Retired spending winter at DVC

This past Jan/Feb, I spent 34 nights at BWV in a studio. It was absolutely wonderful!! I was solo most of the time; DH "visited" for a few days; and our DS finally (after an 8 year absence from WDW) made it down and stayed on points in his own studio, with a few friends. I loved and savored every second! It was like my winter home where my loved ones came to visit! :smooth:

I can't wait to again spend part of the winter at the BWV.

I may be 20 years away from spending my winters at OKW, but that has been my plan since 1999! I've even worked out a points usage comparison chart, and will spend the weeks at the Boardwalk that require the same as OKW, then will "move" to OKW to conserve. I am up to 8 weeks so far, paying cash for 2-4 of the weekends, and spending only 2 weeks in a 2-bedroom so my kids can come visit. The rest of my stay will be split between a studio and a 1-bedroom. It's really complicated;) DH just wouldn't understand. For my plan, I am checking-out of a 2-bedroom(lock-off) on a Friday morning, keeping just the studio for the next 9 nights(2 weekends and 5 weeknights), then moving into a 1-bedroom for the next 5 nights, paying cash for the weekend, then (hopefully) adding a studio(without moving)for 5 more nights in a 2-bedroom. I will likely pay cash to spend the next 2 nights in the 2-bedroom(if the visiting children can stay through the weekend), then keep just the 1-bedroom for 5 nights. I just added more points at HH a few months ago, so I will definitely spend a few days there on my way to Florida, and again on my way back. My ideal plan is to start my great adventure around Christmas, possibly treating the kids to a holiday at WDW, then spending 6-8 more weeks in a DVC unit. Of course, I'm going to have to buy more points to cover Christmas!!:teeth: Good luck with your dilemma...I vote you split your stay.

Last Winter I spent over 6 weeks at different DVC resorts, I am very lucky I am able to do this at such a young age of 23. Money is definently a real good thing to have.

I am so insanely jealous of you people that I cannot stand myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!;)

Seriously, we talked to a bellman one time whose parents did this. They bought enough points to stay from Jan. 1-March15. It cost them what a home down there would have cost, and when they left, they had no worries about leaving a vacant home.

I am inches away from retirement and DVC is calling. Maybe it is because I have not made the mental transition yet, but my dream is to use points going on 4 or 5 trips throughout the year rather than all at once (even though I come from a VERY L-O-N-G winter!) I love the anticipation of an upcoming trip and we could not afford to go for 4 weeks and still go several other times. I also don't like the idea of being away from home so long. Guess I'm the only one who thinks like that. Maybe time will change my perspective??

and DBF laughed at me last weekend when I said if we doubled our points we could spend a chunk of the winters down there when we retire!

We are 20 years away from retirement but have enough to spend 6 weeks in a studio. You all are making my very jealous, but this is something we have talked about. We would eventually like enough for an 8 week stay in a 1 bdr so we have a ways to go.

We've been doing some preliminary planning to spend mid Jan- mid March at WDW at BWV and OKW. Our timeline is within 7 years. I wonder how would you book this long a stay. in blocks of weeks or day by day? Has anyone book several weeks, how did you do it?
BTW we are waiting on ROFR for 250 BWV that will help move us along to the points we need to fulfill our dream.

I just love this thread - oh to dream!

But I think when it actually arrives I'll be with jekjones1558 in sentiment. I love the idea, and certainly with air fares from the UK, longer trips seem like a good idea but, there are too many things I'd miss - my cats for a start.

So I wish you all well with your plans but I think we will continue to be twice a year people; always assuming we can afford to do that in retirement. :D

I just booked 3 weeks awhile back but no weekends. I just called once a week like I always do. I think I might have done something a little different for the MLK weekend, like 3 and 2 because the weekend end got in thw way, you know it was Friday and did not have the week completed. BWV present a different set of problems when making reservations as you know because of the view situations, but for OKW you can do one week at a time.

Because we own at both OKW and BWV we are thinking about splitting the time between the two or maybe do weekends at Animal Kingdom or Poly concierge. We are haning a ball with the different plans.
I prefer BWV standard view so will probably book there on a daily basis. Listen to me I've got at least 5 years!

Cindy and I both only have a little over 3 years to go to retirement. We plan on moving to

No more

for us ever again.

Nick,
Your graphics are great, even more incentive to make our plan work. It is a weekly ritual of ours planning where to stay and how big a villa do we need. The dreaming is cheap but the executing is not!

AHHAAA..
A brand new DVC concept...........DVC retirement villages!I love the thought. Countdown timers, bicycles with three wheels, streamers and huge baskets. BEEP, BEEP, GET OUT THE WAY!! :yo-yo:

Olivia's, Spoodle's and Whispering Canyon better start getting their Early Bird Specials menus prepped! :)

A DVC retirement village would be a great idea! Instead of bike rentals, we could rent "scooters" to tour the resort, and we wouldn't need that water slide everyone is so crazy about OKW getting! A bigger hot-tub would suit us old farts better. And if they had an onsite kennel, we could bring our best friends with us. And don't forget RV parking...this retirement village idea won't work at the BWV because of the limited parking. Ahh, the possibilities are endless...
