We just got back tonight and I'm still too wired to sleep, so I figured I may as well get a start on my trip report.

Background, the condensed version:

My mom & I planned this trip as a birthday surprise for DD, who turned 6 Wednesday. It was just a short trip - 3 nights at the Beach Club on the DDP, with tickets to the Pirate & Princess Party on the 21st and one day park tickets. The cast is: DM, 60 and loving taking the kids to Disney because she couldn't take my brother & I when we were young. Me, 28, travel and internet addict and master planner. And the kids, DS9, big on thrill rides and swimming pools and DD6, the birthday girl, obsessed with all things Princesses.

My full, but short, pre-trippie is here - A Birthday With the Mouse.

Up next: The greatest pool in the world!!

I can't wait to hear how the surprise went! It sounds like a wonderful whirl wind trip.

I'd love to say I had some sort of clever reveal planned, but really I didn't. I ended up telling DS a few days before we left because he was upset about missing something here at home (his younger half-brother is in foster care, and DS has been going with his father to visits). He was great about helping to keep the secret, and DD had no idea where we were going even when we left for the airport.

Because I wanted to leave my van home, DH drove us to meet DM at her office. From there it was off to the airport, and DD didn't have a clue where we were going. She didn't seem all that curious either - flying is still amusing enough that she wasn't really thinking about what we'd be doing when we landed. :rotfl:

We got to Orlando and checked in at the ME counter before DD started thinking about where we were going. I gave her a birthday gift I'd packed - a tin Princesses lunchbox containing the autograph book I made her, a fat Belle pen, and my plan cards. Finally she figured it out! :thumbsup2

Her autograph book:

My plan cards, which I printed, cut, and fastened with brads to make a little notebook:

We arrived at the Beach Club about 1 hour and 20 minutes after landing at MCO. We were the last stop after the Carribean Beach and Yacht Club resorts. The kids immediately loved the lobby, and I took a few pictures while my mom checked in. Art the greeter wasn't there when we checked in, but the greeter on duty gave Shanna a birthday button and was the first of many to wish her a Happy Birthday.

The birthday girl, sporting her button:

Our room was ready when we checked in. I figured it should be, since we didn't land until 2 and got to the resort around 3:30. I snapped a couple quick pictures of the room before we spread out, but then it was off to check out the pool! We were in room 4548 on the 4th floor near the quiet pool, facing Epcot. You can't really see it in the pictures, but we could just see the top of Spaceship Earth through the trees from our balcony, especially at night when it was all lit up. We had 2 doubles (I think? maybe queens) with a daybed and a full balcony. It was a bit of a walk to the lobby & restaurants, but we never minded and the room was nice and quiet.

Up next: I finally get to the pool. Honest. I promise.

We stayed in the room just long enough to throw on our swimsuits and head right back out the door. DM had a headache, so she stayed behind to nap while I herded the kids out the door to check out Stormalong Bay.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect of SAB. I've been reading raves about it since I first started planning Disney trips way back in May of '05, and I was a little worried it might not live up to the hype. Boy was I wrong! SAB is without a doubt the most fabulous outdoor pool complex I have ever seen (I have to include the "outdoor" qualifier because we've stayed at some fabulous indoor waterpark resorts in the past).

Some pics from that first afternoon -

The view across the lake

Our first look at the big slide

The whirlpool and slide landing

A birds-eye view

DS enjoying the sand bar at the kiddie pool

The kids enjoying the whirlpool

Another view of the slide

I was a little worried about how DD would be in the pool, because she's just a tiny little thing and she's not a strong swimmer yet, but I needn't have worried. Between the very nice, shallow kiddie pool with the sand bar and beach and the lifejackets available from the pool gift shop, she was just fine. In fact, she liked the lifejacket so well that she preferred it over a tube in the lazy river, and she spent a lot of time practicing her swimming with her vest on.

DS is a very good swimmer and pretty much fearless, so once we laid some basic ground rules - no lazy river pool without mom! - he was more than happy to splash around between the whirlpool, slide, and hot tub. I really liked the fact that SAB is actually 3 seperate pools, because I could tell DS to stay in the pool that stretches from the slide landing to the hot tubs and includes the whirlpool and not worry about him accidentally wandering into the 8ft deep lazy river.

They were checking room keys when we got to the pool and passing out wristbands. This was the only time we encountered this, but I suppose that doing it randomly is probably deterrant enough. There was one other day where we needed to show our room keys to get towels, which struck me as kind of funny because doing without a towel on a 95* Florida afternoon hardly seems uncomfortable enough to be any sort of consequence for potential pool-hoppers.

We hung out at the pool until about 5:45, when the kids started getting hungry. On arriving back in the room, we found our bags had already arrived. My mom said they got there around 5, almost exactly 3 hours after we landed at MCO. Once we were all dry and changed, we hung our suits on the balcony rail to dry and headed down the Boardwalk for dinner. I hadn't made ADRs for this night because I wanted the kids to be able to enjoy the pool without getting dragged away for dinner before they were ready, so we headed down to the ESPN Club.

I took this shot because I'm an Earnhardt fan. :rotfl:

The Boardwalk:

I have a full dinner review on my dining report (link is in my sig), so I'll just say that we really enjoyed the ESPN Club and will definately be back on the next trip.

After dinner, we walked down the Boardwalk and did a little shopping. The kids and I stopped to watch a sword swallower while DM checked out the shops. The boat just happened to be pulling up to the dock when we were ready to head back to the BC, so we hopped aboard rather than walking back.

We spent the rest of the evening in the pool, which didn't close until 11:30 during our trip. DM, who isn't much of a swimmer, found a chair on the beach to watch Toy Story at 9, and then hung out with a drink and a book while the kids and I swam. It was midnight before we got back to the room, and we all fell asleep to the classic Disney cartoons on channel 96 - just another bit of Disney magic I never would have known about if not for the DISboards. :cloud9:

We had originally planned to have only 1 park day plus the P&PP, and only visit Magic Kingdom on this trip. DH & I are planning a longer trip for January, so we didn't feel any pressure to do it all, and DM just isn't a fan of Florida summers. But the weather was better than we expected, in the low-mid 90s and not as oppressively humid as our Oct '05 trip had been, so we decided to fit in a morning at Epcot so that DM could catch the Behind the Seeds tour and the remodelled Seas pavilion, which was closed for the Nemo retheming when we were there last.

We walked over to Epcot, added the day to our tickets, and we were off. Well, sort of. We didn't even get to the gates before the kids started complaining they were hungry. Now this was entirely my fault - we slept until 11 and headed out almost as soon as we were conscious, so they hadn't had a snack or anything. It worked out well, however. The World Showcase was empty when we got to the park, and in our first 10 minutes, we managed to meet 2 characters, get lunch, find a shady bench and fight off an overly friendly duck.

As soon as we came through the International Gateway entrance, we ran into Minnie Mouse and the Queen of Hearts and DD's autograph collection was off to a great start. The best part here, and with all the characters we met around the World Showcase, was that there were no lines. None. We walked right up to Minnie and there wasn't even anyone else around, and that ended up being the trend for the whole morning.

While DD was meeting characters, DS & DM went shopping, and we had the first of many packages shipped over to the BC. The shopping and signings done, we decided to let the kids get a special treat - McDonald's nuggets. Since I don't eat McD's, the kids really do think of those greasy, chicken-like patties as a rare treat. We hit the Refreshment Port in Canada for 2 meals, which ended up being enough food for the 4 of us to share. From there, we headed back around the World Showcase to see who we could meet. DD especially wanted to meet the Beast, so we were off to France.

In a garden just the other side of the IG bridge, we met Aurora with no wait at all.

Again I was amazed at the lack of people. I got some great shots that I've never been able to get before, because there are usually too many people walking to get something like these

I especially love this one, because I was able to frame it so that the arch hides the crane that is still beside SSE.

While we walked around, we also ran into Jasmine and Belle with the Beast, again with no or very short lines.

After we made our way around World Showcase, we got down to doing what we came for. We headed over to the Land, signed up for a Behind the Seeds tour time and then hit the new Nemo ride. The line was about 20 minutes, so we just had time to do that and then go back for our tour.

This whole afternoon is a little bit of a blur for me, because somewhere around Mexico, I started getting a bad headache and I spent a lot of the afternoon with my eyes closed, just enjoying the air conditioning. I was stupid and left my meds back in the room, but I thought I could tough it out. So if I'm a bit critical or apathtic about things we did at Epcot, its because it is all filtered through the haze of a particularly bad migraine.

Nemo wasn't as cool as I remember the old ride being, but I do want to go on it again because there are things the kids have talked about that I didn't even notice. The aquariums in the Seas are still awesome, though, and I loved watching the manatees.

The Behind the Seeds tour was great, even though it was hot (hotter than outside!) and I was miserable by this point. Still, I loved getting an up-close look at some of their growing set ups, because DH has promised recreations of certain aspects in my own gardens. I'm a somewhat obsessive gardener, so it was the greenhouse part of the tour that I was really into! The kids loved seeing the shrimp (and DS loved having those giant shrimp for dinner later! :rotfl: ) and feeding the fish, and of course releasing the ladybugs into the greenhouse at the end.

At this point, we were already running late for our ADR at Kona, but I called the restaurant directly (I hd the numbers on my plan cards for just such an occasion) and they said it shouldn't be a problem to fit us in later, so we decided to catch Turtle Talk before leaving. This show was really cute. The kids just loved that Crush talked to them, and I was glad we made the time for it.

Future World was starting to get pretty crowded by the time we left Epcot around 6, and I was glad to be leaving. I was hot & feeling really icky, and a nice cool monorail ride followed by a nice dinner and a cooler evening at the Magic Kingdom.

The Poly was absolutely beautiful, but I was in no mood to appreciate it and regrettably I didn't get any pics. :sad1: What I did appreciate were some overpriced Tylenol from the gift shop while we were waiting for our table, and the icy cold tea from the lounge. DM had a passion fruit mai-tai which was amazing - passion fruit is one of my favorite flavors, and I would have ordered one myself had I been feeling better. An hour or so in the air conditioning, with the lovely music from the guitarist in the lounge and a nice meal at Kona and I was feeling much better by the time we left for the Pirate & Princess Party, much to my relief.

Up next: Pirates, Princesses, and Pictures with Captain Jack

Well crud. I typed a big long post about the P&PP, and it seems to have vanished into cyberspace. :sad2: Oh well, I'll make sure to post the next installment tomorrow, because I'm not starting over tonight!

tomorrow was a couple of days ago??? No pressure. I'm just sayin'.:surfweb:

Well, I'm back. Not feeling very Disney at the moment, but I'm hoping reliving our trip will bring a much needed smile. My grandmother was hospitalized on the kids' second day of school, just as the back-to-school rush was settling down and thinking I could enjoy the peace of being home without the kids all day for the first time ever. So I've spent the last week (God, it seems like longer than that!) helping my mom make decisions about feeding tubes and trying to get my grandmother's house a little closer to sale-ready. :sad1:

I wish our next Disney trip wasn't so far away...

But the next best thing is thinking about our last trip. :goodvibes

So, where did I leave off? Oh yeah - The Pirate & Princess Party!

A sidenote: Forgive the quality of the night shots. I was shooting in my camera's no-flash night mode for most of the evening, but haven't had a chance to run them through Photoshop to smooth the grainy look that I get when I'm shooting with that setting.

I was actually sort of reluctant to get tickets to the party, because we went to MNSSHP in '05 and it was PACKED. Much more crowded than the parks were during the day on that trip. So between the heat and the crowds, we didn't get to do much, and I wasn't especially impressed with the experience. But the favorable reports combined with the fact that I know a little better how to avoid crowds now - that MNSSHP was on a Friday, no wonder it was crowded! - made me decide to give it a shot.

We got to the party around 8, so I wasn't surprised that there were no lines at the gate. The red carpets as you go under the train station were a nice touch.

When we got to the grassy area there at the foot of Main Street, I was simply floored. I snapped this picture with no thought to framing or composition, and DS wandered into the frame at the last second, but it gives a good idea of just how empty the park was:

And of course, the castle:

Let me tell you, there is no better cure for a migraine than walking onto Main Street and seeing that castle, and the grins on the kids' faces because this is the moment when it really sinks in that we're at Disney World, and reality and stress and worries are all a thousand miles away. :goodvibes

The crowds were lighter than I'd ever seen them, and we had a great time. We headed for Adventureland and PotC first thing. The pirate tutorial was just starting when we got there, so we stayed for the show. All I have to say is Capt Jack.... Great casting!

We rode the Magic Carpets twice - why not? They were a walk on! - and PotC. We were the only ones in our boat on PotC! I simply couldn't believe how empty the park was. It was nothing short of fabulous, and I'm hoping hoping hoping they'll bring the parties back again for January, just in time for DS's birthday trip.

We have ridden PotC since the rehab that added the movie tie-ins, and I was really impressed by the Davy Jones effect at the beginning.

We had a great time looking for Capt Jack, and the AA figures of him really were very lifelike.

The one at the end:

By this time, it was close to fireworks time and we headed back towards Main Street for to watch the show from near Crystal Palace. Unfortunately, I'd forgotten DD's earplugs, and the noise really bothered her. This worked out okay, though, because even though I missed most of the fireworks, we headed over to Capt Jack and got to meet him with only a 15 minute wait.

This Jack wasn't as good a likeness, but boy did he have the mannerisms down. As we were leaving, the girl behind us said to him "All my friends love you", and without missing a beat he came back with "What a coincidence. I love me too!" :rotfl:

After meeting Jack, we headed back to Frontierland. We ran into Jasmine on the way, and true to her word she remembered DD from Epcot, which just made DD's night! :cloud9: Of course we had to ride the carpets again since there was no line. By the time we made it to Frontierland, the late parade was just getting ready to start, so we found ourselves a spot and watched the show. This was another of my moments, where I realized how low the crowds really were - we got there less than 5 minutes before the parade started, and we could see! :thumbsup2

Once the parade passed, we hit a couple more treasure spots on our way to Splash Mountain. Splash is DS's favorite ride, and I love it too, but my mom & DD don't ride the big rides, so just the two of us headed off while DM & DD found a bench and set to snacking on some of their treasures. Like everything else all night, Splash was a walk on, so we rode twice. :yay: I was really glad to have those few moments with DS, because he tends to bring up the most interesting things at moments like that - he hadn't seemed to be having fun that morning at Epcot, but at the top of Splash Mountain, waiting to go crashing down into the water, he was willing to tell me why (he had to miss a visit with his little half-brother to come on the trip, and even though he was having a great time, he was bummed about that). He's such a sweet, sensitive kid and he tends to keep a lot of things bottled up, so moments like that are very precious with him.

As always, I thought about how much I want a watertight case for my camera. I love the view from the top of Splash Mountain, and it is even better at night! Before the next trip, I'm going to have to get the case I've been eyeing, so I can get a pic of that view next time.

From Frontierland, we headed towards Fantasyland, hitting a few last treasure spots along the way. DD saw Cinderella's coach and had to have her picture taken with it

We also ran into Hook & Smee near the Libery Belle dock, and even DS got in on the fun with them.

At this point, it was getting close to closing time, but I was the only one getting tired, probably because the Tylenol was wearing off. I rode Cinderella's Carrousel with DD and even that little bit of spinning was too much, so I sat out when she headed for Dumbo. She made it onto the last ride of the night at Dumbo, and then we headed out to the bus stop. Some of the treasure stops were still open, and at one, the CM gave the kids all the beads she had left (about a half-dozen per kid). Another CM noticed DD's birthday button and gave her about 10 sheets of the princess tattoos they were handing out. DD is still giving those to her friends! Every little girl in the neighborhood was sporting a princess tattoo on the first day of school! :rotfl:

Next up: Magic Kingdom in the light of day, and a birthday dinner with Cinderella and her Prince

Sorry to hear about your grandmother.:sad2: But the trip bit was lovely. how lucky that the park was so empty.:yay: Totally worth the price of tickets!!!
