Touchscreens are everywhere now! Often right at the table...

A recent study across eight UK McDonald's restaurants showed fecal bacterial on every touchscreen tested. :crazy2:

How do you feel about this? (Poll coming)

"Touchscreen technology is being used more and more in our daily lives but these results show people should not eat food straight after touching them, they are unhygienic and can spread disease.

Someone can be very careful about their own hygiene throughout the day but it could all be undone by using a touchscreen machine once."

As someone who is immunocompromised, I care way less than I should about germs. I barely remember to Purell after I leave the hospital where my husband is.

I'm so confused. Where do they have touchscreens at restaurants? Admittedly, we do eat ff sometimes with the kids (I ain't too proud) and use mobile ordering, so I may have missed something not going into the restaurant.

ETA: I can only imagine how nasty my own phone is. Yuck.

If I use a touch screen right before eating, I would go to the ladies room and wash my hands before handling any food, straws, or utensils.

I went to my doctor and they upgraded their system and we all had to check in via an ipad or whatever. it was. I am far from a germaphobe but it truly gave me the willies. The screen was full of greasy fingerprints. Just gross. They need to clean it after every use in my opinion. I don't like them at restaurants either.

I hate them, I've always hated them. And I don't touch them unless I absolutely have to. My doctor's office started using them, and I've complained to everyone and anyone. I just hope they get rid of them. Or at least clean them more than once a week.

I wash my hands enough that they would be chapped if I didn't take care of them.

I am also immune compromised and I take it very seriously.

What is the difference between everyone touching the touch screens or all those same people touching the door handle when they've come in the door or the counter or any other surface that just happens to not be new technology?

Germs are everywhere. They aren't just on new technology.

My initial reaction is "ick!" to both the restaurants and doctors offices, but like Disneylover99 said, if it's there, it's on other surfaces, too. Chairs, counters, door handles, the pens I use to sign in at the doctor, etc. So I'm not going to worry about too much, I guess.

McDonald's definitely. I've been to a few McDonald's locations where the kiosks are mandatory unless someone has a disability that prevents use. Others have it where it's optional, but then they reduce the number of registers where one can order from a live employee. Costco is going to them now for point of sale purchases at the food court, although it's still possible to order at the checkout register. One can order, then pay at the window/counter when picking up.

Yep, we get MD's sometimes, but I haven't been IN one of their stores in ages. Mobile ordering saves the order and we get coupons. I like things to be easy! At least I know now why I seem like a luddite in this.

Aren't those touchscreens probably far cleaner than they keyboard you are typing on?

When you have to pay people $15-$20 per hour to take orders restaurants are going to look for ways to cut costs. You don't think that Costco can really make any money selling those hotdogs for $1.50.

Depends on who last touched them and what they were doing. They're generally pretty easy to clean since it's just a piece of glass.

My keyboard that I am typing on currently is probably filthy.

The fact is that anything that might be found on a touch screen would also be on door handles, counters, tabletops, etc. Just basic hand washing should be employed whether or not one is opening the door or using a screen.

I'll have to admit ignorance. I've never been in a Costco - although I think I might get addicted if I did. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I've just never seen it. Now I know why - mobile ordering:)
