Resale, then adding on thru Disney?

I've seen hints at the answer to my question, but nothing concrete so figured I'd pick your brains again! :goodvibes

We are thinking that 200 points total would be good for us, and I've recently been considering having 2 home resorts - either BLT/AKV for a 1BR every other year and then a small contract at the BCV for a weekend every other year at the F&W. Not many of these are available, so I was thinking, is it possible to get (for example) 160 pts resale for AKV, have that all go through, and then through Disney buy, say, a 40 point contract for BCV? I know it'd be more overall, but unless I find the same UY for similar # of points (which seems pretty hard given the low point addition), then going through disney might be best.

Can anyone confirm this? How about getting the same UY thru Disney? Will they just try to sell me any UY?

Once you are a member, you can add-on points at any resort (subject to availability). True add-ons direct from DVC will have the same UY as your master contract. Also, add-ons direct from DVC currently don't have closing costs.

To get a different UY from DVC you would have to purchase a new master contract at the current new member minimum.

No they will not try to sell you any UY; if you're already a member they will sell you same UY as you've got unless you request otherwise & then if you did you would be subject to minimum as if you were a first time buyer.

If your first purchase is via resale you can buy add-on ( even with different Home Resort than first ) through Disney with same UY as that contract; you may occasionally find an add-on purchase means being waitlisted for short time if Disney doesn't have on hand enough points for a particular resort & UY ( wait can vary from couple of days to weeks ). When purchasing additional points through Disney minimum purchase with cash is 25 pts ( 50 pts if you'd like their financing ) and you may purchase any number up from these add-on minimums (ie 27 or 41 etc. with $ or 52 or 58 etc with financing )

Hope this helped :goodvibes

Yes - many members buy a smaller contract via resale to get in the DVC system, and then add on at another resort through Disney. It works well because, once you are a DVC member, Disney allows you to add-on only a minimum of 25 points (50 if financing). The smaller contracts usually go for a premium on the resale markets, but are still usually cheaper than going through Disney. Also, since BCV is a sold out resort, it may take you a couple of months to get the points through Disney, so you might have to be patient in that regard. Good luck! :goodvibes

Thanks!! :thumbsup2

Great, I just wanted to be certain that was an option if we couldn't find resale in the same UY. Every day I seem to waver on what home resort I'd like, so this seemed like the best option. Esp since we will have kids at some point in the near future and at that time, walking to EPCOT for F&W/nice dinners may not be our #1 priority!! :lmao:

We bought a 75 point resale at BWV specifically for the F & W every year...it was a sweet deal. And then a few months later got an 85 point contract through Disney at Wilderness Lodge (for Christmas month). Both of best worlds!!

That is what we did. Bought 200 BCV points in October 2008 resale. Then in April 2009 and again in June 2009, we bought 130 points (so 260 total) BLT points direct from Disney and told them to use the Same UY (Mar) as our BCV contract. Worked just fine.

My only caution to you on having multiple resorts is to make sure you have enough points at 1 resort to cover your "worst case" scenario. We are doing a big family vacation, 10 nights, one 2BR and two studios, standard view, BWV. We will be using about 720 points. I was able to book this at 11 months out.

Actually speaking of "worst case scenario" - How difficult is it, really, to book a THV? That's one of the ONLY reasons I've been considering SSR. We like to travel in Oct & early Dec. but in the future (and poss. for the trip we need a THV) it might be more during fall/spring breaks (ugh) due to family needs.

If it's THAT hard, we might end up going SSR over BLT and still doing a small BCV add on.

We added on recently SSR just for the THV since we were told there are only 60 units available and I would imagine they are or will get popular since we tried years ago to book them when they were "for rent through Disney" and always had a hard time getting them due to availability. I have no idea how difficult it is through THV but 60 units is not a lot.

To date, only 30 of the 60 THVs have been declared for the DVC membership. Thus, DVC members have access to only half of the THVs; the rest belong to Disney and are available for cash reservations. Although the other 30 THVs will eventually be declared for the DVC, it will be quite awhile before that happens. The first 30 THVs were declared on January 22, 2009, and only 36.6% of the points in those Units have been sold. At that rate, it might not be until late 2012 before Disney will need to declare the other THVs.

Interesting to know, we are staying at BLT in Feb we booked at 11 month window using 2 years worth of points fro a 2 bedroom and want to do the same on opposite years for THV. I hope we can get them at the 11 month without having to move due to them not being available for the full week. Right now we want to stay at all the resorts to get a feel for each one since we are new to dvc!

we bought in with a 30 point BWV resale, then added on about a week later at BLT for 125...

When we first looked we only wanted about 100 to start and Disney was selling 160...

So we paid cash for the 30 BWV, then added on BLT (got the Cruise)

one thing that I found in out is that in our case (we didnt qualify for preferred financing) but when we were considered a member, because of the 30 points, we automatically got the preferred rate!
