Last week, when dropping off DS for his second visit to the NC at the Poly, the CM who was registering him asked where we were staying.
[me] "The Swan."
[cm] "What room number?"
[me] "621"
[cm, repeating it while writing it down] "Six-twenty-one. No wait; that's wrong, all of our rooms have 4 numbers."
[me, not looking at what she is writing] "Yes, six-twenty-one; the Swan has rooms with 3-digit numbers."
[cm] "I've been working here 5 years, I'm sure we don't have a room number 621."
[me; finally looking down and noticing that she has written down that I am staying at the Poly] "I believe you, but I'm not staying here. I'm staying at" [enunciating very carefully] "*the* *Swan*, and my room number is 621."
[cm] "But Ma'am, we don't HAVE a room 621."
[me, getting exasperated now] "I understand that, but I am not staying at the Polynesian. I am staying at the Swan, as in, Swan & Dolphin. My room number is 621."
[cm, comprehension dawning] Oh, I'm sorry; I thought you said "this one."
--------------
Just what I needed, a little Abbott & Costello as a run-up to dinner! BTW, dinner, at Narcoosee's, was fantastic!
