Resizing avatars

How do you resize avatars?

My first thought was to put a picture in my avatar:

This was my 2nd choice:

and it's a smidgen too big.

Both are too big (I know I can only use one, I went with my first choice and it was too big, so I thought of another, but it was too big and all my other searches were too big).
