Restaurants to avoid?

I keep hearing good things about many of the restaurants at DW. We are going for the first time and I'm wondering if any of you veterans have suggestions as to which restaurants we should avoid when we're there. Thanks :flower:

Chef Mickey's, Pinnochio's Village Haus, the ABC Commisary and Backlot Express, and San Angel Inn are the only places I will NEVER EVER EVER eat at again, if it was FREE or they PAID me I wouldn't eat there again.

That said, there are a few other places I don't eat at, as follows:

Coral Reef I think it's terribly expensive for mediocre (but not bad) food

Palio, had two REALLY bad experiences there with service, not right to spend $150 on a meal and get horrendous service. If it was free, I'd go back.

Sci-Fi Drive In--Some love it, we thought the food was "OK", the service was "meh" and the atmosphere was uncomfortably cramped.

Big River Brewery, so-so service and so-so food, too many good places to eat to waste my time eating there.

Portabello yacht Club--had SUCH bad service and medicore food we haven't gone back. Keep meaning to, I think we caught them on a bad night.

Garden Grill, ok service, ok food, but again, so many great places to eat, why waste the time?

Boma--I have food allergies, and this is the ONLY place at WDW that they didn't try to accomodate me, and I couldn't eat 95% of the food there. AFTEr my son and husband finished eating, right down to dessert, the server offered to bring me a chicken breast from the kitchen when he realized I hadn't eaten anything. Had he been attentive, he would have noticed this issue half an hour earlier. The chef also did nothing but walk me through teh buffet and tell me I couldn't eat almost everything on it--again, no offer to try to accomodate me. I would have been happy to pay for a dinner from Jiko to be brought over, there are several great items on their menu I can eat. Boma at breakfast was a different animal and I strongly suggest it!

Alfredo's--overpriced so-so food, and generally indifferent service give me no reason to want to run back there.

We'll be avoiding The Rainforest restaurant in DTD. It was overrated, overly crowded, and the food was just ok.

We got served late, the meal was rushed and the waitress tried to upsell everything. We specifically asked the size of portions and it wasn't even close. We ordered way too much food based on her recommendations. She said everything was small. We couldn't believe the size of everything. There was hardly room at the table. Ofcourse the bill stung, because we didn't need all of that food. UGH.

Our worst meal at WDW was about five years ago. There was nothing good about it. I am usually one to give a second chance as any place can have an off day, but the food was just brutal.

The restaurant..... Mama Melrose's

There are others that I'm not rushing back to, but that's the only one that I've actually "black listed". :drinking:

ducklite, I truly enjoy posts like yours. It does make me re-think. I mean, perhaps they just had a really bad off day? If I see more comments like yours, perhaps I will re-consider...

I also agree with your earlier post. I have a second "black lister" - Portabello yacht Club. My family and I found this one very bad as well. :drinking:

The biggest disappointment for both dh and me this past fall was Rose & Crown. My chicken pie was absolutely disgusting -- full of cheap, frozen vegetables and just plan yucky tasting. Dh's fish and chips were soggy! Fortunately, all our other meals were quite good.

We won't be going back for dinner. We thought the meals were awful-....and the service...terrible!!!

:flower:
I know what you mean by giving the restaurant a second chance, BUT, we would not go back to "Mama Melrose" no how, no way!!!!!
we had the Fantasmic Dinner Package there, "and this was the senerio": the restaurant was PACKED, when we got our table for 6, we literally had to brush off the crumbs from ALL of the seats, (I guess they just weren`t cleaned from the family before us). we gave up asking for some bread, the food was just bad, and before you knew it, we were walking out, looking @ each other, asking ourselves " WAS THAT DINNER"??!!!!!! :earseek:
Ever since then, I can`t mention MM to DH without an "OH NO"!!
We always try to give Disney Restaurants another chance ( if we thought it was just an off night ), since basically we love most of our dining experiences, but "sorry Mama Melrose, you were voted off our PS lists for the unforseeable future, " )! :sad2:

I think it's really a personal choice issue. For example, I have young kids and we love Chef Mickey's (it's not gourmet food, but it's decent.) On the other hand, we don't set foot in either restaurant in Mexico, but I know lots of people who love them.

Last spring my family had horrible, not even as good as frozen, pizza at the Pizza Planet. But some people say it's a good value for decent pizza. Maybe we'll try it again this year.

We really HATED Chef Mickey's. The food was cold and horrible. The character interaction was bad (minnie was downright rude to my older DD). The ONLY thing edible on the buffet were the potatoes. Will never go there again. No need to try it twice.

What have you heard about the restaurant in Mexico? I've been wanting to try it and was thinking we might in a few weeks.

I second how bad the pizza is. Anywhere at DW really. My wife likes it a bit. I think it could be improved. Maybe if a truck backed over it...

The Mexican food is not horrible, but we live in Texas where we get phenomenal Mexican food at a variety of places. The Mexico pavilion had mediocre food as far as we were concerned.

For me there are two that I will never go to again.
1. Alfredo's. Haven't been there since 1986, worst service I have ever seen at any restaurant anywhere.
2. Rose and Crown. Worst food I have ever been served.

Now if they could combine the great service at Rose and Crown with the great food at Alfredo's they'd have real winner.

WOW! Our experience was the exact opposite. The food was great, I didn't know when to stop eating. :) We received lots of attention from all of the characters, sometimes 4 of them at our table goffing around at once. Oh & Minnie wouldn't keep her hands off of DH! It was just terrible. I think she was jealous of the obvious connection I had with her main mouse! :rotfl:

Sorry could just be us but we've tried 3 times but never again. :wave2:

Ok, fair enough. I won't dare eat a sub or a cheesesteak when on vacation. Not like home.

Ok, so knowing that I don't get much genuine mexican food way up here, is it likely better than the local fare I have now?

Please Capt Jack's to the Wall of Shame. Wonderful service, but food so appalling that we had a laugh about it afterwards.
