Restaurants that are no more

Inspired by the "Food of the 80s" thread, I started thinking about great restaurants that are no longer with us. :sad1:

Does anyone remember Rax? I know I ate there alot, but all I can remember are their Chocolate Chip shakes.

How about Chi-Chi's? My favorite meal was the Cancun (seafood enchiladas) and whatever was the Margarita of the Month.

Anyone else either enjoy the above or have more to add?

What about restaurants that are still around, but menu items that are no more such as the BBQ Pizza from Pizza Hut or the Tostada from Taco Bell?

:dance3:

Chi-chi's can still be found in Brussels!

I didn't read all posts yet, but I am going to go back, so I apologize if this was listed, Chesapeake Bay Seafood House. I loved their fried cod and hush puppies. Best seafood ever, cannot find anything since that is as good! I think it was the batter on the cod that made it.

If anyone is looking for a Bennigans, you can still find them in the Chicago area. There is one in Schaumburg near Woodfield Mall, one in Elgin at the Holiday Inn on Rte 31 and I-90, and there is at least one other in the area because my friend's brother is a manager there (but I'm not sure where it is). Anyway, google to fine their website and you can look up other locations.

Reading all of these posts brings back memories. When I was a kid we used to stop at Burger Chef. Loved it. And in the winter when my Dad would take us out snowmobiling we would stop at Lums for him to have a few beers and us kids to have a hot dog. Also, on the rare occasions when the family went out to eat we used to go to Bonanza or York Steak House.

When I was living in Omaha I absolutely loved Godfather's Pizza. They delivered and they took checks! What more could an underpaid starving military person want. And when I was stationed in southern California I got hung up on Naugle's taco salad. I ate them whenever I could afford them!

And one by the Cumberland stop on the blue line.

I was on a road trip this weekend and saw a Ground Round. I almost died. I looooved that restaurant when I was little. I had no idea they were still around.

Wow, this brings back a lot of memories! It's funny -- I never thought Ground Round was a chain. I even worked for the company (at Rumbleseats, of which I believe there was only 1) and didn't know that Ground Round existed outside of Jersey :sad2:.
I remember they would weigh the kids (under a certain age) and the price for their food would be a penny a pound. And of course, I remember all the peanut shells on the floor :)

I LOVED Farrell's... This is another place I thought only existed in my world (which, at the time, was the Staten Island Mall ;)) All that good ice cream, and the candy shop in the front... mmm!

There's a Little Cesar's around the corner from my house. My friends and I always laugh when we see it, because we can't believe any of them are still open ;)

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but I used to love Kenny Rogers Roasters. They had this chicken pot pie in a bread bowl... omg, it was sooo good! Those are all gone from this area now, as far as I know.

I completely forgot about Kenny Rogers Roasters. They had the best rotesserie chicken and cornbread!!!

Does anyone remember Black Eye Pea restaurant or Semolina Pasta? I think they were both chains.

I miss Junior's Restaurant. Used to go there in college. It is now a Denny's across from U Miami.
They just closed Wolfie's , long time restarant from the 50's and Tabatchnick's is gone as well.
Morrison's Cafeteria is gone from around here now and we also lost Picadilly's at Cutler Ridge Mall. Applebee's killed it.

also KRYSTAL BURGER.....in OCALA....we always stopped on the way to and from Gator games...gotta have my Krystal fix you know...now, it is no more!
THat was still open a few years ago. DH and I would always stop and bring home a bunch when going from DeFuniak Springs to Miami

Our Ground Round closed last year.
So did our Copelands (I never had a chance to eat there - the building was completely demolished).
Used to live near a CHiChi's but that closed in 2000? 2001?
The Don Pablo near my sister in Newport News, VA is something else now.

We still have a Denny's (but I haven't eaten at a Denny's since college).

I went to a Bennigan's a couple of years ago in Laurel, MD but I don't know if it is still there.

I remember when I was about 10, living in Sunrise, FL, we used to go out to Godfather's Pizza about once a month - there was some pitcher you bought and then brought back for free refills? We always got birch beer. Anyway, we found out that they were closing the GFP and replacing it with a Chargrills or something like that - Char Burgers? - and I was so mad. I kept thinking who on Earth would choose burnt, charred burgers over Godfather's Pizza!

I miss "Cookies" "Mario and Luigis" and "Jahns" which all used to be here in Brooklyn.

wow a lot of these we have EVERYWHERE here, like: Bennigan's, Sonic, Jack in the Box, Whataburger(maybe it's cause it began in Texas?), Little Cesars...

anyway...my big missed place is somewhere I'm certain they didn't have in the north and not sure if it even exists anywhere in the south anymore...but it was Po Folks...checkered table clothes, drank out of mason jars, they had the BEST fried chicken and had the most awesome shirts that every one had when I was little:

There is a Po Folks in Mariana, FL just off I-10 on the way to WDW. They have changed the ones in Atlanta to just Folks, but they are now owned by another company, but the food is just as good.

I loved the chocolate chip shakes at RAX, nobody can make a shake as good. Ours closed years ago to make way for an IHOP, I hate IHOP. I also loved the salad and food bar at RAX.

We have a Houlihan's, but it is expensive, so we only go for special occassions.

Oh I remember that. Woolco (sp?) was the more "upscale" retailer of the 2 and had a huge eating area in the back with old dark wood paneling. the Woolworths was more of the 5 and 10 and had more of the drugstore lunch counter up front at the windows.
I loved getting pattymelts at Woolworths and I think the spaghetti dinner at Woolco.

Cumberland Mall.... Haven't been there since Town Center Mall finally got a Disney Store. That was probably 10 yrs ago.

PoFolks...... it's called Folks now but they have closed several locations I believe. They also changed much of the menu and got rid of the mason jar glasses. I absolutely hate that their chicken and dumplings is now basically a chicken noodle soup. They do still have really good fried chicken livers.

Folks is not the same company, but to me the food is just as good. I haven't had the chicken and dumplings, though. I only order one thing when we go there and that is the fried chicken gizzards.

There are still some Po Folks locations in Florida. I have been to one near Destin and one in Mariana.

Different strokes for different folks! My husband and I love our two local Red Robin's! :thumbsup2

The commercial that drove us crazy was Ruby Tuesday's. We don't have any out here and we finally ate at one in Orlando, just because we finally could!

Meh.

A lot of the places mentioned I've never even heard of, but a few sound familiar. I can remember eating at a Sambo's in El Monte, Ca. when I was a wee child. There is at least one Bob's Big Boy left out here, I think it's in La Verne. The one we miss is Bennigan's. There was one that hubby and I always stopped at on the way back from Disneyland for ice cream!
