I want to rent DVC points for a date 11 months in the future. If someone makes the reservation for me now, when does Disney send confirmation of the reservation? People that have offered to rent me the points want the balance paid "upon receipt of confrimation from Disney". My concern is having that DVC owner hold my money & reservation for almost 11 months. ANYTHING could happen.
Now, if Disney doesn't send the confirmation until... say... 5-6 months out, I'd be far less concerned about that.

Am I being overly cautious?

DVC should send the confirmation a few weeks after the reservation is made. If it isn't important to you to have this reservation made at 11 months out, then don't worry about making it later and then paying the owner. But if what you want is no longer available at that point, what will your response be????

What are you concerned will happen during the time you have paid the member and are waiting for the start of your vacation? If your plans change, you may be out of luck. You have to have that figured out with the member before they make any reservation for you.

This is kind of like Priceline. You gamble on a hotel for a good price. If you get what you really wanted, you are in luck. If you can't go at the last minute, well, that's just too bad for you.

yes, I'd be worried that the AKV savannah view rooms will no longer be available for this particular week if I wait much longer to make the reservation. And while I really don't mind 50% up front and the rest at a later date, paying the full 100% this far out seems odd to me.

My concern isn't so much that our plans will change. My concern lies more with issues for teh DVC owner. They could fail to pay dues, they could cancel the reservation, etc. I've never rented before so I'm unsure how this works.

Those are risks you take for a deluxe vacation at a lower price. You could rent directly from Disney if you want to spread your payment out over terms and if you want guarantees that the reservation will be there.

The points belong to the member. They are free to set any terms they want. If you don't like the terms the member is giving you, find another member to rent from.

If the member decides to sell their membership before the trip is taken, the reservation will be cancelled. All dues are due in Jan, unless they pay by direct debit from their bank account. If they no longer pay their dues, they will be foreclosed on by DVC after appropriate warnings.

You do know that you won't be able to confirm the reservation with Member Services for any reason? Disney won't get involved with your problem if you have any. This is a private agreement between you and the owner.

You really have lots of choices here.
1-Make the reservation at 11 months with the member you are talking to and pay in full upon confirmation sheet.
2-Find another member to make the reservation for you with different terms.
3-Make the reservation directly through Disney.
4-Buy your own DVC membership and make your own reservation.
5-Take a vacation elsewhere or not at all.

I think that it is pretty normal for the DVC member to want full payment up front... the confirmation letter comes in about 2 weeks. You (as the renter) need to know that once you pay your money, you're in no matter what. The DVC member wants your money b/c if you change your mind, I think there is some complicated system of how they can re-use those points.

We are renting for the first time, and so far so good! We have the confirmation in hand, and it is a little stressful knowing that I cannot call and double check the reservation, but I spoke with the DVC member on the phone, and I trust her... that's the risk you're taking to get the good deal. They are also taking a risk making sure you pay them!

I can imagine it is a little tough for you to plan at 11 months out... you have to be absolutely sure you are going at exactly that time. We only planned about 3 months out (you will have much less choice of resort), so less chance of our plans changing (although if they do, we are SOL).

Good luck!

So as soon as the member makes the reservation, the points come out of the member's total points available are allocated for that reservation...

I would expect the owner to want the money as soon as the reservation is made. You basically bought the points and the reservation...I don't know if i would look at it like your money is being held? Its not usual to have reservation 11 months out in DVC..for some locations and times..its mandatory.

Of course the owner could cancel or default or whatever but that could happen at 11 mos or 32 days.

You all make very good points and I really appreciate your input. I have tried to balance my (possibly irrational) fears and the protection the DVC owner needs. I think I have found a DVC owner that I can trust. She listened to all my concerns regarding timing & payments. She respected my thoughts on the subject and I think we're working something out that will protect us both as much as possible. We'll both be happy with the outcome, I'll have a reservation and she'll have her money.
