Returing hire car to airport

We used the Downtown Disney check-in for the first time in July and thought it was great, but still ended up getting to the airport around 4pm for our 8.10pm flight because we were worried that we might be charged an extra day for car hire.

Has anyone got any experience of returning the car later than the pick-up time?

When we visited at Christmas we returned the car two hours late, I was billed for one hour by Alamo as their agreement states that the rental is for x days + 1 hour from when you sign the agreement in the airport.

We have just returned but we returned it with about 5 mins before the extra hour expired and were not charged.
