Resort Upgrade? Help!

For me, I would not enjoy a vacation if I did not enjoy the resort. At a high crowd time, it becomes even more important to have some resort downtime in the afternoon to get away from the crowded parks when fastpasses are scarce and then go back in the evening.

I'd stay at All stars and take Disney transportation and visit all the deluxe resorts for their decorations. Use some of that money and buy special holiday treats.
This is right on the money. You can always use that money to do things like book a carriage around Fort Wilderness or even extend the number of nights you stay at the cheaper accommodations. Where you sleep is one thing, seeing and doing more with the extra money gives you the best bang for your buck$.

Everyone has different opinions. With that said, the Wilderness Lodge is our favorite resort bar none. With THAT said, you can do an awful lot with the money you will save staying at a value. I'd save the $1700 for dining, buying stuff, or for extending the trip a few nights before spending it on a resort stay.

Overall, we love the deluxe resorts, but honestly, we go to WDW for the parks, food and experiences. The resort is a place to sleep.

We are resort people as well. In the past we have stayed 10-14 days and only do 3-4 park days. Those days are probably over for us though...work issues but mainly the exchange for us on the US dollar. We got back last night from a 4 night stay at WL...was supposed to be 5 nights but we had to leave early due to the hurricane. We have stayed at all the value and all but one of the mods.....many times for each one. This was a big splurge on the resort because we were only doing MNSSHP and the rest of the time was for relaxing at the pool. It was our first deluxe level stay and I have to say it wasn't worth it. I paid (in my own currency) $366/night.....I do realize that we got a killer deal because in USD I think we paid about $230/night. Our room was very worn out, there were tiny bugs around the fridge, the sink area was chipped, overall the room could have been cleaner, the beds had distinct dips on each side and the list goes on. We did enjoy the resort and had a great time. However, we've had just as good a time at a mod resort too. Specific to the room in all honesty it was no better than an mod. The only really upgrade, IMO, was having a balcony. Yes, there are added dining options but that is not a draw for us.

ETA: I think resort wise you get the most bang for the buck at a mod. You get a nicer room, nicer property, a TS, a lounge and better pool with waterslide.

I love WL, and really am not a fan of any of the value resorts. If you all won't be back for 6-8 years. .... that's quite a long time. Can you extend your trip a few days and stay at POFQ or Riverside? That would be my vote for $1700 dollars. Three days really isn't enough time to enjoy a resort and parks IMHO. Hope your trip goes well and you all have an amazing time!

Y’all are amazing. Sometimes I get in my own head and need people to talk sense into me. We are “resort people”. We can easily stay at the hotel for a few days and just enjoy what they have to offer. But yeah, we thought we were crazy to throw that much money at an upgrade like that.

We opted to add a day and do Universal. Even with express pass it’s cheaper than to upgrade our resort stay.

Thanks for the solid advice!

I seriously think that you made the right decision.

Enjoy your Christmas trip with Universal add on!!!!
