Retired and Working at WDW

Doesnt the word retire mean just that? (not to work anymore?) I retired at age 50 (and now 62) and did so for just that reason,,,not to work anymore. I'd rather have fun at the parks than working for them.

I was a bit confused by that too! (I wondered if it was just a British difference!) Unless Disney takes volunteers, I guess I wouldn't call that retiring, just changing jobs!

Anyway, it sounds like a lovely idea- good luck to all those planning to do that!

Most of our help at the food shelf, shelter, donation store are retirees. No pay but certainly work, they did not retire to not "work" another day in their lives. Some folks just like to keep busy or help I guess. WDW gets them out of the winter as well. I doubt they plan to get rich there anyway.

Speaking only for myself, I'll likely be retiring somewhat early (in my 50s) and will be looking for something to do to fill my days. A part time job at a place you truly enjoy is a reasonable way to go. Volunteering at some charitable organizations that truly help those that need it is another.

My husband will be 39 when he can officially retire from the military. That's only a few years away. He probably won't retire as soon as he's eligible, but he could. I suppose he could just stay home for the rest of his life but I doubt he will. My Mom is 53 and in a few years she could retire from her job with a pension and medical benefits. She will be retiring when she's eligible since the work she does is physically demanding and she knows she won't be able to do it for the rest of her life. But she'll probably get a part time job to supplement her income.

Our house goes on the market next week and then next stop central Fl. We will be looking for a place to rent temporarily while we house shop. I'd love to work in one of the parks but most of the areas we like are about an hour away and don't want to spend that much time commuting for a part time low wage job but we'll see.Just looking forward to being able to drop in when the mood strikes and exploring the different towns and beaches in the area.

A word of warning,,,Wait till you go to register your car(s). Its $400 per car because Florida considers it a new car being that its your 1st time registering it (them). Then you have the tags on top of that. When I moved here 7 years ago it was only $200 for me.

A word of warning,,,Wait till you go to register your car(s). Its $400 per car because Florida considers it a new car being that its your 1st time registering it (them). Then you have the tags on top of that. When I moved here 7 years ago it was only $200 for me.

Thanks for the heads up. We both just renewed ours here not too long ago. I heard the first time they slam you pretty hard.

I think its definitetly more common to see older people working here in the US than in the UK (I lived over there for a year), many by choice but others unfortunately not.

I think working part-time at Disney would be a good retirement job, but it would depend where I was placed. Some of the abuse I see CM's get from guests...

Wait until Sept to register your car..All vehicles fees being reduced Sept 1st 2014...Thank you Gov Scott...

That fee reduction is ONLY for the tags,,,not the "1st time $400 fee".

Are you saying you cant start collecting your pension or social security until youre 68? That seems strange if its pension. Maybe its a company thing. I was able to start collecting my pension 1 month after turning 50 (32 years in the motion picture business and then my social security 1 month after turning 62.
Yeah I know I took a loss by starting it at 62 but you never know when you will shuffle off from this life so if I happen to shuffle off between now an 65 at least I got something vs nothing.

State Pension age for me: 68 (that's the one my national insurance pays for)

I work for a school, so have a Local Government Pension (the one I pay for specifically)... I think I can start to claim that at 60, but the rate isn't good. If I can hold on until 65, it's much better... but I think I'd need to wait till I could claim both.

We are not retired but we moved here in Dec. I am a Department of Defense employe at the Shades of Green resort. We are renting an apartment in Abaco Key http://www.abacokeyapartments.com We are very close to Disney and many cast members live here. It is very quiet and the management is responsive. We would like to settle in this Windermere/Winter Garden area but it might be out of our budget for a mortgage. We want some money to play at Disney and a Universal

My husband and I retired, moved to Florida and are working part-time at Disney. We moved here from Ohio. We had no idea where we wanted to live, except that we wanted to live close to Disney. We settled on an apartment complex called Alta Corners. It is located at the far west end of 530/192, about six miles west of World Drive. It is a very nice apartment complex. We lived there for three years. We recently moved into a neighborhood and are renting a house. We are now located approximately four miles south of the Animal Kingdom off of Old Lake Wilson Road. The neighborhood is called Indian Ridge. I have no idea how many long-term rentals are in this neighborhood. There are a good number of short-term rentals, so we frequently have new neighbors. Sometimes that's a good thing...and sometimes it's not. I don't let it bother me much though. Debbie

Debbie - we took a drive around Indian Ridge looking at places to buy. But I got the impression that it was a lot of short term rentals. How is it otherwise?
