Lots of familiar names in this thread. The title caught my eye because we just noticed that our local Macaroni Grill is gone and we ate there just a few weeks ago.
Here in RI we had York Steak House as well as Rustler and Bonanza - which were actually in the same location. When one closed the other opened - and I worked there for a few summers. There was also Vallee's Steak House which was a New England chain. They were sit-down rather than cafeteria-style like the others.
My first job was at an A&W Root Beer stand - I was a car hop but we didn't wear roller skates.
OMG about Ground Round and Lums (we called it Slums!) Just last night we were reminiscing that those were both places that kids could drink while underage - and the drinking age back then was 18!!! Those are the memories that you don't share with your kids!
I remember Beefsteak Charlies for their shrimp and their sangria. In fact one Beefsteak Charlies became a Victoria Station but both are long gone now around here.
We had Burger Chef and another local chain but the name escapes me. It was a drive up place, no indoor seating.
When my IL's moved to Orlando in 1988 they loved Wags on I-Drive for breakfast. They'd also get donuts from Bill Knapps but that restaurant on I-Drive burned down. When we cleaned out their apartment not long ago I found an old bag from there - a Knapp Sack!
Remeber when Kmart had a cafeteria? I remember going there LOTS when I was a kid. Not just a nachos, hot dog place, a real cafeteria.
I remember the cafeteria in K-Mart and the lunch counter at Woolworth with the balloons to pop for a banana split.
Did anyone's (I guess in FL) Burdine's have a restaurant?
Jordan Marsh - a department store in New England - used to have a restaurant too. They also had a bakery and were famous for blueberry muffins. Speaking of blueberry muffins - there was also a chain called Pewter Pot that served muffin sundaes!
