If I make a reservation using points from this use year and then have to cancel what happens to the points? Does it depend how close we are to travel - if so, how close.

It also depends on how close you are to the end of your use year. If you cancel within 30 days of your reservation, the points go into a "holding account". That means that they can only be used in that use year and you have to book your reservation within 60 days of the new check in.

The other problem is where are you in your use year. If you are past the banking deadlines, then you would have to make sure you use the points before the use year is up.

To clarify, if you cancel a ressie MORE than 30 days out, the points can be banked as long as you are within the banking deadlines for your use year, as HBC pointed out.

Note that the answers above apply only to a DVC reservation, which is probably what you are asking.

If however you use points for a non-DVC reservation, such as in the Disney Collection, then no matter when you cancel the reservation, points are returned to your regular use year but with a new status of Reservation Points.

Special restrictions (different from the above answers) apply to using Reservation Points
