Restaurants that are no more

Wienerschnitzel! :lmao: Remember at first they were called "Der Wienerschnitzel? My mom, who was born and raised in Germany, used to complain that they had the name grammatically incorrect. It should have been Das Wienerschnitzel!

She seemed more concerned about that than about wienerschnitzel being a breaded veal dish, not a hot dog. :rotfl2:

Someone mentioned Jack in the box?! OMG! they were it when I was a kid then they left. So many years later, I went to Oahu last year and had 2 Jack In the Box shakes in the same day!!!!!!! Great now I want one.

Oh and Shakey's pizza ours is now a Gentleman's club, yes thanks for messing up my happy memories there as a child.

Sonic-use to be one everywhere, now I know of only 2 or 3 in the state.
Farrells Ice Cream-atmostphere plus great ice cream
Godfathers-the best pizza,ever
Shakeys pizza-really good too
Big Boy Restaurant-with the giant kid holding a hamburger outside
Taco Tico-way better fast food than TB

I miss Farrell's, and the best egg burritos ever at Naugles (was a chain in Southern California, don't know if it extended beyond). They got bought out by Del Taco, and the egg burritos haven't been the same since. :sad1: ;)

I also remember Shakey's Pizza. We used to go there for "bunch-a-lunch", I think it was an all-you-can-eat buffet for like $5. Not just pizza, but fried chicken, salad and those Mojo potatoes.:rotfl:

There used to be a little chain of Mexican fast food places in the Denver area called Taco Cabana. They were pretty good. I don't know why they all disappeared.

We still have Bennigan's here in Colorado as well.

I remember Taco Cabana...and Shakeys now that you mention it...it was a girl scout badge session...was a fireplace store and will be torn down soon to be ANOTHER car lot.

I had no idea Farrell's was a national chain, I thought there were just a few in the NY/NJ area.
I remember there being a Victoria's Station in East Brunswick NJ

There was a Geno's in the town I grew up in, I remember nothing about it other than the name and that it was replaced by a KFC

Bennigans are all over the place here and I run into a Roy Rogers every once in a while. Generally at the rest stop on a highway.

Didn't there used to be a Farrell's in Brunswick Square mall?

Sure was. I still remember when they ran out of birthday cakes on my birthday. To their credit they sent someone out to a local bakery to try and make good on it.

Shakey's Pizza (in Milwaukee, WI, in the early 70's- don't know if it was a chain or not)
Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips
The Mad Italian sub shop
Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor
Magic Pan crepe restaurant
Scallini's Italian restaurant

:rotfl2: I remember when we got one of those in the 70s. For East Texas, it was very exotic. :lmao: I loved the polish sausage hot dogs.

We also had something called Alvin Ord's. It was like Schlotsky's Sandwich Shop, but the "mascot" was a bald monk in long robes. I actually liked it better than Schlotsky's. I think there may be just a few left in the US and I haven't seen one in years. Yum.....

There is still an Alvin Ord's operating in San Marcos, TX

They just opened a Del Taco here a couple of months ago. I was wondering if it's any good!

IMHO they are no where near as good as they were 20-25 yrs ago before the menu changed. Now they are like any drive thru/fast food taco place ie Taco Bell.
When I was in highschool Del taco while still counter service, served food more like a sitdown mexican restaurant.
the menu had "real" enchiladas made with soft corn tortillias
deep fried chimichagas etc. Meals came with beans, rice, chips and salsa etc.

Now I remember Magic Pan since a bunch of y'all brought it up. We used to go eat there for lunch and then shop at Cumberland Mall on Saturday. It was sooo good.

And...Sizzler.. I'm sorry... but this Western' Sizzlin place they have in the south IS NOT the same!!
...

A&W Rootbeer Stands... Those were the BEST!!!

Sizzler - my first job. Started out on salad bar duty, then as order taker (loved the microphone), then as a waitress.

Loved A&W! The rootbear in those kegs. :lovestruc

Can't forget about Woolworths Grill. Something about their grilled cheese and those roasting, rolling hot dogs. :rotfl2:

Farrell's Ice Cream
Howard Johnson's
Thrifty Drug Store Coffee Shops (California)
Sambo's

I was going to say all but Howard Johnson's. I really miss the Thrifty Drug Store coffee shops. K-Mart had them, too and they were okay....but not as good as Thrifty.

At the Sayrewoods shopping center, we had a Kresges with a lunch counter, and OMG, they had the best hot fudge cake ever!! Puts Shoney's hot fudge cake to shame!!

The best thing about eating at Woolworths was ours had self-serve soda. 40 years ago it was a real treat! We would get the sub sandwiches at the front of the store and then go to the snack bar and get our own drinks and then eat them in the window. It was my DB and my favorite place to eat. We could never understand why our DF would never take us there to eat? Something about over his dead body would he ever eat in a dimestore window???
