Resort Recommendation for us?

We are seriously considering becoming DVC members. We were all set to buy points at the SSR, but now I am wondering if that is the best choice for us. We all LOVE the beach and would most likely be using our points for at least one Vero Beach vacation per year. If we buy at SSR, what are the chances we could get a reservation at Vero Beach during April Break or President's Week? We would also plan on staying at WDW, but we are (currently) not picky about which resort. Unfortunately, since I am in education and we have three kids, we will be limited to taking our vacations either over February, April, or summer breaks. Since we live in cold and inhospitable Upstate New York, we often are desperate to go south in February and April. So, what are your recommendations?

I am new here, so please forgive me if I posted on the wrong forum. Thank you for your assistance!

Welcome to the board!

Because you can book at 11 months out for your home resort, if you buy somewhere besides Vero, you'll have to wait until 7 months out to book Vero - and that reduces the chances of being able to go when you want. Because you aren't picky about the WDW resorts, then buying at Vero may be the better bet for you.

However, we've not stayed at Vero nor tried to book there, so someone else will have to help you with the likelihood for booking at 7 months out.

Welcome to the Dis.

We own at BWV and have been booking 70% of our stays at VB since 1998. To date we have never had a hard time getting what we want, but then again we avoid holidays and such.

I am concerned though with SSR, AKV, and CRV coming on line that there will be so little beach space to accomodate so many members that VB & HH will become hard to acquire after the 11 month window. I am talking years from now, but I do believe this will be the case more so each year.

If you want to book holiday time you will most likely need some VB points to do it. Maybe you could split your purchase into VB & SSR (or AKV).

Good Luck with you decision... all decisions should be this fun. :)

Based on $$/pt and your desire to stay at VB, I would definitely choose a VB resale. There are VB resale contracts out there as low as $65/pt. SSR would be $91/pt. On a 150 pt contract, that is almost $4K in savings.

Not only would you save money, you would be able to book VB whenever you want to, and since the specific resort at WDW is unimportant to you at the moment, you can just take whatever is available.

Alternatively, you can buy a lower point VB and then add-on or buy another resale at a WDW resort once you find a favorite.

While I agree to some extent buying where you want to stay is important, it shouldn't be the only factor. When buying we were having a hard time with picking a home resort but we made our choice based on a few things. For one we knew we would spend most of our trips at WDW. Adding a trip here and there to Vero and HH. We liked the fact that SSR contracts have 12 more years than the others. Also we were comfortable with the price of dues. I believe Vero has the highest dues due to the hurricanes and upkeep of the resort. We have never had a hard time booking anything we want. When we do, we get on a waitlist and it has always come through! I was able to book Vero for June a few months before. I was able to book BWV for April about 5 months before. I don't think you'll have a hard time booking Vero at busy times, you just might have to be flexible with room choice.
