Return rental car one day early?

I booked a car rental for 6 days (not a weekly rate), but I changed my plans and am returning a day earlier. I know that there has been mention of rate changes if you booked a weekly rate and returned the car early, but what if it wasn't a weekly rate? I booked this a while ago, and of course when I try to rebook with only 5 days, the price is much more. Has anyone ever returned a rental a day early? If so, were you charged the original total or did they decrease your total by one day, or were you charged an entirely different rate? Thanks

It depends on the rental car company. I've read messages saying that Alamo charges folks more for returning a car early. I haven't read any messages about any other companies doing that.

The contract is written such that if you return the car earlier then YOU said they can change the rate. I would book with the correct dates (espcially with Alamo who is very likely to want to "upgrade" your rate)
