Reservation for 5 but only 4 show up - any charge?

we are planning a trip with my family and my in law....we are driving and arriving a few days early then my in law will be meeting us.

the first day we want to make a dining reservation but just in case she is running late, is there a change or or penalty if we have a reservation for 5 but only 4 show up?

From what I understand the official policy leaves the charge up to the discretion of the manager on duty. That said, we have never been charged when one member of our party cancelled at the last minute and the rest of us showed.

Nope you are only charged if it is a complete no show and nobody shows up or if you cancel after the cancellation window. There were a few adrs last year where we were able to get tables for 4 people (we were party of 3) and nothing would come up when I tried for 3 ppl. It is much better to show up with less people than your adr is for than the other way around.
