We are planning a trip in December of 15 but wont have enough points until October 1st. Is there a way I can reserve the hotel with a combo of cash and points? I dont want to chance waiting till Oct 1st to reserve my room. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty new to DVC , but I think as long as the points are there when the trip is taken then you can make the reservation any time during your 11/7 month window.

What exactly do you mean that you won't have enough points until Oct 1st?

Is October your use year?

Or are you planning on buying more points?

Right now, if you have points coming in an October use year, on Oct 1st 2015, you can book a room starting Dec 5,2015 up until Dec 12,2015. You can do this today. You should not wait until Oct 1st - the rooms will be gone! You can also borrow oct 2016 points into your 2015 oct use year and use them today to book Dec 2015.

You can sign in online to the DVC site and it will tell you this. If you have current year 2014 Oct points that you want to use for that reservation you would be able to bank them until May 31, 2015 and use them until Sept 30, 2016.

If you are planning a December 2015 trip you'd better plan on booking now. If you wait you won't have many options. Like others have said, when you get points reloaded every year has nothing to do with when you can book.

If you look at your account online, you should see:

October 2014
October 2015
October 2016
October 2017

For a December 2015 stay, you can use banked 2014, current 2015, borrowed 2016. You can do this at 11 months for your home resort. There's no waiting for points to deposit (assuming you have closed on your contract).

You never get more points per se. They are always in your account. Your 2040 points are in your account already. The important thing is when the booking window opens for you to be able to access them.

I think it confuses people to think of it as "getting my points" but if you insist:

With an October UY, your 2015 UY will start October 1, 2015. You "Got your 2015 points" on November 1, 2013. One year and 11 months prior to the start of the UY.

As I said, they were already there, it is just on November 1, 2013, you were able to make a reservation for October 1, 2014. Since that reservation would be in your 2014 UY, you were also able to borrow 2015 points to make it.

If you are saying you have no 2014 points left...thats prety much how it should be. December would be vacationing in your 2015 UY...its best to do it with 2015 points.

For december, you can make that reservation today.

I have 66 points left for 2015. My use year is October. My home resort is VGF but I want to book a non home based resort for the 1st full week of December at Boardwalk or Beachclub. I forgot that I can borrow from 2016 so I guess its problem solved. I just booked vgf for the dates I needed and it was all good. I will be logging on at the 7 month window and switch it to the boardwalk as long as its available and cancel the vgf reservation.

Thanks for everyones help

I could be wrong here, but you may lose points on this deal. There are many others better at keeping point rules & use years straight in their heads, so feel free to correct me. VGF is normally going to use far more points than the same reservation at another resort. If you've borrowed from 2016 to book VGF, you may not need that many points on your new res. If so, you can't return those extra borrowed points to 2016 & it will be too late to bank any for 2015.

It's true that the borrowed points will stay in the 2015 UY but if less points are used they would free up the 2015 points which the OP will have until May 31st 2016 to bank into their 2016 UY if they don't have any other use for them prior to that.

When I first bought, the easiest way for me to remember that any trip can be "paid" for with banked points from the UY prior to travel, points from the UY of travel, and borrowed points from the UY after travel.

Doesn't matter when you call and book, just when you will go. Since a Dec 2015 trip happens in an Oct 2015 UY, then banked 2014 points, 2015 points, and borrowed 2016 points are all available to use when booking the trip (as you figured out!)

Just be careful, though, with that Dec reservation and taking chances at 7 months. That is an extremely busy time and once you cancel and go to re-book, if the new room is gone in those few minutes, you may not be able to get the original one back.

In this case, I might call MS at 7 months and have them do it if there is availability. I know that some say they can't hold things when making the switch, but I have had CM's tell me they could and when they couldn't the CM was very clear about it. I always asked up front if there was a risk as well.

Just something to think about!

Good luck!
