Sorry if this is a duplicate question, but my searches turned up so many results it was hard to find my answer.

If our home resort is SSR, we have an 11 month booking window. If we want to stay at OKW and don;t want to risk NOT getting a reservation, can we book SSR @ 11 months, then attempt OKW at 7 months and cancel SSR if it is available?

Thanks for all your help.....

Yes; that strategy is very common for DVC members.

That's exactly what you want to do, unless you absolutely don't want to stay at your home resort. We've done this three times already in 3 years of ownership. We call day-by-day, but MS can generally look ahead, and tell you "how things look". Your existing reservation will be cancelled and replaced with the new ressie.

Don't be sorry, that's what we're here for :)
Just grabbed my handbook for ya.
If you cancel 31 days or more prior to check-in, all of your points needed to make that ressie will go back to your use year
30 days-1 day -all of your points needed to make that ressie get put into a holding account
1 day-all points forfeited.
HTH :)

Please bear with me, I'm another newbie (I apologize for thread hijacking...it is all in the same vein of inquiry though). My home is BCV. If I book 11 months out for a 1 bedroom and a 2 bedroom at my home resort and then was successfully able to book a grand villa 7 months out at OKW ( yes yes, I :cool1: know, I know)and cancelled my BCV reservation the point difference would be returned to me in time to bank (if needed)? Cool beans if the answer is yes!

It would depend on how many points as compared to how many you own (what percent of your points are we talking about?_ and how far into the Use year you are when you make the switch...up to 100% for the first 6 month, then 50 % before 9 months are up and 25 % if up to the 10 month mark...then no banking in the last two months of your use year....

By way of clarification--a holding account means that the points can ONLY be used to reserve things within the next 60 days until the points expire.

To make it simple, if you cancel a reservation more than 31 days in advance the points are returned to your account. You may use them for a reservation (subject to availability) or you may bank them if you are within the banking deadlines.

Best wishes -

The whole "extra points" thing is the tricky part. Particularly if you are switching to take advantage of lower points. Remember if you borrowed any points for the original reservation, you'll want to use those first when you switch, they cannot be banked no matter when in your use year it is. Some members choose to book one day less than ideal at their home resort, then add a night (and points) at seven months rather than risk losing points.
