Seriously? $30 an hour?! I have two undergraduate degrees and my husband is almost finished a PhD. Neither of us make $30 an hour. I should have stayed uneducated! And here servers make at lease minimum wage, so they probably clear even more...

Please dont assume we are uneducated beause we choose to take care of you when you dine out!

I don't assume any waiter/waitress is uneducated. I treat my night out as an "experience" and usually tip my server 20% or better. I know that when I "go out" the ticket is at least 150 - 200. My service is flawless in most cases and I treat my server very, very well.

It was just the epitome of bad taste for that "goober" person to scoff at $30/hour. Around here that is VERY good money and I highly doubt the waitstaff make that on a regular basis.

There are nasty customers and there are nasty waitstaff....obviously...

My niece bartended during college. When she graduated she took a huge pay hit. It was average for her to take home $200/night tips oon a good night.

She wanted to continue bartending, but her job would not let her moonlight.

Well, aren't you lovely.... If 30/hr isn't cutting it, take your sorry butt back to college and make a trade CUTTING it!!!

Um cleary you didn't read my posts I am a registerd nurse with a bachelors degree working on my masters currently.... (I had a 4.0 mind you) I was merely sticking up for the waitstaff that were being degraded here

I still don't think $30 an hour is great money, depending on where you live... I am sure I am not alone in my belief that in my profession we should make at least $50 plus

I wasn't scoffing at it, I was just saying I didn't think it was "great" money... I also stated that I made that amount an hour my first nursing job....

How was it the epitome of bad taste??

Did you read the posts where ppl were basically degrading the wait staff and looking down at them for having possibly been able to make that amount of money without a college degree??? :confused3

The Septa bus drivers here make more then that, and they don't require a degree either, have great benefits as well... so are then any more deserving then the waitstaff

I agree that is is legal... and as I used to wash dishes as a teen, I wish the place had done just that. I was making less than $3 an hour. "Most" of my pay was to be from tips I was told. This was a slightly upscale place that was always BOOMING.

The waitresses did bus their own tables. The only people besides them that got tips were bartenders - who kept ALL OF THE ONES they got, and the dishwashers. If it got SUPER busy the dishwashers would help bus tables.

For a 6 hour shift, 5 or 6 waitresses would generally tip me $15 in TOTAL. Now, this was 30 years ago, but I know that these women routinely took home $75+ in tips a night.

So each diswasher got $15.... less than 10% of all tips.... we were told to expect 15% of the waitresses tips.

Maybe you picked the wrong career?? :confused3

Because I could easily make double that just working Agency

Looks like I need to change professions. I'd LOVE to make a measly $30 an hour.

To ease the tension.... this reminds me of a funny story

When I was a brand new nurse one of the new nurses on orientation had just "stripped" her way though nursing school at a very upscale club (philly folks will know which one I am referring to ;) ) anyways on our 3rd week of orientation she came in and basically gave her notice that she was done! She stopped to talk to me and explained that after getting her first paycheck she realized that she made a heck of a lot more money in one week of stripping then she did in two weeks of what she referred to as "slave labor" on the nursing floor...

Needless to say she went back to the club and plans to keep her license in good standing so she can come back when she is too old to continue earning money they way she has :rotfl: :rotfl:

I am not saying it is measly! Believe me, I am just saying that it won't put you behind that Beemer in some parts of the country where the cost of living is high!!! GEEZ... I would have been flamed less if I had insulted the poor waiters

Because that is a lot of money for a single person to make, especially considering it doesn't require a college degree! Regardless, I really have a hard time believing most servers are making that, maybe at nice, high-end places, but Chilis, Applebees, really?[/QUOTE]

I was at a Texas Roadhouse on a Thursday night with my family. The table next to us had servers counting tips about 2 hours before closing time. This place is "slightly" more upscale than Chilis, maybe... I heard the one server complaing that he "only" made make $167 in tips! This, with 2 hours to go!... on a Thursday.

Servers work hard, I know. But I can certainly see why college graduates get upset when they hear these numbers.

BTW, my cousin still works at sports bar. She's over 40 years old, close to 50. She isn't what you would call a young hottie. She and I are close, and she tells me that on good nights she gets close to $400 in tips, and on great nights she has broken $500. She's been a server her whole life and is VERY GOOD at what she does.

You said you didn't understand why anyone thought it was a lot of money, which is just as offensive to those who don't make that much as insulting waiters is to those who are waiters. I'm not looking to drive a BMW. A new car would be nice, but I haven't had one of those since 1994 because I can't afford it.

AGAIN!! I also stated that I made that amount of money when I graduated and I just don't think it is a phenomenal amount to make!! How is that insulting.... ??? and that I personally was not driving a mercedes making even more then that now, I live comfortably but it still isn't great... i am not clearing the shelves at Sacs if you know what I mean :thumbsup2

BUT for someone who doesn't make that much, it IS a lot of money.

OK... but that did not give ppl the right to start holding their degrees in the air and screaming how unfair it is that the waiter made more money then them

I could just as easily scream that I make the same amount of money with my BSN ad the nurse in the room next to me with her associates from community college (which is completely true BTW) but I don't

I just feel that it is not a ton of money depending upon where you live.... I didn't intend on insulting anyone and therefore I am not apologizing for it... It's my opinion... if they want to make $30 plus an hour then come to philly there is a nursing shortage employers are paying for you to complete your degree and sit for boards... I don't know what else to say about it... it's called supply and demand :confused3

8x30 = 240. 240/day is a nice salary....period. That is 1,200/week.

Goober person is delusional if she thinks that isn't a "nice" salary.

before taxes... and I work 36 a week thank you and 12 hour shifts not 8

After taxes and medical benefits I am lucky if I bring home $1600 a pay not a week! that is not a ton of money where I live... I have "comfortable" life. I am happy with it, but it is not excellent money HERE WHERE I LIVE!!!

OK honey, I have a RN degree and another degree and I find your posts insulting. I think you need to stop. People DO respect their servers. Posts like yours, make some people think twice.
