Can anyone recommend a good dinner in or near the Hollywood Studios? (Willing to go to a resort for a character dining experience, but don't want to go too far.)

there are a few "good" options in or near, it really depends on your definitition of "good"...

do you want upscale/quieter? then head over to the brown derby (in the park) or yacht club for captain's grille or yachtsman steakhouse or the boardwalk for kouzzina... we've always enjoyed our meals at mama melrose's...

do you want good fun? then try sci fi or primetime (in the park)... or perhaps cape may at the beach club for a character meal at b'fast and a seafood buffet at dinner... hollywood & vine offers a character meal for b'fast and lunch too!

personally, when i'm in a park, i prefer to stay there... there's very little that can drag me out!

If you're looking to stay in the park, I definately suggest Mama Melrose's! It has a wonderful dinner atomosphere (slightly dark, strings of lights), and I've only eaten there once but both my dinner and sis's dinners were excellent. It's very much like Olive Garden.

If you go on a hot day, another good, cool-ing restaurant is SciFi. It's pretty dark and not only does that cool me off (and I'm used to Fl weather!), but it's also relaxing. It's definately not the same as Mama Melrose's (Sci-Fi is more "fun", Mama Melrose's is more "casual elegance).

The beach clubs Cape May cafe has a clambake character dinner buffet. The beach club is a walk or boat ride from HS.

dinner at cape may is not a character meal (if i am remembering correctly)... it is a clamback buffet...

For a good dinner, my first choice would be Brown Derby. If price or meal entitlements is a consideration I would suggest 50's Prime Time Cafe. I have not eaten at Mama Melrose's for awhile. But would not hesitate to try them again.
Depending on what you want and your schedule, you could take the boat over to Epcot. That puts you at World Showcase, which offers a lot of good eats. :thumbsup2
But Captain's Grille at Yacht Club is not bad. Everything I have had is tasty.
There is also Kouzzina's, Flying Fish and Big River Grill on the Boardwalk. All good too.

DH and I will be eating at Captain's Grille (lunch) on our HS day. We have done the same thing on an EPCOT day. I find it to be a relaxing break from the parks. We'll be taking the boat.
