Returning rental car

We are going on our cruise next month and are planning on renting a car to drive to the port. I’ve read on here that it’s easiest for my husband to drop me and the kids off at the port along with the luggage while he returns the car. By doing this though, I guess I’m curious as to where we can wait for him so we can all get checked in together? Do we have to wait outside for him or it is like an airport where we can get into the terminal but only get so far without checking in? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, first cruise we’ve ever done!

You can get into the terminal no problem without your full party present. You go through security/bag check and then there is a big open atrium by the checkin area.
