My wife and I almost bought direct today at the grand Floridian. A few questions. If we buy resale do we still receive the emails about last minute Disney cruise specials? Also do we still get the cash discount if we combine points and cash for ur stay. Also does somebody have an opinion on us buying Saratoga or old key west if we plan to stay primarily a old bay towers or grand Floridian. Do we have an chance of getting them at the seven month window.

No resales yet for grand Floridian but there are for bay towers

Lastly we vacation mostly around spring break and summer maybe Thanksgiving or Xmas every few years. What is our best use year.

Sorry for so many questions. This is a big investment for us.

In a dozen years I've seen I think a single email about a last minute cruise special. I wouldn't count on that resale or not.

Don't buy a resort you'll be disappointed to end up at. VGF is small - there won't be a lot of 7 month availability. BLT seems to be fairly open for Lake Views (but NOT standard views) at 7 months for some of the year. BCV and BWV can be hard to book 7 months out a lot of the year as well. So can Aulani - and GCV (the Disneyland Resort) is ALWAYS hard to book if you aren't an owner.

If its a big investment - DON'T DO IT. There is risk involved in this - you can get more flexibility and less risk for not much more money renting points.

There have been VGF resales but they aren't enough lower to compensate for the lost points. IF you plan to stay at VGF regularly you should likely buy there. If you want into the system and work to get VGF here and there but will be happy with other options, buying for SSR may be worth it. You still may not get BLT routinely during the times you mentioned so that might be an in between option for you. You will get all the emails that the rest of us get but you will not be eligible for member cruises as a resale buyer, you might be eligible for any club related discounts though there hasn't been any other than a couple of specific examples.

My suggestion is to spend a few months and get info then make the best decision for your situation, whatever that is for you.

Welcome.

Crisi and Dean have given you good advice. I will only add that if you are going at those times and want to stay at VGF and/or BLT you really should own there. And you pretty much need to book your dates at 11 months. Every time. Ownership does not guarantee that you will get a room at your home resort unless you take advantage of the booking window and maybe not even then at really popular times. Meaning if you wait even a day or two you may miss out.

Good luck with your decision.

There are seldom any DVC discounts for cruise "specials". If you receive those now, you will likely still receive them - but not likely from DVC. You will receive mailings with information about DVC Member cruises, but those are not typically discounted.

There is a DVC Member cash discount of 25% for stays at DVC resorts - based on availability. It is not always available for cash stays.

If you will primarily stay at BLT or VGF it would be best to purchase at those resorts. While reservations might be available at 7 months using points from other resorts, it is not a certain thing - especially at those resorts, depending on the dates for your stay.

Good luck with your decision. :)

I also recall only one or two discounted cruise specials offered to DVC members and I think it may have been during the time they were getting the new ships and bookings were not filling up yet. It's way too rare to give it consideration for buying but it was offered to all owners.

For spring break and summer stays you may be able to get BLT lakeview without too much of a problem but from Thanksgiving through Christmas both VGF and BLT are almost completly booked up by the 7 month window. If you want a monorail resort and plan to stay during the most popular quarter of DVC stay you need to own where you want to stay. We own at both and even at this point much of December would available to waitlist for both resorts and the 7 month window is not open yet.

Exactly. I own at BLT and found the same when I checked.

Are you absolutely sure you really want to go to the VGF every year?
If you are flexible with your travel date and are not sold to stay always at the same resort, buying SSR is the best deal.
If you travel during DVC peak time and you have a favorite resort, it's better to buy there.

These are very good questions and they've been covered pretty well so far. Don't feel bad about asking questions, that's what we are here for. I would suggest that there are many, many more questions that you haven't even thought of yet. You may very well find that DVC is right for you, but the fact that you "almost" bought suggests to me that you still have doubts. I would take the time to put all your doubts to rest before making a decision. DVC will be waiting for you.

Good luck! :)

Also remember if you buy a resale the points cannot be used for any Disney Hotels, the cruise line or adventures by disney.

IMO, that's a good thing. It forces people to buy points for what they are a value for and not to use for items that are more costly long term using points.

A terrible use of points.

Agreed.

Buy where you want to stay. Bay Lake Towers is very nice and significantly less than VGF in terms of price and points per night.

I agree, however all the resorts are nice. If you really HAVE to stay at those two resorts I would suggest that you look for BLT resale and once complete add on direct at GFV. Split your expected point purchase in two and purchase both in the same use year.
