Reservations for low seasons- New DVC'er questions

Hi-
I just made an offer on OKW this afternoon that was accepted. Some of the reasons why we chose OKW was because of the large room sizes, low maintenance fees, and because we usually don't make formal plans to Disney (non- DVC resorts) until about 3- 4 months out. My kids are 2 and 3 and in the past we have visited during the low times in the year (September and November).

What I would like to know is should I plan on making reservations for my trips ( Sept. or Nov.) with DVC earlier in advance than 3- 4 months? Is it difficult to obtain reservations at BCV, BWV, or VWL in that period of time (3- 4 mos.) during low seasons? Part of what I like about Disney is the different resorts they have to offer. I look forward to trying different resorts even though I have a home resort.

Also, does the DVC resorts always seem to be full throughout the year? It would seem it would have to be that way if Disney has sold out of points at each particular resort (except SSR). Or has Disney allotted a certain number of rooms to be available to the general public?

Did I mention that I'm excited about owning? I am.

Congratulations on your purchase - you're gonna love it!

You have a good shot at getting what you want in September, but remember that the Food & Wine Festival runs into November. It is often hard to get reservations at BWV or BCV during this time.

You may just have to be a little bit more flexible on your dates and/or room size...

Welcome Home!

I don't think September is a problem, but, as stated, October and November can be. Also, remember that most DVC resorts fill up in the off season because points are lower then.

I have ABSOLUTELY nothing to offer here, as I am new myself!!!

I just wanted to say, "Congratulations!!!"

OKW, being the largest DVC resort (at least until SSR is fully completed), generally has the best availablility. But even so, since points tend o be lower during the Sept to November season, it would be a good idea to plan earlier. ESPECIALLY if you want to book at another on-site DVC resort.

I hope you did not purchase OKW with the express purpose of using your points at VWL, BCV or BWV. While you will certainly be lucky with your trades the majority of the time (if you plan early enough, or don't mind a wait list), there will be times you must stay at OKW...not to diminish OKW, it is my home resort and my favorite within the DVC system.

But the general rule of thumb, buy where you want to stay most often.

We bought thinking that we go during off-peak times as well, so we should have no problems, but because the amount of points are lower at off peak season, they become almost like peak season. We haven't had any problems yet booking anything, but we are taking advantage of our 11 month booking window. We tried to change our Oct. ressie and couldn't get what we wanted. We stuck with our original choice though, so we're okay.

We used to book 3-4 months in advance (or even less), but we have really changed the way we book Disney. I actually look forward to booking 11 months in advance, and I would have thought you were crazy if you told me that I would actually enjoy doing that!

It is frankly getting harder to book at short notice 3-4 months at the BWV,BCV, and the VWL .. not impossible just no guarantees. Having said that I recently booked the boardwalk for a june stay and was able to get boardwalk view and standard view for my short weekend trip. The weekend is often available due to higher points. The best advice is if you are flexible with your dates you should always be able to find availability somewhere but if you need a certain week especially Food & Wine festival or late Nov-early Dec you will have a much harder time. You can book your trip at OKW and then waitlist for another resort...at least you will be covered if it doesn't come thru for you.
