I will soon be a DVC member and had a question for future trip plans. Can I make a reservation using 2 memberships? My membership won't be enough to cover the entire stay so I'll be getting the rest of the pts from my MIL. Is that even possible? Or do I have to make 2 separate reservations? If so, will I have to switch rooms halfway thru vacation?
Thanks in advance:confused3

You have a few choices. Do you have the same home resort?

I own two contracts with different UY so they are different memberships, and I usually just book 2 nights on one contract, and 5 nights on the other then link them (of the same room size/category in the same resort). In your case your MIL would have to reserve some nights, then you can link them (unless you're an associate on her account, then you can book both). If you link the reservation is seamless.

Can't link if its a different room type, then its a split stay.

Alternately if you want to combine points for one night you'll have to transfer some into your account, using your 1 transfer per year for both accounts.

You can only combine points for one night at 7 months if its two different resorts.

They are/will be 2 different resorts and 2 different UYs. DH is associate on hers so we can make online res.
Basically we'll be getting a 2bdr & studio for fall '13. Our membership will be enough for 4 of 7 nights of studio. The rest will come from her membership.
If that is possible.

Just FYI - if you have multiple memberships (with different member #s), MS will transfer points between those contracts without losing the 1 time per year transfer ability. MS looks at this as an internal transfer (all to the same member). As long as the resorts are the same in both memberships, the 11 month priority may be used for reservations - if not, all points may be combined at 7 months.

I just did this last weekend. I did not need to transfer all of the points from one into the other and the MS rep explained that I could still transfer the remaining points at another time (for a 2nd transfer to myself) or to another member (to use the once per year transfer allowance).

Your comments above explain very well what options the OP has in their situation. Personally I would make two separate reservations (one from each account) and ask MS to link them together. The worst case scenario would be the need to pick up keys on the changeover day - but no need to change villas.

Enjoy! :)

I've done this with a friend. We are going to VGC in September, the first 3 nights are my points, the second 3 nights are her points, we linked the reservation into one.

One time we had a reservation where I had the first night, she had the second, I had the third and forth nights. They linked together flawlessly. We did it this way because the second night was a Friday and more points and she did not have points for more nights.

Recent reports all seem to be that linked reservations from different memberships/UY's now require getting new keys at each reservation change but you should stay in the same room. That's a change from how the old system could handle it. Having the dining plan and/or charging privileges can complicate things but what you are looking to do can be done.

You can't do the linking online and your DH (as the associate on the other contract) will have to do the call to MS to link across the 2 different ownerships.

Good to know! I seem to use up both of my transfers by transferring extra points in from other members the last few years, but if I ever want to transfer them between I'll know to ask for an internal transfer. :thumbsup2

I agree in principle but there are 2 caveat's as I understand them. I'm not disagreeing, only expanding on the issue since it's an area where the devil is in the details. One is that it does use the one in or one out transfer but that MS is more lenient on transfers of a single owner including at time even allowing banked/borrowed points to be transferred. However, my experience and information in the past has suggested that if I did a transfer to myself then wanted to transfer to a different owner, I would not be allowed to do so because I'd used up my 1 transfer. However, if I later needed to transfer again to myself, I would be allowed to do so. OTOH, if I did a transfer to another member and then wanted to transfer to myself, I would be likely allowed to do so. These exceptions are done on a case by case basis and I don't think there are formal written rules for these exceptions so it's very likely to get different answers from different people. Plus, it could change, especially when you throw in the resale issue of qualified vs non qualified points.

I had never transferred points bewteen our memberships at all in the past. I was calling about using points from two memberships for a 6 night reservation right at 11 months. I asked how I could do that and was told I could reserve 4 nights from one then 2 from the other - but would need to wait 4 more days to accomplish that. The other option offered was the internal transfer and the explanation I gave above about how it works and what limitations it has regarding other transfers from/to those contracts.

As Dean notes, DVC is nothing if not inconsistent and the explanation offered to me could disappear with another MS rep.
