I understand you buy points and not an actual date so you are able to go anytime, but do you buy an actual resort or can you go to which ever one you want using your points?

Lets see if I get this right. I am sure Doc or Reg will correct me. You buy points at a resort. Mine are at VWL with those points I can make ressies 11 moths from my vacation at VWL. At 7 months out I can make ressies at any of the othe DVC resorts, OKW,BWV,bcv,HH or Vero Beach. I can also make ressies for other places once the point charts are for them. So one piece of advice you hear here is buy points for what resort you want to stay at most. Now Disney is selling points to new folks only at BCV and I think at HH and VB (not sure about those)and some add ons at VWL to folks already DVC owners. If you points at one of the others you need to find a resale. I hope this answers your question.

You do buy into an actual resort which becomes your home resort. and like DaveH says you can book your reservations there up to 11 months in advance of when you will be travelling. You can also make reservations at the other DVC resorts as early as 7 months in advance.

You can also stay at selected WDW resorts that are not part of the DVC, like the Polynesian and Contemporary. These resorts will cost more points than the DVC resorts for the same time. It has to do with taking inventory from paying guests who might not be making ressies at the DVC resorts (its not like you are trading your room at OKW for a room at the GF).

Our home resort is Disney's Vero Beach resort, which is a wonderful place. But we spend much of our time at WDW and have stayed at OKW and VWL.
