t come with mustard on it (it had ham, pork, Swiss cheese, and pickles), and the kid’s fish and chips came with one small piece of fish.

We ended up eating as quickly as we could to get away from the commercials. I had noticed other people ordering the noodle bowl ($5.99), which originally sounded good, but after seeing it I was glad I hadn’t ordered it. It was a small plate of noodles with some vegetables in a brown sauce on top. The menu at first sounds varied and interesting, but didn’t really end up being so. I wish there were more healthy choices, and the option for carrots instead of fries. Service was ok at the counter, except I noticed one food preparer sliding a bowl of rice across the counter so hard that it hit the tray it was destined for, and some of it spilled out onto the counter and tray. Thankfully the Cast Member with the tray scolded the food preparer, and got a fresh bowl and tray.

While the food was decent, I will not go back here again. MGM doesn’t have much variety in the way of counter service, but anything there is better than this. The atmosphere was just horrible, loud, and commercialized.

we had breakfast there one morning and it was pretty good. It is one big ABC commercial though.

We like to have breakfast there. We've never tried lunch - we probably won't now. But, we will definitely go back for breakfast! Thanks for the review!

Thanks for the review. It's a good thing we love having lunch at Sci Fi so much - for us, lunch is usually counter service at the other parks, but there just doesn't seem to be a good counter service choice at MGM. That's okay though, we'll be more than happy to have all our MGM lunches at Sci Fi!

My father ordered the Feijoada dish, and it was the most abysmal item he has ever had in a restaurant, taste, smell, and general appearance. We all lost our appetite watching him try to eat it. :crazy2:

Have they changed the menu at ABC? Last time we ate there, it was quaisi-Asian food.

ABC was the worst meal of our trip last week AND my worst food at Disney ever. We had breakfast there on Friday. My pancakes were hard to cut with a KNIFE and my DH's biscuit could have busted a window. The pancakes had an amazing soaking property--they took two packs of syrup and were still dry. The great minds of science should investigate that phenomenon--perhaps it can be used for good. We made fun of ABC all day.

They had one dish that could be called ... Asian inspired, maybe? It's the noodle bowl that I mentioned, with stir fried vegetables.

Gariig - welcome to the DIS!!! :Pinkbounc

Thanks for adding your 2 cents to the review! We'll look forward to hearing more from you soon! ::yes::

the cuban sandwich didnt have mustard because it was a cuban sandwich they dont have mustard on them thats like putting ketchup in a pastrame sandwich oh well.

ABC Commissary is our favorite CS location, ANYWHERE at WDW. The curry is the best single item on any CS menu.

For many years, the ABC Commissary was one of our favorite counter service meals at MGM Studios. We ate there in June, 2005 and the food was horrible. Fish was greasy and fatty. The chicken nuggets were hard as a rock. In June, 2006, we tried it again because we thought maybe they were just having a bad day when we ate there in 2005. Nope! It was bad that time too.

I could stand all of the ABC commercials if only the food was good.
