Hi. I'm new to DVC--just bought at SSR. I am about to make my first reservation and have a couple of questions. I plan to make a res for SSR 2 BR because we have 2 adults, 3 kids (7, 5, 3) and might bring 2 teenagers (niece & nephew) with us. If for some reason, the teenagers cancel on us, can we change the res and "downgrade" to a 1 BR? Or maybe we should keep the 2 BR anyway...
I guess it would be nice to know the "rules" on this since I am excited to start planning and plotting my points!

Thanks!

It all depends on what is available when call to make the change.

I would still advise keeping the 2BR. The occupancy limit on a 1BR is 4 and one child under 3. You will only have beds that sleep 4 and dishes for 4 and towels and wash clothes for 4.

Thanks, I think it makes sense to keep a 2 BR. For future reference, if I did switch my res from a 2 BR to a 1BR, what happens with the point difference?

First, a villa must be available. Once you have a 2B booked, you cannot simply eliminate the studio and downgrade to a 1B. If there are no 1Bs available, your only option would be to go on the waitlist.

If there is a room available and it's less than 31 days before arrival, the points will simply be returned to your account. The points must still be used before the end of your Use Year. If they are current year points, they can be banked subject to the banking guidelines.

If the points have been borrowed from the next Use Year, then you simply must use them before the end of the UY. You cannot "unborrow" points, nor can you bank them.

If you try to change the reservation less than 31 days before arrival, excess points would go into a Holding Account and can only be used to book a trip 60 days or less PRIOR to arrival, and they must be used by the end of the current UY.

I agree with TnRobin about keeping the 2B. All of the documents we signed as members limit occupancy to 4+1 under age 3 for a Studio or a One Bedroom. All Disney resorts do now track individual guest names for things like granting permission to Extra Magic Hours, so it's difficult to slip someone in under the radar. DVC reportedly will allow 5 guests in a One Bedroom, but, as Robin said, no extra bedding, no cots or rollaways, no extra towels.

And, since that policy is unofficial and goes against the written agreements we have with DVC, they could certainly revert back to the 4+1 policy without notice. Even with just 5 people you'll be much happier in a Two Bedroom villa.

Enjoy!

Thanks again for the info. I wasn't sure about the points issue. 31 days is the magic (excuse the pun) time...Have any of you stayed at SSR and what's your feeling? Will we feel warehoused like many of the posters imply?

Check out this thread:

Unfortunately the ugly posts tend to get the most attention and stick on the boards for the longest time. SSR has been home to many satisfied guests in the 13 months it has been open.

We stayed at the Boardwalk back in May and really missed our Home. Can't wait to be there again.

The official occupancy per the POS is 4/4/8/12. Even the one under 3 is an add on. Just to be clear, changing a 2 BR (even a lockoff) to a 1 BR is a cancellation and rebooking. If it's available, not big deal. But you cannot (technically) just drop a portion. However, this is one of those areas where DVC is inconsistent some one might be allowed to do so and the next person not.
